Don Nicholson (Great Nephew of Dyno Don Nicholson) interviews legendary engine builder Jon Kaase about his time working alongside Dyno Don Nicholson from 1977 to 1979.
Dyno Don Nicholson had a racing career that lasted decades, driving Stock, Funny Cars, and one of the founders of the Pro Stock class. Dyno Don won the NHRA Pro Stock Championship in 1977 with Jon Kaase as his crew chief.
Kaase worked with Dyno on both Ford Mustang II and Dyno's Ford Fairmont.

Make no mistake. Jon you are a great personable man. I didn't know any better but He took some time for Me. He was very nice to Me, a nobody. He took time to show Me what I was interested in and answer my Questions. For Me it was a bucket list moment. Thank you Mr. Kaase. I will never forget how great you treated Me.

I was Dyno Don superfan back in the 70's and had the opportunity to meet him at a match race at Dragway 42 (with a somewhat longer haired Jon Kaase adjusting the valves on the cleveland stroker). Dyno talked to me like we had known each other for years. He was just exactly what I expected him to be. His passing was a gut punch.

Dyno Don Nicholson was a great guy. He and Earl Wade helped me a lot back in the early 70's many times. Because of them , I won many races.

Jon Kaase produces very high quality products. I have a Kaase 520 BBF in a '66 Ford Fairlane GT.

Saw Dyno and Kaase at dragway 42, Ohio, match racing, Dyno set low et, no nitrous 7.32. During elims. he blew head gasket, wet his tires, careened into Sox and Martin, went off left side of track, took out armco, scared the shit out of peeps at 3/4 track, Sox did an endo went through lights w/ a 9.10 et. backwards, shut event down, tore up underground wiring to lights. Running 516 cubes. Year prior he was running cleve, 400+ cubes, was at burnout box w/Dyno when he lit em' up it literally made your ribs hurt from the sonic vibrations, holy shit, what a show.

I watch that race in the summer of 78 at Englishtown mountain motor it was a crazy night very hot dyno had a 516 all aluminum 460 engine he raced Jenkins with he ran a7.99 the first 7 second pro stock run ford v Chevy it did not get any better than this I will never forget it the place went wild .

Yes it was Englishtown nj crazy Eddies mountain motor and it was sweltering hot that night

That’s great to hear about local tracks from such a legend. Budds Creek and Summerduck were great tracks in the early stages of racing and still active tracks today. Great and interesting stories from Mr. Kaase

Why was he called "Dyno Don" if he never used a dyno? lol I miss those days. I'm 75 now and remember the media rivalry between Don and Glidden and also some of the top fuel racers, and the absolute BEAUTY of John Masmanian's cars. Now I have a 1971 V-8 Vega as a daily driver. Ricky Racer doesn't even look at me. He just grips his steering wheel and stares straight ahead. Must be the cam. lol

He was the first to use a chassis dyno to tune a car for drag racing in the early 1960's.

Anything about one of the most significant things during Jon's time with the Dyno Man ? ,,, The clutchless 5 speed, I think Doug Nash transmission .

Thanks for this. Sure would be nice to hear the straight scoop about the kendig carburetors, a lot of stories about whether they were actually used in competition or swapped for dominators when actually making passes.

My understanding is that Dyno never ran the Kendigs in competition.

@@dynodonnicholson2771 I asked that question a while back in one of the Nostalgia Pro Stock forums. Roland Tomaccio, who worked for Jenkins for a while, said that in the time period of the Kendig sponsorship, Dyno was using a set of Dominators that Jenkins set up for him. He supposedly used those carburetors for quite a few years after. The Kendigs were never used in competition.

The story that I heard about the Kendig carburetors was that they worked well but Holley started offering a big contingency prize if you won using their carburetors and fuel system parts. Kendig was a small outfit that couldn't afford to pay out something like that.
