He defined God as "everything that you don't know" on Joe Rogan podcast. But he defines God differently depending on who he is talking to. That rubbed me the wrong way at first as a christian, but then i realized that if the person he's talking to isn't a christian, and doesn't believe in God, he already knows they don't believe, so he defines God in a way they can understand, and a way they can relate to and/or respect. None of his definitions are false, God has many names. "I AM" is a name. I think it's brilliant now, because the conversation miraculously DOESN'T GRIND TO A HALT at that point. he steps over it like a cat steps over a landmine, like it's nothing. I can't get enough of this guy.

You as a Christian should be more humble and less certain of whether or not definitions are correct...if u spent some time thinking as objectively as possible you would realise how little any of us know...that certainty u display is the very archetype of man creating God in his image rather than the other way round,a dangerous ideal, that almost makes sense...u should be both humbled and comfortable in your uncertainty and allow your faith to flourish regardless...that certainty is the reason why we have radicals and fundamentalists in most if not all religions...face it,we don't know shit...and that's ok...

@@qwertymcqwert7066 you are right, and it's troubling. I want to be certain, so I collect all I can, but no matter how much sense it makes, if I 'lean on my own understanding' it always gets me the same result, even if what I'm leaning on is the truth. Was agnostic most of my life but once I understood a fragment of God's word, my life has improved in every facet. Family, relationships even business, I only lament that it took so long, I missed out on too much when I was blind. Fear of the Lord IS the beginning of Wisdom. Even if that wisdom is equivalent to one grain of sand out of all the grains of sand in the world, it is a huge blessing.

Of course when one is accomplished and has three college degrees culminating in a Doctorate as I was, it was a small skip and a jump to wrongly believe in my own accomplishments. @doug5441

Psalm 111:10 indeed says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Also Job 28:28 says: "And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding." Matthew 10:28 is a really good reason to fear God: "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." This fear is not simply an awe of God's awesomeness, but rather a literal dread (Isaiah 8:13), a literal "being afraid", of God. If He can destroy both your body and your soul in Hell, He is so worthy of our fear.

anonymous person , the problem here is that that subjective feeling you're so passionately expressing is purely speculative in and of itself. That's the problem. And it's the problem that's continuously being debated all over the world. Not the fact in which those fortunate enough to experience the passion of the faith in the Holy Spirit subjectively experience, but the fact that no human being can ever be good or high enough to attest any of the speculated validities of God's great existence and power ...

Dr Mona Howard It May be subjective but it also makes sense. Also, god came to be a role model for us, and supposedly died for our sins, so we don’t have to be as good as god to be good Christians, nor should we expect other people to be as powerful as him, assuming God is real.

Used to pride myself in being atheist, before I realized it was nothing to be smug about. You trade one dogma for another, no matter how much you try to scrub that good ol' godhood stain off of your spirit. You can try bleaching it, but then it weakens you so much you might not even realize it. I still don't know about a literal _Higher Entity_ but the psychological archetype (or whatever you might call it) is something I now recognize in a very acute way. There is now not a single outspoken atheist I like. Anyone who makes a point to base themselves in the supposed lack of beliefs is someone I can only view with suspicion. All of my favorite lecturers, professors and public figures are, at the very least, deists. This is something that happened organically. The bitter, resentful people are all shuffling to my left side and -wonders!- the fun people are coming to my right hand. Hindsight is weird, I guess. 15-year-old-me would have thrown a huge fit at the very idea of liking someone like Peterson, if only because he's not an atheist.

Well, that's that weird thing isn't it? My liking this goup of people is _empirical_ data set. The common point is that they're not atheists... So then I wondered why that was. Sometime it happens that I learn that this or that guy is an atheist, but it's always something I had to look into. Maybe the guy posted about it once in an obscure blog back in 2006 or something. It is *NEVER* something they wear on their shoulder. It's almost as if they take no pride in thinking there is no higher being. It's almost as if humility was a virtue.

how is that strange ? people were overwhelmingly theists, so a large proportion of scientists were also theists (less than the % in the population). It is the bottom rung of the ladder - the top is Wisdom ... the order goes like this and they are gifts - you can not learn them, they are given through grace. bottom to top - 1) fear of the Lord 2) Piety, 3) Fortitude 4) Knowledge 5) understanding 6) counsel 7) wisdom.

In my youth, I flew fighters in the U.S. Navy. The consequences of being "on your high horse" or hubris were often instant and catastrophic. There was a saying in the community. "Don't believe your own bullshit!" We all have a degree of hubris and we could strut around with the best of them, but we mostly realized that if you invest too much in that, you could end up in a smoking hole! I'm retired now, but the same attitude also served me well flying in the airlines. It's a good motto for life...don't believe your own bullshit!

