Bear with me on this one. There was a high rise fire near Ray’s firehouse. When FDNY showed up the doorman told the members the fire is to the left as you get upstairs. that was correct if you took the elevator, but, as our procedures call for, we get off the elevator two floors below the fire and walk the additional two floors. This of course, would put us at a different perspective. The fire would be at our right. The initial members were crawling in the wrong direction. with the apartment door left open they were crawling towards the fire with the hallway being fed with blowtorch proportions from the winds at the high level of the building as the windows had already given way. Ray, who was the nozzleman ( lead man at the hose, responsible for directing the the hose stream) took a peak at the conditions in the hallway from the stairwell saw two reflective stripes of his brothers bunker pants go by him, he knew they were headed towards the blowtorch, he grab both of them by the ankles and pulled them into the stairwell, saving their lives. I’m not sure if those two men made it out of 9/11 alive but Ray had given them more days to live. To me, anyway, that is the definition of a wonderful human. It is one of the great honors of my life to have known Ray, as a brother firefighter and as someone who can say we had a mutual respect for one another. I hope everyone that reads this can know that feeling with 4:09 someone they love and respect. R.I.P. Ray. Your example has made me a better person.

If we could as Americans, unite for the right reasons, we would be an even greater nation. I don't care about your spiritual belief, your sexual preference, or how you identify. This is America, and we should all be treated with respect. No group of people is any better than anyone else. Straight White Men deserve the same respect that I, a Native American Man deserve. "We didn't talk politics much" that means a lot. Everyone there knew that Ray and Jon would disagree on almost everything. Like me and one of my best friends. We did like to talk politics but did not make that the be all and end all of who we were. He could joke that I was a pinko commie, and I could joke that he was a fascist pig, but we would give each other the shirts off our backs if needed. In 2003 his adopted son (who was troubled when John adopted him) got steaming mad at John, but took it out by stealing his dad's gun and shooting up my house in a very stoned rage. I stood with John and David to get him into treatment rather than the prison term he had in mind, and visited him regularly and he straightened out. Years later, I was in deep clinical depression after a divorce and relocation. Who showed up to pull me out of it? John. I did not want to see him at the time, it was pride and embarrassment that I had let my life devolve, but he would not be stopped. My family tried to help, but the closest one was nearly 1,000 miles away, without John showing up in person, putting up with my bad mood and temperament and reminding me in person, who I was, I don't know what would have happened. Mt "fascist" friend saved his "pinko" friend.
