The craziest thing about this lecture is that he just experienced everything he talks about regarding having a sick family member and such. And what I love most is that he was 100% correct and not only had wise words but leads but example and I would argue it saved his life after listening to the update podcast with his daughter recently. Jordan is a hell of a man and I have so much respect for him.

Anyone aware enough to recognize that they have psychological problems is already on the right track to fixing them, you don't really need someone to tell you what you already know. I think the problem with society is the other 95% of people that are confident that everything they do is right, they're almost completely controlled by emotion and operate at a very low level of self awareness. Unfortunately, I don't think any amount of reasoning can fix someone with a closed mind. How can you fix a problem if you won't even acknowledge that it's even a problem?

I've literally been the useful person at not 1 funeral, but 3. Both my grandparents and sister died within 6 months of each other. I spoke at all 3 funerals and wrote the eulogy for my sister. Only my father and I spoke at my sister's funeral. I was just as heart broken as everyone else in my family, but I was determined not to be a spectator or a passive mourner. It wasn't easy and honestly I don't think my family even appreciated the strength and courage it took to speak in front of a crowd. When all I wanted to do was be alone. All that to say, your efforts might not be appreciated, but you'll be able to look yourself in the mirror and be proud that you actually did something.

And unless your silly I bet you can agree that motivation for people to Excell in today's world is a great thing for them and potentially for everyone, maybe that kind of person drives them self like that thrugh university and a few years later manages to come up with some solution that changes the planet to a noticeable degree, not saying that's every case but I wanna see that you can see the fairness in the possibility of something like this working for someone.

"if you're hyperorderly, get a dog." I learned this by accident! I got my first dog when I was 29, a puppy. I was hyperorderly to the point that it interfered with my responsibilities. I would sometimes be an hour late to work, because I had to make sure the house that I was going to come home to was immaculate, though I lived alone and never had company. The first three months of having the dog we're not good months. I cared about the dog from day one but it wasn't until I actually fell in love with the dog and it became more important than the cleanliness and orderliness of my surroundings that I got better. What's funny is, after that, my house was kind of a wreck all of the time because I never learned how to do regular house cleaning. To an outsider, cleaning house looked like my hobby. I was always cleaning and reorganizing in my spare time; when that compulsion was gone, I would look up every now and again to find my house was an absolute disaster. I had to learn in my 30s how to keep a functional house clean.

@@SpockvsEgon 🤣🤣 Around this time, I called and I asked my mother how it is she keeps her house so clean. She was always a pretty compulsive about it but, as she got older, became a little more practical. She told me to clean one room a day. And keep it in the same rotation. This is in addition, of course, to cleaning as you go. When my mom would cook, she would have the sink about a quarter full of soapy water and, as she used a measuring cup, knife, etc, she would wash it rinse it and put it back up. By the time dinner was ready, everything was clean unless you were eating on it or being served from it. Gee.. I wonder where I got it from. 🤣

Sorry for you loss. I would almost say that being an only child at the MOMENT of the funeral & immediate aftermath would be preferable to what I KNOW I will be dealing with in the future. Although, I can say that if you had siblings that you love, then the only child thing can take its toll because you have no one to grieve with that truly understood your parents/relationship, etc...I have 3 siblings & am DREADING the day one of my parents die, because I will be grieving the loss of my parent & my siblings will BE the ones in the room fighting over $, possessions, not wanting to buck up & make decisions & then criticizing the one who does, etc... My husband & I knew that, due to the estrangement of him & his father, we would be a distraction to the people grieving at the funeral & really had no emotional need to go. We opted out of the whole thing. it gave US great peace, as my husband had already grieved the loss of a father decades before. Funerals are for the living, in my opinion. If your presence won't help the grieving living people, don't go.

