Jon's voice is still amazing even after all these decades. Savatage has always been one of my favorite bands ever and I will never understand why they did not become huge.
@MetalMaster1014 жыл бұрын
Too many bands at the time, they couldn't all make it big. A lot of it comes down to luck and timing as well. Savatage is a niche band, you either don't know them, or you a hardcore fan. Still their legacy lives on, great unique style. With youtube people can still discover their music.

He left to work on other projects, like writing musicals and stuff. And the guitarist is Matt LePorte who pasted away in 2011.
@dmitryowens54399 жыл бұрын
And where on Earth did he find a guitarist as overweight as he is? That must have been a tough feat!
@scazxr9 жыл бұрын
He decided to make buckets of money writing for Trans Siberian Orchestra instead of touring backwaters for crowds of 200 people I guess. Can't say I blame him. This album certainly kicked 4$$

MarokonKauhu hi Needs to have a break - and Zak Stevens has joined the band. In this time, Jon could come down from Alcohol and other drugs. During the Handfull of Pain Sessions he was still in the Studios, and make a very good Job together with O,Neill. A
@corytucker66687 жыл бұрын
All those reasons above but I'd probably think he'd want a little break after his brother criss being killed in 86 by that drunk driver. A venture like making a band with your brother is probably not going to ring the same to you after his death. "when metal doesn't ring the same, reaction from inside your brain" Savatage. Jon though has come back to appear on savatage songs as either vocals or back up vocals. If you look at the album credits on some youll still find he had a helping hand. Always loved his style of singing.

Poor Jon Oliva became the "Mountain King". It's sad. I think the death of his brother in a car crash drove him to excessive consumption. On a positive note his voice is still very good.
@robertciaschini76255 жыл бұрын
He died here in Florida in 1993. I saw him play three times and the last right before his death. I believe his wife survived the crash on Hwy 301, which is vart dangerous. What a monster player who never reached his full potential.
@robintst11 жыл бұрын
Jon really got heavy over the years and that's not a knock on him in the least, just an observation. I'm actually impressed that he sounds better now Live than he did back in '83 when he originally recorded Sirens. Can't quite hit the high-pitched screams anymore but that doesn't matter. I wish Savatage would re-form officially for just one more album, even if it's a send off for the band; a final chapter that maybe makes a continuation and conclusion out of the Hall of the Mountain King.

@robintst11 жыл бұрын
I do know that Jon put a lot of his own money into keeping the band afloat in the final years so that had to have been another factor in play. At some point, the expenses can be too much to be practical. JOP is at least more of a successor to Savatage than TSO is, although, Beethoven's Last Night easily sounds like a Savatage record for the most part and did have Jon and Zak sing some of the songs.
@TotalSinging12 жыл бұрын
@crispyvenom - actually Jon lost a lot of weight prior to their 1990 tour and he was down to about 205 lbs. Not skinny but definitely way down from his 300lb plus usual weight.

SAVAFAT!!!
@TotalSinging12 жыл бұрын
yeah he's well over 400lbs - dangerous. I saw him pass out after a show in 1987 and he was only at the Hall of the Mountain King weight.
@MetalMaster10111 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, and a final Savatage album would be great. But part of the reason they never got back together is b/c Chris Oliva died. It wouldn't be right without him, kinda like why Pantera would never wanna be Pantera again after Dimebag died. They just record and tour as other bands, but play the classic songs as tribute.

Savatage made 4 more albums after he died.
@TampaBayToday12 жыл бұрын
I fear that "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal" is a dying Art form. Jon Oliva may very well be one of the most talented musicians & songwriters on the planet. One of the rare singers that can scream in key, for example: Jim Morrison, Roger Daltrey, & David Coverdale, to name a few-unlike the "screaming for the sake of screaming" that we are constantly tormented with. If you like early Savatage, then you should most definatly listen to the Doctor Butcher CD.
