A board game recently released by Osprey Publishing based on the novel by Susanna Clarke.

Very helpful! My fiance & I are playing this and I'm making sure at least one of us understands before we set the whole thing up. The book was incredible!

Miss Redruth is from the Ladies of Grace Adieu, a collection of shortstories by Clarke set in the world of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. She actually began writing Ladies before JS&MN, but released the novel first, and LoGA came later.

Ah thanks - I have read The Ladies of Grace Adieu but had forgotten the name. I'll have to refresh my memory.

Have just googled her (modern day magic!) and apparently she appears very briefly in Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell as the only female present when the society of magicians reconvenes in York at the end of the book.

Thanks for the info on the connection as I saw the audio book "Ladies of grace" and had not heard of it and I read a bit of a overview but it was too vague and it didn't even mention about the direct connection to JS&N, except for mentioning an supernatural/ fae entanglements plot again. Which I would read the new one as I know nothing about it and it would be a surprise but that is why I was going to get the audio book so if it really wasn't intriguing ,it wouldn't be so bad cost wise. Lol

Another thing it seems to me the game may have left out - from a perhaps faulty memory of the book having read it many years ago - is the humour? And also that there was a kind of eerie, cumulative darkness or melancholy, perhaps both too subtle for any boardgame to evoke. But your talking about it has made me want to re read the book even more.

Yes - the wit and also the 'style' as in some respects the book reads very much like it was written at the time in which it is set. Much else besides but it would be asking too much to expect the game designers to be able to capture it all. Susanna Clarke has her name on the cover so she must be happy to acknowledge it, or maybe if she is unable to work on another novel she must capitalise on what she has so far produced.

I should unsubscribe, you are costing me too much money. In the past few weeks you have caused me to buy: The Woods, The Jonathan Strange novel, Daisho rules (an earlier video) and Sengoku Demon Hunter (indirectly while researching Daisho). As I have just got the book and it is in my reading queue I will hold off this game until I have read it. I am not sure what the market is for this game, maybe it is aimed at fans of the book or the TV series, who may not be avid gamers. I do play board games but I don’t think the other members of my group are Jonathan Strange fans. I will take a decision in a couple of months. A few years ago a Gormenghast board game was published, copies can still be found in remainder stores like The Works I believe.

Your situation of fans of the book vis a vis board game enthusiasts is exactly what I mean - it will be interesting to hear what happens and their reaction if you do acquire the game. I was unaware of the Gormenghast game - perhaps it coincided with the TV series - and I will investigate. Hope you enjoy the book - I couldn't put it down.
