@Josh derp Best in the world KZfaq skater? If that's what you mean then sure. I hope you don't mean best in the world in general. If so I'm going to have to go with the old, "your clearly a child who knows nothing about anything." I like the guy but he's a KZfaq skater for a reason. He's not good enough to be an am for the regular companies, much less a pro, much less best in the world.

I think most big brands may not have him and not because of his skill level. Its because his style is not typical for a big brand to showcase. They want skaters who do the typical same shit. Big gaps, stairs, competition shit, etc... His style is much more technical than that. Some skate companies showcase different styles of boarding with their pros but not the huge brands. And ive seen it first hand. Look at the nike sb brand. Name me one skater who skates for them that does freestyle tricks? None. But then you take the board brand Almost, and look at the roster they had. Mullen, daewon, etc... So many styles showcased by them. What it boils down to is not lack of skill of the boarder, but lack of appreciation by the brands.

Hey Nine Club! It would be really incredible to eventually interview Giger because not only is he outside the traditional skate industry bubble, as well as the LA/USA skate scene. Beyond that he is definitely pushing his skating towards the technicality of Mullen and carrying the torch for the next Gen doing freestyle tricks in the street. Regardless absolutely love all the content coming as a fan since Ep 1, keep killing it Chris, Rog, and Kelly!

I get what you're saying bud, but if you go back and watch the tapes it's really not even close, Rodney pushed progression at a. Where the tricks he was doing did not even exist. Also his accuracy was so high from being the freestyle champion that he would fry most skater in a game of skate including many Pros even at his age currently. He is one of the greatest to ever do it and could sit at the table of the top forever

Anecdotal obviously, but I spent many years working towards the goal of becoming a professional skate filmer. After just seeing how utterly poorly skate filmers were generally treated by skate media on the back end, I kinda made it a goal to do skate projects on my own terms. So I started this channel based on high-speed slow motion and started stepping outside of the skate industry for my income and career leverage. One of the best decisions of my life. Because of my KZfaq career I've found my way into projects with HBO, PBS, Discovery Network etc. I've co-founded channels that have gained millions of followers. My works have been seen by hundreds of millions of people across the globe. I've made a living that is leagues better than my previous path and more importantly with the skate stuff, because I had financial flexibility and my own platform I've been able to make all kinds of skate videos that I am personally stoked on and also have an audience to enjoy it. I've gotten to pay skaters to be a part of sponsored videos and thus get to feed back into the skate community as well. I love KZfaq man. I know the industry has always had hangups with people who are willing to talk to their camera, but at it's most core they are out there having fun and getting more people stoked to get out and skate. Jonny is both awesomely talented and in my experience a super nice human being. I'm stoked to see him getting more recognition. I also think it's rad you guys are willing to talk about social media in a manner that isn't so negative. God knows we've seen the brunt end of the clique mentality of skateboarding in full force. It's nice to be able to just speak eye to eye with other dudes who love skating as much as we do. Cheers!

Chiming in as an old head (former mid 2000's skate rat). KZfaq and social media has done away with the mystique of the skateboarder. Back in the day, all you had were video parts and magazine coverage of these guys. Dudes like Andrew Reynolds, Erik Ellington, etc. all you got to see were those parts. Nowadays, you get to really see and know the skateboarder (at least with the new breed of vlogger skaters) as opposed to the old-school skaters that are on "highly pedigreed" brands today. There's also the question of skill. It's undeniable that a lot of these KZfaq skaters (while they're very good) are just not as good as the skateboarders on big brands. What I think will happen is you'll get a blend of the two. Skaters who are phenomenally good, stylish, and can dominate social media will be the true winners. Someone like Neen Williams comes to mind as this new breed.

Well duh, since I started skating back in the day, skateboarding has gone from a hobby to a professional sport with professional athletes getting paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. @rajs4719
@rajs4719 4 жыл бұрын
@@i-never-look-at-replies-lol I think it goes a bit deeper than that. Skateboarding is subjective, whereas sports like football and basketball are objective. This means that skaters who are objectively very talented such as Johnny Giger are shunned by the industry as they are not cool enough or marketable enough. Before the industry had a bigger influence and they decided which skaters got coverage because you would only see skating in a magazine once a month. Now anyone can put themselves out there to the world and these guys are doing well because they're more relatable and they're not relying on the industry to give them the coverage.

