TADARRRRR, reminds me of Centre Parcs, 3 years ago (where we should have been last week) when I was walking with my grandson and jumped onto a fallen tree, saying the exact same TARDARRR, until I found I could not sop myself and went head first over the top lol! What a great little spot this is and a place (like many others) we have been going to visit for years, so this has made our motivation even stronger, cheers Alan

Always been a favourite of mine since my first visit in 1970. In those days we parked our minibus on the slope overlooking the tarn (along with everyone else) and had no idea of its history. We just enjoyed the beauty. A few years later we went over one moonlit night in the middle of winter, and watched skaters on the tarn. There were plenty of folk there, including a chap with a portable hot dog stall down by the dam.

Thank you. I'm with you on that one, I loved it when I first went in 1970, and enjoy it just as much nowadays. A good friend of mine was there three weeks ago, and saw something I haven't seen for a number of years, a small inversion lifting off the water. She said it was magical.

Thank you. I remember my first ever visit to Tarn Hows in 1970. No car park as it is today, we actually parked on the grass overlooking the tarn along with everyone else!

Thank you. It's one of my favourite places. Not a long or demanding walk, but can be used as a base for other walks such as Black Crag and Holm Fell. It is also in the Cumbria Way footpath. Enjoy.

Great video.. I have been to this Tarn, but prefer the more natural ones myself, great views and a brilliant place for families to visit with pushchairs.. Possibly why I have not returned.. And thanks again for the history lesson, I wish I knew this before I visited.. I wonder when it was theTarn last froze over enough to ice skate on....

My wife and I went at the end of January 2010 and it was frozen solid, although no one was actually skating. But some guys were toboganning down the hill and onto the tarn and it held them. Before we met, my wife went over when she was dating her first husband in the early sixties, probably 1963/64, and not only were there skaters, there was hot dog seller on the ice doing good trade. They stayed until after the sun went down, and people were skating under the full moon. She said it was a magical experience.

It does sound magical indeed, like something you would see in an old B/W movie.. It is a lovely Tarn and somewhere I could easily take my grandchildren too.. Maybe not to Ice skate on though.. ;)

I'm not a skater either, but I've taken nieces and nephews, and they have all loved it.

+jonathancraigguides Amazing times had. At the time they had no electricity, No running water, No indoor bathroom just a block house with a hole in it. Great times. Pigs and sheep running through the garden in the morning being chased by the farmer.
