"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

@@daniellove162 You just tried to draw an equivalency that doesn't exist. Trump invented square footage that didn't exist to garner loans amounts he would not have gotten otherwise. And Stuart sold property for more than he purchased it for. And while an absurd sum, nothing he did was illegal. I do believe similar property was going for 24,000,000 at the time in the area as well. Real estate goes up, real estate goes down. But you can't invent real estate that doesn't exist and seek a loan on that non-existent real estate. That’s fraud. He entered into a contract under a false premise. I think the banks should be investigated too, that gave him the loans for a decade plus. The bank absolutely had their own assessors out there to check square footage at bare minimum, and there's no way that they confused 11,000 square feet with 30,000 square feet.

Unless you are talking about assessed tax Value. Which is set by rules and laws made at state and local level. OR you are going by Collateral Assessed Values (what trump is on for) Which is ALSO set by rules usually designated by the Lender as well as co opting Both Market Value and Local Tax Valuations. (which Trump Lied about Sq Footage. And about the State Evaluation. And about the Current Market Valuation. When submitting these properties as possible collateral for the loans. This gave him lower interest rates. Its the Actual core of the issue As when he did so it was illegal.) Market Value however DOES indeed have a set way to determine. its what similar homes or properties are going for at that given time. Certain elements can be taken into consideration. Like Who lived their and such. But Those are limited and usually have small impacts UNLESS you have a Buyer willing to pay it and can prove that right then and their. Other wise your Market Value for Tax and Loan purpose is based on what similar property in similar location goes for and are able to sell at in a reasonable amount of time. You can ASK for anything you want. But until some one Forks over that Cash it is not the market value. And its only the Market Value for like one transaction.

I work with 'assessment valuations', albeit in a different country. They're meant to be market related but they're typically created once every 4 to 5 years. More importantly, if your property happens to be undervalued, 99% of people will simply pay taxes on the below market assessment value without notifying the government. Obviously. What you end up selling the property for is also entirely unrelated because 'market related' is usually determined based on the sale of similar properties around a specific date BUT it's merely an indication and not at all a prescription. You can list your property for literally any price and if a willing buyer comes along then that's perfectly fine.

He states that overvaluing property, AND PAYING TAXES ON THE LOWER VALUE, WHICH IS WHAT STEWART DID, is fraud and far from a victimless crime. The guy who bought Stewart's property took a 26% loss on it. And Stewart did the city out of hundreds of thousands of Dollars in taxes. The bank Trump did business with made money and were happy to do business with him again. Trump is worth about $6 billion. Assessed price doesn’t set market value! 04’ Stewart buys the place for $7.5 million. We all know how stable and reasonable NYC real estate is 😑. 2014 he sells for 17.5 million. Place goes back up for sale in 2017 at 20 million. Wits for 3 years, that seller unfortunately lost their ass and had to sell for 13 million and some change. The mental gymnastics of these bozos trying to draw the parallel is WILD.

Just as when the bank appraised Tump's property value. The bank themselves assessed the value of all his property to make sure they could recover the costs if he defaulted on his loan. As you have shown, the appraisal can be less than what they actually sell the property for. What Trump did wasn't even fraudulent because the bank assesses the value themselves before they decide to give him the loan. Trump defaulted on the loan which isn't a crime & to date he's paid back 98.2% of the loan. He's going to finish paying back the remaining 1.8% which was under the agreement between him & the bank & which he was capable of paying back the whole time. They charged him for a crime which harmed no one since the bank was being paid back what they were owed. On top of that, they charged him for a crime where the bank themselves did an independent appraisal. The bank didn't just take Trump's word for it. I no way was it fraudulent & in no way was it a crime. It's just normal business dealings where no harm was caused except to Trump himself who defaulted on the loan.

That's an interesting take. Let's look at some facts. The state says Trump committed fraud. But they don't charge him with a crime. They sue in civil court on behalf of banks who, in all this time, never thought themselves to file charges or take Trump to court. Those banks, by the way, testified in the trial *in Trump's defense* so I have a hard time seeing them as the injured party. At this point the judge decides before the trial even begins that Trump is automatically guilty and now we're just arguing over the payment. Now let's look at some numbers. Mar-a-Lago generates $25m in revenue each year. The judge decides this property is valued at $17m or whatever based on the tax assessed value of the property. In total, the judge decides Trump is liable for basically half a billion dollars. In the wake of this, media pundits started speculating on how Trump could raise the cash. In one instance, they suggested that by selling Mar-a-Lago he could get halfway there. So in short, the judge is saying that the property can generate $25m a year, and can be sold on the market for ten times that amount, but Trump is only allowed to borrow $17m against its value. But the judge is reasonable and intelligent, and I am not. And of course there's the subject of the video, Jon Stewart. It is suggested that the backlash to his "roast" is "dumb". Stewart asserts that "money is not infinite" which while true in the abstract is monumentally reductive. Expanding on this, he asserts that because Trump got a loan, someone else did not. Let's leave aside for the moment that the state can not produce one person who was denied a loan on this basis and is not even trying to sue on behalf of any such party. The US dollar has been a fiat currency for half a century. It is not backed by hard currency in any form since being taken off the gold standard. Thus, to keep the analogy simple, the bank does not simply have a finite stack of gold bars in their vault, which they distribute to their borrowers, and then once the gold bars are all gone, then no more loans. Individuals and businesses borrow and repay countless dollars every day, generating value in the market and interest in the repayments. Literally 2/3 of the American economy exists only on paper, the fundamental idea that a fund is worth this and a loan is worth that. It entirely belies the notion that Trump is "stealing" loans from other people. But Jon Stewart is reasonable and intelligent, and I am not.

Here’s what I’m trying to figure out: In what sense did Trump “undervalue” his properties when it came to taxes? Weren’t Trumps property taxes, just like Stewart’s, determined by public assessment?
@Boblib1970

Kyle doesn't get it either. At 11:38 he says that "Trump undervalued his properties for taxes." He can undervalue all he wants, he pays taxes on what the government assesses it at, not on what he values it at. This is like bizzaro world. He's ripping Pool for not understanding how property taxes work....while not understanding how property taxes work. Very weird (or intentionally misleading)

This is a complete joke to anyone who's ever tried to buy commercial real estate in NYC. They always list more square footage than there actually is. Usually an extra 30-40%. Louis Rossman went over this year's ago. When he asked the realtor why the square footage listed was well over the actual amount, she said, "It's just how real estate works in NYC."

It doesn't seem like it. Everything I've read shows Jon Stewart selling his estate at a higher dollar amount than what it was valued at. If someone handed me 5 million for my house that's currently valued at 250k, I would take it lol. Unless there's evidence that he lied to raise the value of it arbitrarily, let's say, I dunno, invented nonexistent square footage, there's a better case to be had, but there's zero reporting of that actually happening. Hell, this isn't even getting to the point of Trump LYING to the IRS to pay less property taxes on his properties, which we 100% have zero evidence of Jon Stewart doing.

Everyone who’s ever rented property in NYC knows the sq/ft that the owner says you’re getting is way more than what you actually get. There’s videos of people exposing the practice of realtors who show the property. It wouldn’t matter if the realtor said this place is $10k a month. That’s not what they do. They’ll say it’s $20 a sq/ft and it’s 500 sq/ft so it’s $10k but it’s obviously only 175 sq/ft. You show them it’s not 500 sq/ft and they don’t budge. It is common practice and it’s been going on for decades.
