Man and Metronome
Simply maintaining a plain meter is one of the most difficult things. The human hand can hardly meet the regularity that can be imagined. Instead, the deviations of its beat bear witness to the biological clockwork in our cells. These borrow just a few laws from mathematics to then establish their own pulse. Human and metronome: The words "human" and "and" are monosyllabic, but the metronome has three syllables - even in language, the swinging, irregular pulses of life are reflected. (Some call it swing.)
Even in the complex realms navigated by Jonathan Barber, this organic deviation from the computational can still be felt. It is this that makes played music come alive. Barber's meters are more than what the Greek root of the term denotes: verse and syllable measure. As they continuously vary, they speak the dialect of corporeality - they tell of dragging and striving forward, of stretching and compressing experienced time, and of the constant reference to what has already been played.
What makes Barber's rhythms so captivating? That they come from organic sensation but are structured by a sharp mind. It could be said: What the metronome "can" do - dividing time into objectively equal units - no living being will ever be able to do. Jonathan Barber, on the other hand, lets his beats tell of the tensions of bodily sensation, of the double and hidden meaning of rhythms when a groove seemingly "comments on itself." This, in turn, cannot be learned by any machine - and if it ever can, it will be humans who have taught it, masters of accent and subtle shift, like Jonathan Barber.
Was macht Barbers Rhythmen so fesselnd?
