In this video, I look back at how I problem solved drawing the elephant skin in one of my favourite drawings 'August'. It was really interesting to reflect on the drawing processes I used so I hope you find this deep dive useful. Let me know if you enjoy this type of content and what artwork you’d like me to breakdown next.

I've just recently started drawing portraits and more realistic things as opposed what used to draw, which was mostly anime lol. I've been learning to use lots of different tools I didn't even know existed before and I've gotten pretty good but I often feel like I'm doing something wrong, like I'm using the wrong tool in the wrong way, and this video really helped boost my confidence. Thank you friend :) you're an amazing artist and thanks to you I'll become better as well

WOW! I love the way you explain your process and thinking. You make every thing look so easy that it is wonderful to hear how you work through problem areas and persist. That makes it easier for me to keep on going with a project - realizing professionals like you have the same problems - and how to work through them. (I hope I explained this right) Thank you so much!

Nice vid Jono 👍 You mention about how you are constantly thinking when drawing...as it does take alot of concentration, do you ever have a tired mind but really want to draw? I work a day job and draw in my studio with what spare time i have but after work its hard to focus my thought sometimes (tired mind)...just wondered if or how you would deal with that? All the best buddy 👍

Excellent drawing. I like the tip on building from medium shade. I normally pull from dark shadows so I'm going to switch and try building up more medium tones. I want to try an elephant holding a limp Zulu warrior in its tusks.

Jono i have a question...... I FIND WHEN I AM DRAWING ON A FLAT SURFACE AS YOU DO I SOMEHOW LOSE PRESPECTIVE SO WHEN I HOLD THE DRAWING UP WHAT LOOKED GOOD LAYING FLAT NOW LOOKS SCEWED WHEN UPRIGHT FACING ME How do i fix this problem even when i use grids the same happens what can i do ... you are my favorite pencil artist world wide my 2nd is Emanuele Dascanio sometimes its difficult to chose you are both equally great artists and i mean that from the bottom of my heart i am 61 yrs old i pray i can draw just 1 drawing before i pass that rivals the quality you and/or Emanuel create chances are slim and i am no artist but a man must have a dream thank u my friend

Im sure you will! regarding the perspective though, its a tough one, I have always felt quite safe with the grid to help me not lose perspective when working flat, how frequently do you lift it up to check? and how loose is your grid?

@@JonoDry first allow me to thank you for your getting back to me on this i am sure you are very busy i feel privileged sincerely.. to answer your questions : i have to be honest i normally try a 2 to 3 inch square grid pattern over the entire page and try to fit things in on a very light sketch to begin with and i don't have a set time to lift the paper but since i have this difficulty i tend to lift the paper often i even had an eye exam done to make sure i wasn't seeing things wrong and i have been practicing parallels lines and cube drawing to make sure i do not have a skewed sense within myself and therefore manifesting the skew on paper all seems fine and i ask others how my grid looks and my drawing of cubes and parallels and no complaints from anyone so, all looks good i cant help but think its me somehow in my skill set or lack thereof ... Thank you so much for your great work your talent is breathtaking sincerely D
