I met Johnathan Winters when I was in the Marines training recruits in San Diego. He was doing a pilot for a TV show and was dressed as a Drill Instructor. He ‘borrowed’ one of our recruit platoons and did a walk through as a Drill Instructor. We told the recruits not to laugh. I had been a fan since I was a kid. Our family never missed him when he was on TV and had all his albums memorized. Semper Fi Johnathan and RIP.

I lived in Toluca lake in the early nineties. After church on Sundays, I'd go to Marie Callenders for lunch. Jonathan Winters often came in wearing overalls and a red tee shirt. He'd go table to table, booth to booth visiting with the patrons. Incredibly kind and funny man.

He had some weird nights, though -- some where he did nothing but drop bricks and clunkers, and a few (very few) when he was just _mean._ I wish I could cite specifics like shows, hosts, or whatever, but I can't. Growing up in the 50s, got our first TV about '54, remember the variety shows and then Johnny came on the scene and I discovered Jonathan Winters and his hilarious brand of humor. A high school classmate and I were car crazy and working on our cars and listening to one of Jonny's LP comedy albums provided hours of side splitting laughter trying to work on our cars. Good memories. Such good memories. Jonny's epic improvisations were just incredible. I remember someone would give him a random object and he'd create a hilarious comedy routine around that object. Miss him and that era dearly.

It would have been an experience to have Jonathan Winters as a friend or Uncle, surely never a dull moment. Everything I've read and heard he was a very kind man. One of my favorite stories about him was from Robin Williams after Jonathan had parked in a handicap spot. Getting out a woman snapped; "You don't look handicapped to me!". Jonathan responded; "Madam can you see inside my mind?". Rest in Peace sir.

I will never forget one Tonight Show, and I was a kid at the time, when Jonathan Winters was on and he was apparently manic at the time. But he was so extraordinary, so funny that Johnny just gave him the whole show. Johnny stopped for commercial, came back, and let Jonathan do his thing. There were other guests we never got to see, Johnny just let Jonathan go. Jonathan was not so manic that he wasn't able to appreciate that he had an audience and a task, but he was just manic enough that he was able to keep up a level of performance that I remember to this day. If you could find that day, I would so appreciate seeing it again.
