For me, one of the upsides of lockdown has been learning to be resourceful and reconnect with my creative roots. I’ve gone back to old school crafting techniques, using only what I had at home to dream up this uplifting tutorial which I filmed and edited myself entirely on my phone! It’s was so tough, but I did it. I set myself a challenge and it paid off. I think!
ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT UK AFFILIATE LINK
For all of my UK followers if you enjoyed watching today’s tutorial please use Annie Sloan Chalk paint affiliate link for any of the materials you might of seen in this tutorial, I’d be truly grateful
UK ONLY…..tidd.ly/34p1ten
And for my oversea friends i’ll apologise no affiliate link as of yet just UK but I’ll be sure to keep you informed.
Now is the perfect time to connect deeply with our inner most selves - the bit we often neglect through work, hectic living and generally filling our lives with stuff. This little project is the opposite. It is about working ONLY with what you have to create something beautiful, practical and unique to you, maybe to use as a gratitude journal or sketchbook to stay focused through challenging times and keep your creative spark alive. What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts below. And see photos of your completed pictures.
If you'd like to find out more about my furniture painting techniques and find more inspiration then please head over to my blog hjonathonmarcmendes.com

When I was a small child we would get very beat up, messy, abused & dirty books at school. We would use brown paper bags to make book covers for them.- exactly the same as you did here - except we could not cover the inside flap with the first page as you did - instead we would cut a piece of paper to glue over the inside of the cover - only getting glue onto the cover & never the book. Then we could use water paints or crayons to decorate the cover we had made - making sure we wrote the title on the outside.I would save paper grocery store bags for weeks before school started to cut up to get the paper I needed.

My Catholic elementary school required us to cover our textbooks with brown-paper covers. My mother always used grocery bags. I had forgotten about that!

Did the same with the paper bags in elementary school, but in college, I found cling wrap on the new books not only kept the cover looking new, (resale value) but also was easier to read the title on the stack of books to be able to grab the correct book in a hurry.

I am so glad I found this video. My style is "country cottage", so this will fit right in. I had a couple of lamps that I wanted to raise up, because I didn't want to replace the lamps. I lost my dad raised pigeons all his life and I lost him about 6 years ago. Now, I find everything I need on the internet and don't use books, but I just couldn't get rid any of his books. Books I would never read, like "The six principles of pigeon-keeping". This is the perfect way to raise my lamps , save and display his books. Perfect! Problem solved!

TIP: you don’t need to waste expensive paint like Annie Sloan on the cover. You actually don’t need to paint the cover at all. Just glue the fabric straight onto an unpainted book cover. The BEST results happen when you let each stage dry in between as this will be less fiddle and less messy. Love the fabric you chose here Jonathon.

I would imagine that if the fabric is very light and the book cover is dark, then it makes sense. Otherwise, I'd just skip the painting part.

He also explains that paint will mattify (my term, not his) the shine from the book cover; at times that shiny-ness could be seen through the lighter parts of the new cover fabric.
@Lisa-hc3uq
@Lisa-hc3uq 2 жыл бұрын
@@myrmaad Yes, he went over the reasons and he did explain why..His explanation made perfect sense. I agree with him too, it's a brilliant idea. If you're gluing light colored fabric over a dark colored book, the dark color will show through the lighter fabric. His technique of painting the cover white prior to covering is similar to priming a wall / using Kiltz on a dark colored wall before painting it a light color. It's so the dark colored paint won't show through.

I can feel a question bubbling up while you're working away (pun intended) ;) and then I laugh because you always answer it. I also feel immediately like doing the project...and confident that I can. Cannot wait to scope pillow cases and old dresses or fabrics for this purpose and of course furniture too. Thank you!

I have done books similar to this, many years ago when I really didn't know what I was doing, and for that period of my life it was okay. Today, I would not be happy with them! This is a wonderful tutorial on the best way to approach it. Like you, I'm pretty much a perfectionist so I LOVE the time you take to talk about and demonstrate the technique. I also like understanding why a wrinkle or bubble might appear as it dries when there hadn't been one while working on it. These are the little secrets to success! I would like to try to shabby it up a bit so I might try that. Thank you for sharing!