When I had my first awakening and realized how blessed I was , eventually my outlook on others turned into “do they even realize what God has given them? I have. I’m aware. I’m better.” What a joke. I thought myself better than the rest because of how much “wisdom” I gained. I was prideful and without realizing it, had fallen. Until the day came that I was shown that my sins don’t just effect me. They effect everyone. Everyone I loved. And that same day I cried and was humbled. I realized God was still with me , watching me, rooting for me. Someone I cast away, was always there for me. What love. What kindness. Thank you God. You’ve touched my heart. Whatever you have planned for me, thank you. Your blessings and mercy, no matter what shape they take, I accept them. Thank you. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

@Nelson Giles Fortunately for us, no, because God offers forgiveness and Grace. BUT! Unfortunately for those who do not accept God's grace, there will be justice for their wrongs, and not only 100%, but 100% times infinite. Without repenting, there's no evading eternal punishment.
@juanitoalcachofa1183

Nelson Giles Obviously not every action is judged in a court, but if someone “gets away with something evil”, then justice will come in different forms. Punishment such as constant emotional torment, like what happens to Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment, or perhaps the action which he takes sets a train of reactions which will bite him in the ass 2 years later, which is what he was referring to in the video. Say you insult someone for the sake of making his day a worse one, and a year later, when applying for a job you desperately need, he turns out to be the interviewer. This isn’t the best example, but similar stuff happen all the time, and justice is not necessarily served right after the action which violates the moral code is committed, but maybe even decades after.

Whether or not an all knowing deity exists is neither here nor there. I do not know if one exists and i care to know even less. All i argue for is the belief of life beyond death and that there is more then what we just see with our own eyes. For if this time on this world is the only chance we have then any act of kindness and sympathy is logically meaningless unless it is for my own personal gain. If what you are saying is true then i should be able to kill you because i feel like it and not get in trouble for it. Your perception of the bible and religion in general is from the perspective of a child, taking it all at face value, the expectation that everything should be perfect, and the idea that humans are just good natured by default. And to make matters worse, you take anyone who is religious, and lump them into the same category as isis and the kkk. Claiming they are the worst of all evil, blatantly ignoring the soviet union, as well as modern day china. Which are not only completely atheists, it demands that their citizens are atheists under pain of death. But i suppose that's just an inconvenience that you just decide to ignore huh? The bible....nay all religious text are only nonsense if you choose to look at them at face value, which in turn proves how short sighted you really are. I suggest you take a look at yourself and get your act together, before you even entertain the thought of criticizing someone else for anything. And if you're like those naturalists, and claim that all we are are physical entities. Then i suggest you watch this and tell me that again. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdSffMljs93Fgo0.html

Ok 1. your entire premise is based on the assumption that we could eventually reprogram people to think and act how we want, which goes against so many different human rights violations its insane. And 2 That is absolutely false, usually when you get brain damage what happens isn't that you become a different person. What happens is you lose the ability to put on masks or put in a public facade for others. All brain damage does is reveal you for what you really are. It doesn't turn you into an completely different person. Also could you please do a little better then regurgitate Hitchens and Dawkins like their word is absolute truth? But i suppose you are right about one thing, atheism isn't what i have an issue with. It's Scientism. The idea that Science is the only path to truth, philosophy is dead, and only 10% of the world population is actually intelligent. Honestly maybe you could get your message across if you didn't combine keep telling people how utterly meaningless they are in the world. Cause then all that's left is to satisfy ones carnal desires, live a life of emptiness and then disappear into the void. Besides what happens to those who live in 3rd world, war torn countries who struggle every day just to survive? What? Sucks to be them? This is why i hate naturalist atheists, because of how out of touch with everyone else they are. Everyone just rots in the ground and ceases to be when they die and if they don't live in a first world country well tough shit. Seriously the way you talk you almost come off as saying that modern day china is an ideal society.

'I have never in all my years seen anyone get away with anything'. Good lord, that line just hit me like a ton of bricks. I see how unhappy and bereft I am, and I think to myself, 'why am I cursed, why has God or the Universe of whatever condemned me to this misery?' But then I look back and think to myself of all the times I was weak, all the times I lied to myself, all the times I allowed myself to shrink within my shell, all the times I allowed myself to rest on my laurels and not move forwards. This is entirely a bed of my own making, and the worst thing is I can see exactly where it could lead in the future. And try as I might to allow this 'fear of god' to motivate me to push forwards, all it seems to do is lead me further and further into despair. Piano Slayer , the saying means you can possess all those values without having to fear God but doing that means you have only those values and everything else the world and yourself can give you. But, and it's a big BUT, if you don't fear God then those values or anything of this world and of yourself ends in just that - "knowledge". Knowledge of those values/things/yourself. Wisdom, however, comes only when truly fearing God begins within you ...

