Quirky London Walks 4 : Trafalgar Square and Whitehall
This is a short walk for anyone who is in the area and has some time to kill. Starting at Trafalgar Square Joolz talks about London's Smallest Police Station, Nelson's Column, a big blue cock and how Walt Disney got the idea for Burt in Mary Poppins.
Then over to King Charles's statue, which kept getting moved around and stands in the exact centre of London.
Across the road to Admiralty Arch and one of the famous Noses of Soho.
Learn also how London got its pavements and what the curious mark on the kerb stone in Whitehall means. Then up Whitehall to Banqueting House where King Charles had his head chopped off!

The more I watch of these the more deeply I appreciate them. Entertaining and educational. I come back and re-watch each 3 or 4 times, just to get it all. The time and effort in researching and production organizing is obviously enormous. Joolz has 49K subscribers but at this writing, less than 75 Patreon supporters. A microscopic pittance in comparison to their value !! I invite other subscribers to make at least a small effort to rectify this imbalance.

Julian, I went to London for the first time last October 2018. My friends were so annoyed with me, because everywhere we went I kept spouting little odd facts about the places 😂 I just re-watched this video and LOVE it! I'm taking my 18yr nephew to London March 2020. I will definitely look for the. Noses of SoHo.

Oh, that’s a good one! I have a cousin, now retired from the force, who spent many years on 10 Downing St, back in the days when one could walk right up the street, stand out front, take photos, & watch people going in & coming out. One day, we were walking through Trafalgar Square, & he showed me the little structure that is London’s smallest police station. You are the only other person I have heard mention it. 👍🙋‍♀️🥂 Very nice!!

I got yelled at today in Grand Central Terminal for walking to the end of a platform to get a view of the converging train tracks. But there wasn’t a sign or line or anything. I told the man I was an enthusiast. I only wound up with a picture of my finger. And one of my leg. And I deleted both of them

Did you know that the imperial measurements for length are beside the wall on the National Gallery side of the Square. Before building started on the Victoria Line Tube a group of engineers had to verify the steel bands, (not the empty oil barrel drums} these are steel measuring tapes that are held under tension using an old fashioned hand held weight scale. Reading would be taken by an engineer at both ends, 3 readings would be taken and the average used as the final reading.

The base of the column is pointed SSE, however Nelson's head is turned to his right which is SSW. I drew a line approximating the direction of his gaze and, if extended far enough, goes toward the waters off Cape Trafalgar in Spain, the site of his victory.

That's quite ungracious of Charles not forgiving his executioner - that was the common practice since medieval times. It's not the executioner's fault, he's just doing his job. In fact aristocrats would often tip their executioner to make sure they did a good job and took off the head with one blow. It took three chops to sever Mary Queen of Scots' head, during which she was still alive.

Love your videos. Very informative. However, I have to differ on one point and that’s what you termed an admiralty mark on that kerb stone. I think it’s a benchmark which used to be chiselled into solid locations to mark fixed surveyed points which could be used in future surveys. They can be found all over the UK and used to be recorded on Ordnance Survey maps together with the height or other relevant information.
@Joolzguides
@Joolzguides 5 жыл бұрын
hi. Thanks. I'm glad you pointed that out. I have often wondered about all those marks on the stones. I thought they were stone masons marks. I read this about the admiralty in a book and I rather liked the story. I shall continue to believe it's true since it does no harm. Most of my videos are about myths and stories that I heard "down the pub" and local rumours so there are a few errors. I'm going to hang onto this one for now though!

Yes. This is known in heraldry as a Pheon and more commonly the Broad Arrow. It was used by the British government starting in the 19th century. It was adopted by the War Department as well and can often be found on case markings of British Munitions.
