David Watkins takes us from his earliest rugby days in rugby union with Newport, Wales and the British and Irish Lions to his decision to move north to rugby league with Salford, a decision that resulted in him being shunned by the rugby union community. The Only player to ever captain the British and Irish Lions in Rugby Union and Great Britain in Rugby League.
A canny, darting fly-half from the mining community of Blaina in north Gwent, Watkins used his sport to expand his horizons and make his name known and respected worldwide.

I was born in Salford, part of early life growing up in a Boys Home, the one highlight for 3 Schoolmates, and I was saving enough money to watch the (Quality Street) gang play at the Willows every second cold Friday evening. David was a magical and marvelous wizard of a player along with 12 other heroes, one of my favorites, the late Colin Dixon. Was privileged to see the lads win the Championship in 74 and 76 before emigrating to South Africa. Sadly, in the last few months, we have lost 3 of that superb team, Mike Coulman,Eric Prescott, and now (Dai) Watkins.Sincere condolences to the Watkins Family,RIP David and thank you for all those wonderful floodlight Friday nights at the Willows.

Sadly I'm too young to have seen you pull on the Salford RL jersey but from what I've been told you were up there with the greatest ever players to wear the famous red shirt. RIP Mr Watkins.... gone but never forgotten.👹

In 60 yearsof watching rugby I have never seen a finer outside half, his blistering pace and ligtning sidestep off either foot made you shiver wth excitement. Thank you Dai for so many happy memories. And I was there for that awesome win against the All Blacks.

I was there when he made his debut for Solly. I recall him having a serios injury when he was about 29. I rang the hospital afer his opération to ask how he has. Thé nurse said one moment. He then came on the phone.

Wales were always one game away from beating the All blacks that time, can you imagine in 67, Watkins "retired" just before they lost to the AB, and in 78, they lost to the AB after just losing Edwards and Bennet