I agree mostly with what Jordan said but just thought I would include more of the Scripture verse that is mentioned for a clearer picture of Who God is and what He thinks of us. Psalm 103:1-18 Psalm 103 Of David. 1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits- 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: 8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 15 The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; 16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. 17 But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children- 18 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

Professor Peterson has done a simple, yet incredibly amazing job by intriguing his listeners to seek out God. He understands that the way to minimize the pains of consciousness is by developing a healthy relationship with our creator. In which the person obeys the will of God and diminishes the chances of acting in a narcissistic self-destructive manner.

How do you believe in the Creator, when the Creator already existed before your beliefs? Science looks for Empirical Evidence. The only things is, we live in Empirical Evidence. A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent upon arriving. A good artist lets his intuition lead him wherever it wants. A good scientist has freed himself of concepts and keeps his mind open to what is. Thus the Master is available to all people and doesn't reject anyone. He is ready to use all situations and doesn't waste anything. This is called embodying the light. What is a good man but a bad man's teacher? What is a bad man but a good man's job? A girl cheats on a guy that loved her then breaks up with him to cover up what she did. 2 years later that girl has gone mentally insane and is unlovable emotional wreck because she got used and cheated on by the guy she left him for . I've literally seen this happen . This is an example of never getting away with it .. Mr Peterson has logically stumbled across this in his line of work . And it's made him realise the fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom . But the end is receiving the Holy Ghost and being sealed into the kingdom (Ephesians 4v30)(*AT THIS POINT YOU'RE NO LONGER A SINNER*) Mr Peterson is at the beginning and that's his veiwpoint he is explaining here. *Grace* However for those trying to understand Grace , sin is unbelief . As in not believing Jesus Christ died for your sins. When God sees that you do believe he gives you the Holy Ghost and dwells in you . You become a sinner saved by grace. You will still sin ( mistakes) but the blood of Jesus Christ attones for that sin . Hence why the bible says he that is born of God cannot sin. To be saved you must accept in your heart that Jesus Christ came down on earth walked , lived , eat here on thus very earth . And died for your sins. And his blood is the atonement God sees for your sins.

I’ve experienced this! I met my first girlfriend when I was 16 and we split when I was 21, long story short I worked very hard for things to work out. After I had sent her a long paragraph it turned out that she wasn’t taking the time to think, she already had another boyfriend. I got upset and this is what happened. She laughed at me, she told me that he is so perfect and that he is 100 times better than me, that he had changed her so much for the better, how he takes her out and buys her things, and that she didn’t think about me and wished she ended our relationship much earlier (I ended it but changed my mind). I was very upset and suicidal and for the first time in my life I pleaded to Jesus, I then blocked her on everything. She messaged me a few weeks later asking me if I had changed my number, I knew things went wrong and I ignored her. I spoke to her again a month later because I owed her money and then we spoke about what happened and she told me that he cheated on her and laughed about it as if she was nothing, the difference here was that I didn’t laugh at her like she laughed at me when I cried over her, and it really came back to bite her and told me that it was killing her. I’ve seen this with other people too. Jesus completely changed my life.

God shows us who he is in some shapes and forms. Many call him “Heavenly Father”,which is a good example of fear and love working together (ie. kids fearing but loving their loving parents at same time). Generally speaking...Kids aren’t forced to love or even listen to their dad, but it doesn’t go well for them if they don’t. No one is forced to love or accept God, and that’s what hell is as I understand it. Hell is basically one’s option to say “I don’t want anything to do with you”. Hope this rant helps you.

I hear you. I just think if one really took a look in the Bible at what Jesus is about, it’s not about a bunch of rules and commands. People asked him for rules in bible to put Jesus in a box, but He was pretty vague bc it’s not really about the rules, but the heart (priorities, desires, values). He actually seems to only aggressively oppose “religious” people (that claim to know everything, but got it wrong) and is super patient and kind with the “sinners” (ie. prostitute, adulterer, tax collectors, non-religious folk). Just hope u don’t let “religion” get in the way of you being open to God. Jesus didn’t like it when religious church folk got things twisted also. We probably have a lot more in common with Jesus in that respect than we think. I think God is pretty patient about letting people make bad choices but hoping they make the right one. I am "born again" and am surprised how close to Christian teaching this is. Mr Peterson has my respect but of course. The difference I could bring up is that when he calls something a mistake it is called a sin in the Bible. Sin and mistake are not the same. Christ died for those sins and it had to be that way. You can only change some things ...only God has can make the big changes.

