We're talking here about instilling 'muscle memory' for a driving task. Some instructors say 'only indicate if there's somebody behind you'. But how do you know that unless you check properly - at the last possible instant before moving away? You might have missed something the last time you checked, or if there's a really close intersection behind you, someone might come flying around the corner after you last looked and tries to go straight around you. The whole point of indicating is to warn the person behind you that you're moving away but in order to check what's behind you need to do the mirrors and blind spot check - so why complicate your normal process of 'mirrors, indicate, blind spot check' by selectively dropping one components of that suite of checks. By all means, properly check that there's nobody behind and make a conscious decision not to indicate - but why? Keep driving simple. Thanks for the question.

In your driving test the only time you would do more than 50 would be if you were 100% certain of where you are and what the speed limit is. Otherwise the strategy is to make a statement (not ask a question) that you are going to assume 50 until you see a sign stating something different. That way the assessor knows your reason for travelling at that speed and won't ping you for going too slow. Usually after you make that statement, the assessor will let you know the speed limit because they don't want your slow driving to create a hazard. Good question!

Depends what you're doing. If simply braking, then it's central mirror and then brakes (taking into account the size and distance of any vehicles behind you). If slowing down to turn, then it's central mirror, side mirror (for the direction that you're turning), turn signal, and then brakes. If there's a gap between your vehicle and the kerb (such as a bike lane) and you're not moving very quickly (i.e. slower than bike traffic), then you should also check your blind spot (over your shoulder in the direction of the kerb) in case a bike is lurking in your blind spot and moving at the same speed or quicker than you.