I’m an independent musician and it seems to me that the skateboarding world is going through a similar thing to what has happened within the music industry. Gone are the days of “having” to be signed to a label to get your music out there. They can still certainly help your exposure to larger audiences for sure, but they are not essential nowadays. You can accomplish a lot by just working hard and releasing your art on your own terms. There are pros and cons no doubt, but it kind of puts you in charge of your own destiny to a point. Keep it up, from way down in New Zealand 🇳🇿 Thought JG’s part was sick 🔥 1000%

*ACTUALLY* Revive in a way does have a personal channel, it's The ShredQuarters YT channel which is the name of their online store and warehouse skate park. It in a way is the company page, Andy and Brian I believe made it a year ago but unfortunately it didn't preform very well with views and subscribers. But none the less the idea of the channel was to post weekly updates and skate content from within the shop and team. But yes they all support and keep it afloat and take care of each other, frequently collaborating with each other on their various channels which boast different types of content while still keeping a heavy love for skateboarding.

Schrocks personal account is the company channel. He keeps it that way because that way he does not have to share the 1.6 million dollars he received for it last year only from youtube with the riders and employees. Clever or antisocial.. you decide.

To be completely serious, I would treasure a Nine Club interview with Jonny Giger. He is easily my favouite skater of the 'new school' as it were. We all watched Rodney Mullen and wished we could be like him. Giger put in the work and now he is.

Really enjoyed the positive vibes here. I remember it used to be really easy to be labelled as a “poser” back in the day if you didn’t fit the popular mould of skater for the time. This always struck me as going against what skating is all about since skating is about doing whatever the hell you want. I like seeing the skate community evolving past the old hateful ways, especially from a group as badass as this.

4:20 I think this is a function of the era in which skateboarding matured, the late 80s and early 90s. Slacker culture was prevalent and self-promotion was kinda "lame"

Just some other points/things to add: I am not a skater and can’t even do a single trick, yet I follow Johnny Giger. His demographic is not just skater viewership, but people who admire/respect skill and good content. I would have never known about Revive and I would have never known many other pages (such as this one) that I now follow all starting around Mr. Giger. He is an incredible guy.

Wow how did i miss that? Great to see Jonny gets some little exposure from the "traditional" scene. You get to know people like Jonny a little when you follow them around on KZfaq. It's a little more personal, unlike a high quality cooperate commercial where you're no really sure if everything is genuine. Thinking about it, your regular podcast does almost the same for a big part. For example, before you had Leticia or Nyjah on the show i had no idea if they were entitled assholes or what. All i knew so far was pretty vague. After it i knew those people are cool but now i like them because they proved that they are nice humans, not because they are good a street contests or so. Maybe that doesn't convince a 16 year old, but i'll be 38 tomorrow and i would happily favour a Jonny Giger product board over something else, even if i thought the other one looked a little doper. 5 or 10 bucks on patreon? Sure, i can easily afford it and it's not like i don't get anything back. He get's to have some money and i get to watch a video once a week. Nothing more fair than that. For example i became an instant fanboy of Riley after you had him on. All i need to properly know who i'm dealing with and these KZfaq channels do exactly that for each of them. I think it is a super great way to have a (maybe little smaller) but very loyal fanbase.

He is doing something with algorithms too it seems, he appeared on my KZfaq feed one day. I’ve been inspired to start skating again at almost 46, I’ve got cancer so a couple of years of decline. The worst that can happen is I break a bone, I would’ve enjoyed breaking that bone. I’ve broken lots over the years, I could honestly handle one right now. I found you guys after him, so he is doing for people beyond your imagination.

if you live in smaller markets, not everything comes out to your neck of the woods. I live in a small city in Canada, even the shops that sell the brands I prefer, i usually have to special order the specific decks I want. I've contemplated ordering a board off of amazon, but only after all the skate shops in my city didn't have the board/couldn't order it (for whatever reason).