This video reminds me of my mom. When her parents died, a whole family quarreling over family assets caused complete chaos for months following the funeral, tearing apart a lot of long-held family relations. Meanwhile, my mother became the bedrock for family members to go to when they were ready to actually discuss how they'd felt in the preceding year, and how to start repairing burnt bridges with other family members. My parents are the useful person at the funeral. Most of their siblings are too. They've got their shit together so to speak. But they also have other sufferings which they carry everyday. They manage to repress their suffering and overcome them most of the time. But some of the time its still pops out. And to grow around the enviroment where youre parents are the go to person to be the reliable person in a tragedy does teach you alot about live through observation but it also kinda feels like the attention youre suppose to get from them is ripped away from you because they are busy being helpful to others. And also the toxic enviroment is affecting your perception of life. Eg parents are firefighters and they bring you along to work so to speak. They put out flames and save people while you being a kid live through said enviroment everyday. There are positive and negative effects of living like that. Your parents are humans. They get tired too. They get stressed out too. And you mucking about around a burning building doesnt help. Nor is it an enviroment for you to grow. A seed needs good soil, plenty of water and adequate sunlight to grow to its fullest. Planting a seed around burning wreckages isnt the best place to be brought up to. it makes you tough and wise up but also tinders and burning wood also land on you. Teach you bad traits. And heavily affects your conscience and scars you with trauma. Life is suffering and tragedy happens all the time, and when youre the good person in world full of suffering, you have your hands full all the time.

“You’re not the plan, you’re the thing that can confront the obstacle to the plan.” He has a way of taking a step back and viewing situations from a logical place. This has been the mindset I’ve had for a while but the clinging to the raft or stick to stay afloat cut deeper than most of the podcasts, interviews, etc. No one person can be the plan, only help lead others to carry out a plan or mission. Thank you for posting this. This video has been in my suggestions for weeks now. Very glad I watched this today!

And also i recently discovered i didn't feel encouraged by my family (or friends for that matter) at all, cause they don't think i can handle responsabillities, so thank you Mr Dr Peterson, i'll manage i think, life and all Edit : I'm helpful at funerals though

Look into getting a proper diagnosis from a qualified mental health professional (preferably a psychiatrist competent in diagnosing your kinds of symptoms). In my early thirties, after some prompting from a colleague, I went to a really good psychiatrist and finally got an accurate diagnosis: I'd had ADHD all my life and didn't know it. It explained everything -- including all the symptoms you mentioned, which is why I'm replying; though there are many diagnoses which might cause the same symptoms, not only ADHD, which is why you need a proper diagnosis, not just a comment on the Internet -- and I finally found a pathway for treatment and recovery. Good luck, and all the best! 😊

A great many propositions are dependent only on assumption, and are not necessarily affected by the nature of assumption ..Most people don't realize that they they are a product of their society..why is it that you assume that what you value runs concurrent with what others both value and disregard? are you sure that you are in fact an independent individual? and not necesarily the product of other peoples ideas of what they say (covertly or overtly) you should be? have some introspection....study the assumptions behind your actions then study the assumptions behind your assumptions...

It's interesting you said you are good at funerals, both my best friends died and I really enjoyed writing up a paper to share with everyone about him at the funeral. And everyone liked it. It weird we talk about homes, or beat up cars, even thing like furniture infact that's a really weird one people value old and worn furniture and even stuff that looks like it was burned much more than they do things that look new. Not everyone appreciates it of course but it almost like people have been through shitty things and see it in other people, animals and objects and feel empathy towards it and appreciation knowing that they have also been through tough times and made it through.

My heart goes out to all those suffering from depression and/or anxiety..its a nightmare..it is nothing to be ashamed of .you are not alone.. While some people say they got healed with meditation and positive thinking..that is great, but sometimes medication is needed and that’s ok! My friend suffered for a few years.. it was a nightmarish existence.. he tried everything meditation positive thinking exercise eating healthy prayer counseling.. yet it still continued.. as a last resort after trying different meditations.. finally his Dr gave him Effexor extended capsules.. within a few days a slight better feeling then week by week everything was getting better after a few months he was back to his normal self... he stayed on the meditation for a year then little by little he lessened dose until about 2 years later he was off the medication... now 4 years later he’s still fine and here’s where the positive thinking comes in .. he thinks on good things and said if he ever feels like he needs to go back on the medication he has no problem with that! But so far the depression and anxiety has not returned.. What really makes me upset is that people do not understand depression.. sometimes people just can’t help themselves..sometimes it’s a chemical imbalance.. sometimes medication is needed and it’s nothing to be ashamed of at all. I do believe in the power of prayer but if you have a migraine will you just pray it away or will you take an aspirin.. if you have an infection will you pray it away or take an antibiotic.. you see my point.. so just keep in mind .. don’t let anyone shame you by saying your faith is not strong enough or what ever.. if medication is needed seek help.. don’t keep suffering.. and helping others getting busy after you are feeling better.. don’t let yourself get lost in your thoughts if they are not good thoughts.. you can stop them ..

