Hey polymaths. Today we're watching the transformation of Jordan Peterson from an empathetic clinical psychologist to a raving sensationalizing sell-out. I used to very much enjoy Peterson's lectures, but it seems that now he's given in to political media in the pursuit of attention, contracts, and book sales. :O

Hey all, just wanna say my recent political commentary has been somewhat of an experiment, I don't want to come off as a "Gotcha reporter" or anything, I just want to share opinions. Peterson really sparked my interest in psychology 8 years ago with his Toronto lectures so these kinds of instances really hit me in the heart. I appreciate your understanding. Further videos will focus more on my own examinations of philosophy of psychology.

3:14 Yes! :) I am not a Peterson fan boy but I think he is using "psychopath" to describe the opposite of what you are saying he is :) I don't think he is talking about clinical psychopathy. I helped start Habitat for Humanity in our town and also worked with homeless in the early 80's with an inner city adopt a block program and it is true that some people chose the transient life style. I also run into this in the construction business where people want to work for a few weeks to make some change then go back to the streets. Also, the left are the ones who want to defund the police and the right have historically been the compassionate ones due to local churches and other non-profits helping the community. The left thinks government should do this task which it has shown to be a failure with. So it's a deep subject that requires understanding on both sides. This would be a good topic to do a PiFi show on :)

I'm down. And yea, that's what Im saying, he should be remembering the clinical origins of the term psychopathy, but he's abandoned his psychological pursuits for this narrative and is now using the term as an insult, in a derogatory form

His descent into anger and confusion has been so painful to watch. For a while he was helping a lot of people, myself among them. Looking back, he was always fragile. When he felt he was in control, he was fine. But he was never as coherent as he sounded, and he was never evidence based (at all). So I don't expect him to have a pulse on problems as complex as homelessness and community mental health. I honestly think the fame, mixed with sycophantic support from the alt-right have really broken him down, reducing him to a nexus of fear, hatred, and judgement. It really is heart breaking. In the same way as watching Kanye's decent into delusion...

So, are you not considering that the national Institute of health reported that violent crimes are 40 times higher in the homeless population? In the legal system, homeless defendants have hold a significant representation of victimizing strangers. We like "mentally ill" now but psychopathy is literally defined as a mental illness or disorder according to Oxford dictionary. I think you're really reaching to suggest that Peterson believes compassion shouldn't be practiced. Hyper compassion can be a danger to both communities and the individual. We seem to understand and accept this in terms of abusive and gas lighting relationships. Why is it too painful to assume that this also exists at a community level? Well, actually, I suppose we do accept some of this at a community level should the demographic that is victimized is perceived as the social proletariat in the situation such as POC, homeless, LGBTQA +, etc. If they fall under the umbrella of intersectional theories then people become more than willing to accept the abuse of a community. God for bid we ever acknowledge that the "underdog" is plenty capable of harming a community as well and statistically does so more often. You also seem to be characterizing Bronfenbrenner's ecological system as the predestination of God if you will. Ecological systems theory is only a framework for understanding how childhood COULD shape an individual but never outright removes the individual's choice from the equation. Within the framework itself, microsystem and mesosystem maintain the largest amount of influence. The Chronosystem is the one with the least amount of influence and is the most outer ring. This means that environmental changes(Homelessness), socioeconomic status, historical events, etc. have the least amount of influence on a person. And even if they did have such a powerful influence that the individual is just beyond self-control, what is the community supposed to do about it? Are we to allow vast tent cities, full of crime and mental illness, to run amok? I reiterate that it is an absolute blatant mischaracterization that Jordan Peterson ignores people who struggle with psychopathy. He specifically addressing people and politicians who just want to keep these tent cities up without changing anything, all for the sake of "compassion." The fact that you see it the way that you do is a testament to the point that people are attempting to control the terms. And I agree that it's on both sides as you say. You seem quite intelligent and, therefore, above such thinking which is why I believe you made a simple mistake here with this strawman of Dr. Peterson's point.

