Why do you have to start a controversy where there was none? No one is questioning how he achieved his success. Most Asian Americans I know earned everything they have. The fact he's Asian American DOES mean something, because a culture's values (about work ethics, education, etc), and how economically and family stable a group is impact its chances of success in life.

I love how this guy became a SEAL, then decided to go to Harvard for med school, then while practicing he casual decides to become an astronaut while simultaneously becoming a Navy helicopter pilot. @@kevinzhang6623 There is a difference, the first one is a label to try and divide Americans. The Second one is the reality, where your ethnicity does not affect your legal status as an American. With a name like yours i’d wager you play identity politics and this concept is too ‘extreme’ for you.
@kevinzhang6623

I understand now, you're that type of person that presumes someone's opinions from their name. I don't care about identity politics but clearly you do. "Asian American" or in Jonny Kim's case, "Korean American" is not identity politics itself but describes an American citizen of Korean descent. The connotation is obvious. Learn to not let others' words penetrate through your thin skin. Jonny Kim himself says he's a proud American and the bonds he's formed with fellow SEALs transcend race. Who is anyone to say he's wrong about how he feels about his own life? He also says he's a proud Korean American meaning proud of the culture and values he was raised on, and his parents' story of immigrating and building a life here.

Despite being a Seal, an Astronaut and a Medical Doctor, his being Asian is still talked about is pretty sad. Being an Asian was a random mutation he had no control over, he did however earn his Seal trident and his medical degree, and to top it off also became an astronaut. Those are extremely rare accomplishments. Yet for all these accomplishments he is still only referred to as a hyphenated American, not just a plain (American). If his last name was O'Neil born and bred in Boston with red hair I doubt these television shows would even make a big deal of his Irishness because he would just be an American . Period. 🙄

@grahamfloyd3451

When you stop saying it's irrelevant, then it will have become irrelevant. When the dominant group keeps trying to force minorities to assimilate, then it's relevant. If I send 5 white guys to space, I don't have to say they are white, it's a given. If I send 5 non white guys to space, and mention the fact they aren't white, a bunch of white guys will be very upset. Why are they upset? That's what racism is, you've absorbed it so strongly you can't even perceive a different paradigm. What makes America great is how our nation, better than others, disperses power broadly. That makes us stronger. Don't be afraid to cede some of that power you're clinging to so strongly.