I'm amused and intrigued by how many Christians are attracted to Jordan Peterson's teaching, when his approach is really far closer to Jewish Orthodoxy than New Testament Christianity. I think the main reason is because secular humanism, propping up science as its Fountainhead of 'knowledge', has attempted to completely throw overboard the idea of universal morality, and is encountering the consequences.

What Jordan says here is the truth. I'm almost 40 years old, and listen to me young pals, I've seen some dozens of people (including myself) try to twist things and they just break themselves against the rock. It's no game, no game... Flow with it, and you'll be just fine (and even more than fine if you're wise enough).

It's good to hear a grown man say he's terrified of God. Now, I know Dr. Peterson knows God is Love and that God wants us to "fear" Him in an attitude of reverence for who He is. But I love the way he takes a stern tone and warns us about crossing the line into disobedience. It's funny when you see God's wrath on someone else, but it's not funny when His wrath is on you. I should know: I've crossed that line enough times to know I can't get away with anything. And I've lived long enough to know that no one else gets away with anything either. Nevertheless, it's not our "toeing the line" that saves us. We are supposed to do that and we transgress often. It's that God's Son toed the line perfectly and we are accepted because of Him. Nuf said.

Such an interesting perspective. As one who has called himself an atheist, I have been seeking guidance and wisdom from many different sources, mostly those who have been respected by many (representations of human ideals). Perhaps there is a universal moral law, and perhaps it is expressed by the Bible not only through the Ten Commandments but also through the OTs (in particular) narrative. What I love so much about this clip is "the fear of god is the beginning of wisdom." The reason I love It so much is that it is an expression of the reality that there is at least that which appears to be a being in the sky which looks upon being itself and judges it’s every move on the basis of the law it set. It reinforces the idea that in order to live with wisdom and to ultimately become a sage one must fear that any decision which is against the ideal behavior (established by society) will come back to haunt them, whether or not the consequence is experienced directly.

It’s helpful to understand the solid meaning behind the term “Fear of God” In it’s best state, you see that it’s not necessarily a fear born out of trying to simply avoid some form of devine punishment. It’s more like being mindful of, or respecting God. The old term “A God fearing man” simply means: A person who acknowledges and respects the idea of a moral lawgiver, and has decided to align actions and behaviour with (non-subjective) moral law. Hahaha! It all starts with “cleaning your damn room!”

Modern society has lost the concept of God as an all powerful lawgiver. As a result it degenerates. We need the idea of God if my understanding of Peterson is correct as an antidote to chaos.Modern liberal rationalism simply doesn't work very well..

"In all my years as a clinical psychologist, I have never seen anyone ever get away with anything at all, even once. Someone twists the fabric of reality and it doesn't snap back at them that moment and then two years later something unravels and they get walloped". Now that's karma he is taking about. He is essentially claiming karma to be a real phenomenon. What goes around comes around. So are these physical laws that apply to everyone regardless of their belief system? I know of people who live the most moralistic lives and still get walloped. What about them? The same act can be considered moralistic in one culture and immoral in another. Idol worship, polygamy and even murder can vary between being the most moralistic act or the biggest transgression depending on you religion, culture, upbringing etc. The problem here is, his statement is based on "his experience as a clinical psychologist" i.e. his interactions with people having psychological issues. (Why would someone visit a clinical psychologist if he had no psychological issues?) It could be that the religious and moralistic conditioning of his subjects were very strong and very deeply rooted in their minds. Perhaps that in itself is the root cause of their problems. I don’t think Jordan Peterson has studied too many people who have gotten away with so called wrong actions. How could he? They would not go to him seeking help. Why would they? But, to make a definitive statement like that, he would have to study such people and that is almost impossible because people who have done something wrong and gotten away with it would keep it to themselves. They wouldn't come out and confess to a Psychologist just for the sake of research. Secondly, what would be the reference to judge a good act, bad act, good result, bad result? The subject's belief system or Jordan Peterson's? I think it was slightly irresponsible on the part of Jordan Peterson to make such a strong statement simply based on "his experience as a clinical psychologist". I think Freud did the same thing. I don't know much about this but I've heard that most of his ideas were based on his interactions with people who had mental issues. I don't think he really studied too many healthy minds.