Oh, thanks for the detailed response! Yes, most of my work focuses on cognitive science, evolution and behavioral psychology, but I try to keep a nuanced approach to politics. The issue I take with Peterson is political, and it shouldn't be, because he's a psychologist. I've watched his career moves over the years and I've been disappointed to see him selling out to preach a narrative like this instead of prioritizing empathy as a good psychologist should, and I suppose that's my main motive for making this video. I learned so much from his Toronto lectures and have taken in probably 40+ hours of his educational content, and seeing him make fun of the kind of students he used to teach is just disappointing. "Oh the poor thugs..." A psychologist doesn't talk like that. "If they gain the "linguistic territory" they *win*" presents an us-vs-them mentality, and so on. Certainly, PC culture presents big problems and I'm writing a book on that currently, but I'm doing so with nuance, not this blatant biased approach. Also just wanted to mention the chronosystem is actually depicted as running throughout all of the rings, describing how all of these uncountable factors change over time. It does suck behavioral psychology using these models can fall under the category of pure determinism, but unfortunately, it does seem that free will, agency, and introspective capacities are very lacking in the States. Peterson falls for the typical conservative assumption of bootstrap-pulling, that everyone can suddenly not become "poor thugs" and instantly lose their psychopathy, which also goes against his psychology training. But yes, the subject is complex and I'll probably change my mind on all this in a week again xD

@@polymathpark Well, I first have to express that I greatly appreciate your willingness to have a conversation as I know that these are sensitive topics for a lot of people. I have to commend you for keeping it intellectual over emotional. 🙂 I know that Dr. Peterson has indeed become more conservative over the years but there are two situations that have occurred where such changes are actually quite natural. The first is simply that he is moving from middle age into elderly. It's quite common for people to become more conservative with age and experience. The baby boomer generation was the hippie generation in the 60s and 70s and they are almost unilaterally conservative now. The second reason he has become more and more conservative is the same reason Joe Rogan has. He refused to obey the totalitarian mandates that the Canadian government attempted to impose with Bill C16. For opposing compelled speech, he was labeled far right, bigoted, Nazi, and accused of being responsible for the deaths of transgendered children. Not any specific transgendered children, mind you, but some theoretical group of transgendered children that exists somewhere in the ether who are destined to commit suicide if Dr. Peterson refuses to bow to their mandates. When someone labels you a dangerous enemy, the psychology of human survival mandates that you find allies if you want to eat. Public shame and exile is very scary for humans because historically, that sentence was death. While I understand your appeal to empathy, you don't seem to have much when it specifically relates to why Jordan Peterson would find allies with the right wing. I would also clarify that his right wing allies are of the variety that publicly and instantly denounces racism, sexism, and any other ideology that would prohibit an individual from generating fiscal and intellectual capital. I believe the most dangerous assumption you're making is that the conservative approach isn't the empathetic stance. Or rather, that one who adopts a conservative stance can't do so out of empathy. You say he preaches a narrative over empathy but it's been my experience that the narrative he preaches is steeped in empathy. Suicide rates are higher than ever! Loneliness is more prevalent for everyone but specifically young men. Nihilism has replaced faith. And our society fights harder for criminals than it does for the common man. All of these issues are issues that shake Dr. Peterson to such an extent that it brings him to tears for the pain people have suffered under such circumstances. I am nowhere near the accolades of Jordan Peterson but I am also a psychologist and sociologist, with a minor in communication studies. It's disheartening at how common it is to hear that psychologists are not supposed to speak in more conservative tones or with more conservative principles. The vast majority of clients I have seen are just common people who believe that no one cares for them. They believe that may be people would pay more attention if they were gay or black or suicidal. Unfortunately, suicidal is the one thing that many clients believe they can actually achieve to get the attention they're pining for. They tell me how they are told that men should be allowed to show emotion in this current day but every time they try to express being left behind, they're called out for white and male fragility. It's honestly sad. Yes, the chronosystem is strewn throughout but there is some intersection between all the systems. I personally reject the idea of how deterministic the system can really be since history has witnessed people from the bottom of the barrel becoming quite successful and stable and people with everything to their name losing it all. Even if it's true though, you now find yourself in a Catch-22. You call out the conservative bias of Dr. Peterson when really, he is just a product of his experiences. Of course, this would make you and your spiritual and compassionate biases a product of your experiences and not directly linked to your own virtue. You see the issue with such a theory? We are no longer able to reasonably call people out for anything! This makes your entire video about Jordan Peterson a moot point since it's really not his fault anyway. I still very much appreciate Bronfenbrenner's work but I understand it as a framework for why people have a tendency towards certain choices and not strictly a deterministic gospel. I will admit, discussing this with you has been a delight and I hope we continue to do so! I too am also excited to change my mind many times throughout my life and maybe you are the catalyst for which I am to do so. 🙂

