Physicist Jon Butterworth goes on a journey behind the scenes at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, recounting the hunt for the Higgs boson, discussing his own work, and speculating on the questions that the restart of the LHC might help us answer, during his April 1, 2015 public lecture at Perimeter Institute.
Perimeter Institute (charitable registration number 88981 4323 RR0001) is the world’s largest independent research hub devoted to theoretical physics, created to foster breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of our universe, from the smallest particles to the entire cosmos. I attended this lecture (what a treat). So I bought the author's book "the most wanted particle" and found it very thought provoking.

When Dr. Butterworth was talking about the virtual photon having mass "but, that's ok because its a 'virtual' photon" - I didn't see a single person in the audience crack a smile. You can be serious about physics and laugh at the same time. I really enjoyed his presentation and I had a few laughs about something that I consider to be a serious subject.

I think "virtual" particles could be a candidate for dark matter if it turns out they actually interact gravitationally with their surroundings. The excitations in the vacuum due to photons and other particles create "tons" of virtual particles. Maybe the reason dark-matter hangs out around normal matter is because the photons and other massive particles constantly create it, then it very quickly decays back into nothing (short lifetime). Spiral galaxies radiate a lot more light in the directions perpendicular to the galactic plane and that appears to be where dark matter needs to be to explain the rotational speed of the outer spiral arms. Coincidence?

maybe you have your own definition of a "virtual" particle

Is it possible (and testable) that dark matter is "residue" from early symmetry breaking? Maybe not all "froze out" in early symmetry breaking, and DM is what hasn't (yet?) frozen...
