I’m 42, so right between both Jon and this lady’s age range, and yeah, you will never feel empowered, ever, but that’s an illusion. You do have the power to take action, and make a change. It will most likely be very, very small, but that’s the power you realistically have. But don’t throw it away, because if there is enough of you, that power is magnified, and you can make the really big changes.

But he was the hand that was dealt (Already, it. should be clear, the other guy was *_NEVER_* on the cards). But, even with the problems, I never could have imagined that this administration could have been as successful as it has. And that's because of the immense political pressure brought to bear by progressives, young people, and probably most importantly Black women. You can't give up because you don't have the optimal choice in candidate. Take care of 2024, kick the orange putrescence to the curb forever. Look guys, beside the obvious discontent between our parties and candidates, we all have to agree that our voices do matter always. It is the people who decide who gets to sit in a political seat of power, it is the people who act as jury in a court trial, but it is the people who ultimately decide how this year's election will go out. Jon stewart has a point. We are letting our anxiety and fear get the best of us. We must look in ourselves and find the confidence to overcome such feelings and take action. Especially when it comes to getting the word out to encourage people to vote. Our voices are powerful, and it is because of that power that a certain party or parties have gone to great lengths to silence us. We can never be silent when we have the opportunity to rise up and overcome those who want us to fail. Never forget, our voice is our power and we must take action to ensure that our voices are forever heard.

Trying to take your vote away? How, exactly? By removing candidates off the ballot in blue states? By burying the only opposition in legal battles and court appearances? By charging the opposing candidate with a crime, then admitting a week later that your supporting candidate did the exact same crime, but "it's different"? Oh wait... no, those are all things the current administration is doing... You seriously think requiring an ID to vote is "taking it away"? So we should require background checks for weapon purchases (a right, btw), but not to vote for the president? That's not hypocritical or ironic.

There were multiple voting districts in the 2020 election that were decided by fewer than 100 votes difference. And some of those made the difference for their state. Your vote matters. Even if you are in a state that you KNOW will send their electoral votes the other way, your vote still counts because you are making your voice heard. Even if your team doesn't win, it's on record that they were voted for.
@GendoRokabundi

And yet when people vote for an independent they get told the exact opposite. That because their team didn't win and everyone knew it would go the other way, that it was a waste and the same as voting for the other side. It does get extremely frustrating though, when the people that should know best just how important voting is, the politicians and their campaigns, seem to ignore those same voters most of the time, and then condescend to them during the lead up to the election, not by actually trying to reach out, but by guilting them and blaming them for any electoral loses.

It's a majority voting system: everyone who doesn't vote is giving a 1-vote advantage to the other side. Edit: it's a majority-vote de facto two-party system _at the moment:_ if you want to change that system for better representation then you can start now, there's groups to join or start your own, but you won't have time to change the system by the next set of elections, and losing any set of elections can set electoral system reform back by years or even decades.

@@curtisrutter4009 That's just wrong in multiple ways. To start, you seem to be operating under the premise that people's votes belong to one or the other of the 2 major political parties, and that not voting for that party is taking something away from it. That's not how voting works. Your vote does not belong to anyone. You can vote for who you want, or no one. The major parties don't get it by default. Also, one candidate does not gain a vote by someone not voting. If I don't vote for Biden, Trump's vote total does not increase if I also do not vote for him. By that reasoning, if I actually vote for Trump, he'd gain TWO votes: one for me not voting for Biden, then a second for me voting for Trump. That's clearly ridiculous. I understand that the 2 major parties have controlled the presidency for a long time and will likely continue to do so. That doesn't mean they own my, or anyone else's, vote. If I don't vote for Trump or Biden, neither of them gets my vote.

Fair enough but consider for a moment just how meaningless peoples' "votes" are in non-swing states. Young people are disillusioned at this point by the voting system in general. It should honestly be a law or something that anyone voting in a general election has to vote in the primaries too because the lack of voter turnout in the primaries is just not doable anymore. Not attacking you either here, but you do have the benefit of having been literally 13 in 1968. Not only was the American Dream still "alive" but there were more than a few "motivating factors" there as well. Just before the 21st century began is when real apathy over this stuff began. Roflmao...I'm nearly 70....and I agree whole-heartedly with everything Jon is saying here. He's right: taking action, even just as simple a thing as voting, is enormously empowering. It gives humans meaning beyond mere existence. If this is any consolation to younger people, seeing you make your way through the world gives ME hope. You DO matter, more than you know. The legacy of humanity lies in its offspring: the only true immortality humans can obtain.

Worse than that, the outlook for the future pretty much ensures me that it isn't going to get better. In 1978 The Supreme Court legalized bribery in our own Government and it's been downhill since then. My advice to the current youth is move to Canada or Europe somewhere the first chance you get and never look back. I know I will have some Canadians and Europeans reading this and complaining about how bad it is there, but they truly have no idea the B.S. going on in The U.S. specifically for poor folks.

For those who feel alienated by the system, I strongly recommend the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paolo Freire, one of the greatest and most read educator of all time. According to him, their is no greater power than the one of the oppressed (basically anyone who feel powerless) when they work together to free themselves for the system of oppression. The main obstacle are not actually the oppressor themselves. The main obstacles are those who protect the oppressors but also those who let themselves slip into despair. Freedom is achieved by finding a balance between critical thinking and action. I think our brothers and sisters from the Daily show really embody the spirit of Freire teachings! So listen to old man John ;P

Having lived through the 60-70's, I think the world is a much bleaker place now than it was then. However, back then, pre-social media, we were able to amass thousands of people to protest and demonstrate against the government and other entities we thought were harmful. Young people today could amass these numbers daily with a Tweet or IG post. Forget what Kylie Jenner and Taylor Swift are doing and fight for your future like we did at your age. Demand billionaires pay back into society. Demand our government take your concerns seriously. Because if you don't fight for yourselves, don't expect anyone else to do it for you.

I am 42 ... About the candidates this year, I agree that they lack a certain luster (and I include Jill Stein in that judgment). I chose Bernie over Biden in the 2020 primary. Biden has earned a better rating from me more recently by doing things like walking an auto workers picket line, aggressive antitrust action, appointing a truly diverse Cabinet (even if the Senate is too afraid to confirm them all) and calling China a dictatorship even if the CEOs who are heavily invested there don't want to hear it. Would Gavin Newsom have done any of these things? I doubt it very much.

One of the candidates has a track record of supporting reproductive rights, equity for people of all races, LGBTQ+ rights; is working to address the high cost of post-secondary education; has teams of people working on solutions to address climate change; speaks respectfully to/about people with disabilities; expresses love for his family and encourages people to be civil to each other. That same candidate works with our country's allies and has rebuilt those relationships after the damage done by the previous administration, regaining their trust while working to minimize threats from countries who wish us harm. His administration recently addressed excessive fees from banks, airlines, etc. As VP, he was part of the team that did the grueling work of passing the Affordable Care Act and, as POTUS, his administration capped the cost of insulin and inhalers and is working to cap the cost of other medications. He actively supports union efforts to secure better wages for workers and supports living wages for all workers. He approves tax credits for low-income people and making sure all kids are being fed. If young people can't find something here that aligns with their concerns, I question what exactly they're looking for.

Do want to see large corporations have more control over you than they already do. Fine, sit the election out and throw your vote away. You don't matter? You won't if you don't vote.
