+++ ABOUT THIS VIDEO +++
In this video, independent dance pop singer/songwriter JONATHAN MILLER discusses the difference between covering a song, sampling a song, and interpolating a song in music. If you've ever wanted to know what is interpolation in music or what is the difference between sampling and covering a song then this video can help you. Cover songs and sampling songs often get confused with one other as well as sampling and interpolation like Ava Max's song "My Head and My Heart" containing an interpolation of ATC's "Around the World (La La La La La)" so hopefully this video will clarify the difference between them. You'll also learn the licenses you need to do each of these things whether you are covering a song, sampling a song, or interpolating a song!

Dre Dre’s _Ain’t nothing but a G thang_ samples Leon Hayes’ song: _I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You_ but, Coolio’s _Fantastic Voyage_ , on the other hand, is an interpolation of Lakeside’s song also called: _Fantastic Voyage._ Not a sample but an interpolation.

Let's say I recreate a loop with my own instruments as a template, dissect it by subtracting different parts from the score and then changed the note pattern into a different sounding score? Would that be okay?

Boils down to this: If you're using copyrighted audio, you need a mechanical license. That's called sampling. If you're arranging or covering copyrighted music, you need a mechanical license.

I love sampling, my dream sample is "More than a woman" by Aaliyah, but we all know the issue with that 😭

Is it also interpolation when you use pieces of lyrics from a song and create your own melody from it? An example is The Weeknd’s “Secrets” (from Talking in Your Sleep by The Romantics)
@JonathanMillerMusic
@JonathanMillerMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Actually in that example it's more so classified as a sample. When it comes to lyrics, things get a little tricky because it depends on how much of them are used, but for the example you asked I would call it a "sample." :)

I’d argue her scenario is interpolation

Oh, so interpolation only applies to melodies, right? Cause I was getting all confused with people saying that Olivia Rodrigo interpolated Taylor Swift’s song by using the same chord progression of her bridge. Cause, I mean, there’s thousands of songs that use the same exact chord progressions! So I’m a little confused haha
@JonathanMillerMusic
@JonathanMillerMusic 2 жыл бұрын
hahaha yes it usually applies to melodies! Chord progressions get used all the time. Sometimes you can make the case of it being an exact copy but not always. :)

As a music listener, sampling is so that really bothers me of a song I already love , especially at the beginning because it excites me that it’s gonna be a cover and now music lovers will love that song but no…. Interpolation it’s really cool when they go with a whole new lyrics like : Kings and Queens by Ava Max and you give love a bad name by Bon Jovi both use interpolation of Bonnie Tyler’s if I was man. That was pretty cool Also Miley now using Bruno Mars’s when I was your man first strophe as a choir it’s also really cool. I loved how she used those strophes of the song. But here is the thing from the same Ava max hated her interpolation of Barbie girl that was just lazy and pretentious putting a woke agenda shoe horned and I adore Ariana Grande but also hated her interpolation of my favorite things. so as music listener. Covers hell yeah 100% I do love them. Interpolation it’s a mix bag but it’s mostly a yes for me. Samples it’s no, they generally bother me

Hanson did a cover song 🎵 like money that’s what I want and the original composer is Barrett strong and sample a song is a song 🎵 that came from a original artist like my girl was the original artist and mcfly I need a women was the sample new recording of the song 🎵 and you know that I need a women is a sample song because it came from a original artist.

Two lyrics from two different songs by different artists... What's this called? Face down, ass up, that's the was we like to f*ck. Engine off, windows up, that's the way we like to bump. I call it lyrical structural parallelism but what's it actually called? I don't think it counts as any of the three in this video nor does 'parody' seem like it fits...