@@jordanpease3329 that's how I view the bioecological system as well, it's not set in stone. Of course both sides of the political spectrum can exercise care and empathy, but when one conducts oneself with such vitriol and literal mockery in the way that children do on the playground, it begins to become obvious as to their intentions. Everyone needs to just suck it up and suddenly become aware of all the resources at their disposal for self improvement, which commits the false equivalence fallacy. Working with clients I'm sure you've see variation in people's need to be actually taught the power they have to overcome such desire for attention instead of it simply happening upon them. I think this is where the limitations of free will and self awareness come in, and both sides make big assptions as to how much someone has. As for me, I had to be taught all of this externally in my late 20s /:

@@polymathpark Hey, I'm glad we agree on that. The consequences of complete determinism are two stark to believe in completely. I appreciate the admission that both sides of the political aisle can display empathy and even in a therapeutic sense. It's actually extremely to hear someone who was more on the "liberal" (for lack of a better word) side of the spectrum make such an admission. What's interesting is I actually had opposite experience as you in my late 20s. I have a very severe physical disability that requires me to walk on crutches, have others help me with toileting, and others help me with dressing. In college, I was taught to believe that there were simply too many systems in my way and that I was a victim of societies oppression of me. I bought into it, hook, line, and sinker. I won't bore you with the details but to use your terminology, I found my bootstraps! After four years of joblessness and feeling worthless, I decided to tug on them rather it made a difference or not. I honestly believed that it wouldn't make a difference but had ultimately decided that I would not go quietly into the night! Now, even with my physical condition, I am supporting a family of four. Yes, I had to work harder to get where I am than most people. Yes, it's not fair. But they told me I couldn't and that it wouldn't be my fault… THEY WERE WRONG! (Capitals are for emphasis, not yelling.) My experience is anecdotal to be sure but I'm not the only one to overcome the supposed "insurmountable odds" of our "corrupt" society. It can be frustrating and disheartening when people blame everything about themselves for all of their issues. Yes, I have a disability, but my disability as a point made me stop fighting. Yes, I was told in college that the fight was frivolous by bad actors with a socialist agenda, but they aren't the ones that made me stop fighting either. I gave up and I want people to know that they don't need to give up. There is a certain amount of justified vitriol for the bad actors that teach such abominable doctrine to those susceptible to believing it. There's a certain amount of justified vitriol towards people who exercise violence against others no matter what mental illness they may have. A friend of mine in the field works directly with child sex offenders. They are often emulating abuse that was done on them. It's an EXTREMELY tragic situation. However, the first thing we teach them is accountability. We offer grace by letting them know that we understand why they did what they did, but we make sure that they understand that it's no one's fault but their own. Those that accept this flourish and often graduate. Those that do not always end up back in the court system where they end up in juvenile detention. Empathy is a tool like a hammer. You can use it to build something beautiful but you can also bash someone over the head with it, crippling them for life. We have far too much in the way of excessive, crippling empathy in my opinion. No matter your opinions and our disagreements, you are an absolute gentleman! I would say you've earned my subscription my friend!

380 viewers for a reason. You have the wrong opinion for the masses. You are welcome to have your opinion. But Dr. Peterson is saying you have control over your own life. You can choose to mold yourself into the hero of the story. And its not easy to do. But you can. So if you are homeless. You can choose to sell yourself to a profession, you have literally all the time in the world to learn anything. You can choose to be better every day a little bit at a time. So it is a choice to be homeless. You are choosing laziness or addiction, over self betterment, and rehabilitation.

InB4 you don't know what it's like to be homeless. I was homeless at 19 after getting kicked out of my dad's house after getting kicked out of my mother's house. I came from a broken home and had to pull myself up out of my addictions and vices. And get to work. So if that's the answer for me and that's the answer for everyone else. Then you arent special, and you have to play your part in the world of men, or the world of men will cast you aside, because you are slowing down progress. -How the world works by Bo Burnham plays in the background-

The difference is the puppet slanders mankind, but mankind works the puppet. Its a play on logic, so yes the puppet slanders mankind in the song, and what happens, the puppets told to shut up, and behave. What your missing from this argument, I feel, is that Dr. Jordan Peterson has studied all the books, been awarded all the status, and even if it is stripped from him, it was acknowledged that he was capable of practicing in his respective fields, both as a professor and psychologist. So to discredit all of that triumph, cause he said mean tings you didn't want to hear. You are jumping to a conclusions, hand-fed to you by the main stream media, that is fueling cancel culture. And I don't care to listen to your jibber-jabber. Because one you arent accredited to speak on the topic, so the best you can offer is an opinion, which every one has, and it's an opinion you are trying to build on a foundation of clips you took out of context intentionally to drive a false narrative. So keep your opinions to yourself if you dont want to hear a logical rebuttal to your argument.
