+Nilsa Eberhart Well Joiks are normally wordless, usually containing various sound (almost like chants), however, sometimes they can contain very few words, but the language(s) that Joiks (Joik is just one name it ref are traditionally sang in is Sámi languages which consists of about 10 different dialects. the most common being Northern Sámi. The term Joik is referring to Southern Sámi language which has around 500 speakers, and luohti is the same thing but in Northern Sámi which has around 10,000 speakers.) are Sámi languages and they are what you would call "nature based" languages, meaning that they have an abnormally extensive amount of words that describe instances or things in nature. In Northern Sámi there are 300 different words that describe snow and ice, and 60 words to describe mountains. So that is why is sounds like "The voice of the rivers, the forests, the jungle, the mountains...the roots from Mother Earth..." Well it was played in swedish radio stations but the Swedish state still continued to exploit the Sámi land, continued to ignore basic rights for the Sámi people and the suicid percentage among reindeer herders is still very high so it didn't help with the conflict within Sweden. But it's still very important that indigenous people such as the Sámi get media attention and more platforms.
