Jordan Peterson is left leanign when it comes to God and Universtiy even, but he says the opposite of what he truly believes in order to maintain his right wing donaters and book buyers on Amazon. @@clarkkent1521 I don't think that's quite it. I don't think it's just because it's the easy answer. I think what's true of Peterson is what's true of a lot of people - the scare tactics worked. The idea of an eternity of suffering in Hell as the consequence to not believing is scary enough that he wants to believe in God so that he can avoid that outcome. The issue is that he's smart enough to realize that just coming out and saying "I believe that God is real because I'm really scared of Hell" isn't even close to an intellectually rigorous defense of his position. In fact it's likely (as is the case with many religious folks) that they're not even consciously aware they're ultimately being driven by the fear that was instilled in them, often at a very young age. So he has to come up with these exceedingly incoherent rationalizations to delude himself into a sense of security since he lacks the courage to genuinely explore the idea that God may not exist. But understandably so to some extent, because he's been told there's an eternity of torture awaiting those who deny God. Peterson's issue is similar to Shapiro's issue. They undeniably have some high specs on their neurobiological hardware, but that hardware has been provisioned with some really shitty software so the output is still garbage. They're just better at abstracting their garbage outputs (ie making word salads) so it can be harder for the average person to see the flaws in their reasoning.

More of an indictment of religion in my eyes than Peterson himself. People try to worship him because people are becoming increasingly desperate for a leader. On the one hand, he's a college professor and a boomer. Those two things alone are enough to tell us what kind of flaws this man has. On the other hand, he is a boomer with _actual advice_ that millenials can use. Is it really any wonder they're worshipping him?

I’ve watched Peterson try to answer this question several times and with my average Joe intellect I’ve come to a conclusion on what I think his true answer is. Dr. Peterson is someone who is agnostic in a technical sense, but at the same time I think he admires the idea of Christ and the values laid out in Bible so much that to just simply say “i don’t know” wouldn’t be a sufficient enough answer for how deeply he’s probably thought about the question. That being said, even if he is agnostic, I think he takes so much inspiration from biblical stories and christ that he may view a simple shoulder shrug to be insulting to the judeo-Christian ethic, because at the end of the day you *don't* know, that’s what faith is. So I think the ultimate answer to kyles initial question that Jordan has been so confusingly trying to explain for years is that he lands in the agnosticism category but is essentially saying “well hell I really don’t know anything for sure but I want to live my life in a good way as if I was certain that god exists, because even if he doesn’t that’s a a more meaningful value system than nihilism.”

The next person who wants to ask Peterson whether he believes in God should instead ask him if he believes that the universe was created by some sort of metaphysical creature. This question is more precise and much harder to work around.
@michaelkistner6286
@michaelkistner6286 2 жыл бұрын
Very good. There seem to be two ways of framing the question. Does God exist as part of reality? Or, does reality exist as a manifestation of God's will? (I'm using the term reality as shorthand for something like 'what we experience') Framing it as a metaphysical question allows us to make progress toward an answer because it focuses attention on the nature of reality, with all the difficulty and uncertainty inherent in answering, instead of looking for empirical evidence for something that is by definition beyond the reach of such evidence. Put simply: does my direct experience of existing make more sense on a theistic or non-theistic metaphysics? That is a really difficult question to answer because we have to dissect the assumptions behind most everything we do. Yeah, and who is self-aware and intellectually honest enough to pull that off? But it's at least a starting point.

This is like when theists say that atheists "hate god", or that we actually believe but just want to "sin". They just don't like to confront the fact that we find their religious beliefs absurd. Thousands of years and they are still unable to agree amongst themselves, which is what you would expect because they just made it all up.
@brooklynbud1138
@brooklynbud1138 2 жыл бұрын
Well, that's why religion is based in "faith", not "fact", and why the idea of God/Gods across all human cultures are in some shape or form an ideal of what mankind ought to be. Every single culture on Earth has some sort of hero journey, or creation myth, or early mythical figure stories that form and reinforce the cultural norms, expectations, and values of that society. These are noble - dare I say, vital - elements of a functioning society. Religious stories, whether they're Christian or Greek mythology or any form of Pagan worship, are actually quite inspiring and cool. One could argue that modern day superheroes have an almost Greco-Roman-like mythology AND popularity behind them. We inherently know that Captain America isn't real, but that doesn't invalidate the principles he embodies. The trouble with religion starts when clerics insert themselves into political affairs. This was the intent with the US Constitution: to keep the Judeo-Christian values anchored into the laws and norms of the nation, while simultaneously removing the clerics' access to hard government power; the very problem that had plagued the great European societies from Antiquity all the way through the Napoleonic Age (freedom of religion AND separation of church and state). In my opinion, discarding religion/faith/deities out entirely and being godless is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It's when we start taking men in robes with funny hats, big scepters, and incense swingers seriously as arbiters and messengers of higher powers - AND giving them palpable political influence (whether hard or soft) - is where evil brews.

@@the_endgame Oh for sure and that’s what I’m getting at. JP has a very specific father-figure appeal to a lot of young-ish guys who need that. And he bases it with fairly straightforward self-help psychology that a lot of texts and other people talk about. But he hooks people and almost becomes a cult of personality with dangerous one-sided views. It’s painfully obvious a lot of the advice he gives out is really advice he’s personally trying on for size. He’s probably only “dangerous” to people who would make him their ultimate opinion to look up to.

Society just moves forward, making it more likely that people set in their ways will be left behind unless they change.
