Joplin doesn't have direct control of the siren system. Its tied to a national weather warning system, either NWS or NOAA iirc. Whoever was on duty there makes the call county by county as severe weather tracks across the region. That person dropped the ball and likely got in a Lot of trouble.

Why is it that people are so amazed at an ordinary occurrence ofWEATHER ?
@enchantedrosebooks

It was because it wasn't on the radar, there was no warning and it came out of absolute no where. The national weather service didn't even see this coming.
@jackson65659
@jackson65659 Ай бұрын
Because weather similar to this in this city ended up being one of the most devastating tornadoes in recent history, and this one didn’t even have a warning. Tornadoes are common in Joplin, but because of the 2011 tornado, people here are, on average more fearful of tornadoes than in almost any other town or city in a tornado common area. So the lack of a warning for a tornado that was this destructive is a big deal. I know people whose houses were taken by this surprise tornado.
@drewg1981
@drewg1981 2 ай бұрын
debris? oh no... act like this is may 11th or something. this was a micro burst! Not actually a tornado. this is also the reason the ems didn't report it as a tornado until after it was over. tornado's are only categorized as such when you are able to observe the destruction it left. they have a damage scale every insurance company uses to determine the amount of total loss in damages for the city. this is also a way of accurately determining what ef scale should be used. also bet you didn't know this... when a forecaster says you have an 80% chance of strong storms, wind and rain, its not based on 0-100 chance of rain like most people think. what is actually being measured is the amount of the viewing area that will receive this weather.

@drewg1981 That is absolutely incorrect. I live in Joplin. The National Weather Service out of Springfield classified this as an EF1 tornado. Go to their site. Its there for you to view. Take a drive through Duquesne, MO and tell me that was just a microburst. No serious person could say that. It uprooted and threw fully mature, 60 foot trees into houses and snapped 50+ telephone poles in the city. In one instance, it actually moved a garage off its foundation and threw it into a house 250 feet away. This happened off Rex Ave. Microbursts dont do what this tornado did. Also, EMS doesnt report tornadoes. The Fire Dept does or was supposed to. They failed and so did the weather service. No sirens, no warnings. The first we knew of this, is when it slammed into our neighborhoods, the power went out and my neighborhood got picked up and thrown around like it was in a tumble dryer. Microburst...........please.