My Mums funeral almost broke me. I could not function throughout other than in my own way. I supported my Nephews and Nieces as best I could and managed to try to help show the young ones that death is natural and always think of the fun and love you share with someone for ever. My older brothers done all the arranging and organizing and at the time I felt bad because I could not function to assist with that side of the process. I had mental issues for some time because of the loss of my mum and maybe how I handled it. Not sure what I am trying to say other than taking part in some way through times, even if you do not act exactly as you would have wanted to, you can still look back and feel like you done something. Ever consider that the high functioning is what is causing the depression? Stress creates cortisol which can affect serotonin levels. Now, this can go unnoticed, as the body creates all sorts of defense mechanisms to mask the problem, but all it takes is one major negative event that was unguarded for, or in which the person loses control, for someone to fall into one and really feel the effects.

That doesn't make sense. High functioning means the person is able to function well despite their disability. If they have depression but are high functioning they can perform daily tasks or their job without their depression affecting them. Similarly you can have highly functioning alcoholics. Some alcoholics are a physical and mental mess but some can drink heavily and yet still work and live a normal life and don't display their drinking problems.

You probably know that lawyers are high functioning. Well they also happen to be some of the most stressed and least happy. Is it any wonder too that a lot of lawyers are alcoholics? Not incidentally, alcohol can destroy cortisol in the body, when used in moderation, which maybe explains why many use it to cope. However, often times it actually makes things worse when abused.

@@bgates275 You are confusing the term. In this context they are highly functioning *despite* their disability. They are just able to function and perform well in life even though they have alcoholism or depression or autism. Here this might clear it up for you, "High functioning mental illness is the term that has been adopted to describe those living with a mental illness that is almost undetectable." You are confusing it with highly performing. youngminds.org.uk/blog/living-with-a-high-functioning-mental-illness/

High functioning is a term used in psychology to describe persons living with a disability or mental illness.someone can have anxiety and be high functioning meaning they can still do Day to day things and may be difficult to identify as having anxiety or they could be into drugs but still functional. What you’re referring to is performance. Hope this helps a bit. - former psych student

I remember listening to this years about 3 years ago before my mother got cancer. Back then I thought it was very useful wisdom before I became her caretaker, but after she got breast cancer and died of it this July, I hear it as a way to walk through life. I was the one that tried to help everyone through the grief. As people cried I would smile and try to help them through it. When people began to bicker around my mother's deathbed I would try to either advert their attention or solve the problem. My mother was in a comatose state and could hear everything. I made sure that she could be confident in me to keep everyone at the least emotionally stable. At the funeral I had to give the eulogy and meet with just about every person that walked in to pay their respects and I did all of it with a smile. I wasn't naive about the situation either and I'm far from being a rock solid person with good and bad days with handling the grief of our loss. Believe me, in a situation as awful, tragic, and hell-like as the death of a beloved family member is, be the useful one at the funeral.

This one struck home for me. When my father informed me he was terminally ill I had the epiphany that I needed to be the strong one that held people together, the pragmatist, the "useful" one. Even on the day he died I was there watching over him and tending to him and doing all I could to help my step-mother as that idea of being the "useful" one was my driving force and all the way through the funeral and dealing with his estate. Many of my family have said how important that was for them and that really reinforced my newfound perspective. To be "the useful person at a funeral". I could also see certain people that used it as an excuse to suck the attention up and gain sympathy they weren't entitled to rather than be there for those that needed support. Now I just need to learn how to be kind enough to myself not to constantly be thinking there was more I should have done even though I did all I could at the time.
