"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

"Remember when pride was a sin?", he says in the most prideful way possible. His display of pride, by the way, is the type referred to in the Biblical passage he brings up. The 'pride' of accepting who you are is not. So, he even doesn't even understand his quote was hypocritical _and_ didn't apply to who he was criticizing. Pure projection. The sheer magnitude of his obtuseness, lack of self awareness, and plain spiteful hatred was mask-off for all to see. That's what JP is.

But the media already did reduce Elliot Page to a proxy in a culture war. They put her on the cover of their magazines showing off the results of her surgery, and publicly praising her (the same media that said Adele was fatshaming for publicly losing weight - Adele didn't have her weight loss from having bits of her body surgically removed!). It wasn't like it was a private thing, and the media used her to promote the decision and to imply it was the right decision, so she was already being used by the media. It wasn't between her and her cosmetic surgeon; it was between her, her pr team and the rest of the world. Why is this any different from any other celebrity decision made public? If a celebrity gets married the public voice their opinion; if they change their hair the public voice their opinion; if they pose nude the public express an opinion; if they express an opinion the public express an opinion about their opinion; and why not? All these things were done publicly.

the thing with Peterson is that he actually does say some interesting and useful things, especially as it relates to self improvement and mental health and especially for young men who are lost, and various other things that relates to his psychology expertise. However it becomes a problem when he throws in religion, social conservatism and politics into it, and then never really elaborates properly when someone questions him and pushes back on stuff he's said (or tried to say). He'll say 'you should work on yourself' and then add 'which is why we shouldn't really do much with climate change on a societal level at all and something about dragons and demonic forces'.

As I’ve mentioned before I’m a 68yo trans woman. How anyone thinks this will become a fad is so far beyond me that I would believe trump won before I’d believe that. The pain I endured for so many years trying to fight who I was I would not wish on anyone. That does not even account for the ridicule I have felt from society at large. Fortunately, or unfortunately since there is no way I could easily “pass” I’m fairly good sized and grew up in rural Texas and learned how to take care of myself. Because of that and I’d like to think my personality I have not ever experienced the violence that others have endured. Getting that out of the way, after listening to Russel’s interview and yours I strongly get the feeling Jordan has some strong insecurities about his own sexuality/gender. For someone touted as a smart man his position seems inconsistent with itself. I have spent many years with psychologist, psychiatrist, sociologist and they are an overall a wacky bunch with deep issues themselves. My first major was psychology, hoping to figure out myself before settling on degree nursing. I have long ago came to the realization that since I couldn’t seem to help myself I got my satisfaction from helping others. Anyway, I’m starting to bore myself. Thanks again for highlighting this issue. We have taken mammoth steps backwards in society’s acceptance of trans issues. This is not a fad or an illness, this is who we are. Mercifully I do feel despite the propagation of hate we are still inching forward.

Being bisexual I have met many other bisexual people who identified as straight first or were socially pushed to say they were gay, only for them to accept that they were bisexual years later. Many decided to call themselves gay rather than endure abuse from gay and straight people. This anecdote is to say social pressures do push people to falsely identify, and although most of the trans people I have met are happy with their decision, I have met two who have de-transitioned. And I agree, a lot of hate the trans community receives comes from those who have fragile male or female identities, but that does not mean they are trans. Gender identities are often fragile if they are built on mere inauthentic social expectations and rules of what male or female should be. I support anyone who transitions, even if I don’t understand the decision, life is hard enough. But I still believe in an older psychoanalytic model of discouraging surgery, non-foreclosure of identity, and simply encouraging and affirming gender non-conformity. But bisexual people conforming to gay or straight does not result in an irreversible decision, surgical transition does. And it took really 40 years for bisexual people to get loader than gay activists who routinely erased us. I fear the same may happen with the trans community and the nuances and diversity there in.

Russel’s point seems to be, he does the exact same thing those people do. If he saw a trans person walking down the street, would he run up to him and say “Whoever cut your breasts cut off is a criminal!”… No he would not. If he saw a heavy set person at the grocery store, would he walk up to them and say “You’re NOT beautiful!”. Of course not. So how is Jordan any different than the demon trolls?

Define “non”. I mean, in context, it might mean “without”, but without what? And then you have to ask yourself: “are we using ‘what’ as a pejorative?” To somebody else, “non” can be a connotation, and in that sense, we might be misconstruing the intent of the way the user meant it to be understood. We all have to agree on a definition of “non” before we try to facilitate our point, or else the whole world will be upside down and we will be asking ourselves “in what kind of situation is a ‘non-what’ acceptable, and how do we conceptualize the images and meanings that are derived from our understanding of obscure terminology in our post-modern lexicon?

In part that is the form of communication. There's not going to be much nuance in a conversation that is open to everyone and everyone is limited to a maximum of three sentences whenever they want to express an idea. And no one is reading each others faces or tones of voice and the seeking of herd approval is incentivised. One of the great paradoxes of the 21st century is so many of us use the Internet to say we must get off the internet; much like when I was a kid, the kids TV show "Why Don't You?" advised viewers to stop watching TV! But it's true; we do need to have more conversations with real people in the real world; not just friends and relatives but strangers too. And the easier it becomes not to the more urgent it is that we make a conscious effort to do so.

Kyle, the issue with Peterson's comment regarding Page went right over your head. It was not simply tone or lack of compassion that was the problem. Peterson equated Page's desire to have the surgery and live as the person he felt himself to be to sinning. What he considers a sin is simply Elliot Page trying to live his best life. Peterson reducing that down to the superficiality of pride shows his ignorance of the psychological needs of the trans community.

@@mookiestewart3776 Children are having these surgeries and hormone therapy. You can follow some of them on you tube. I agree that they may have received parental approval, but ultimately the parent is bowing to the wishes of the child right? I can't imagine a situation where a parent would up and decide to transition a child against their will. So ultimately, the child decided, then all the "responsible" adults accepted the child's decision. Sometimes love means saying no. Children are easily led and influenced by others which is why they are supposed to be protected. There is actual evidence of a social contagion element at play here especially among young girls who in some cases have entire friend groups transitioning together. I don't pretend to understand or have all of the answers, but based on everything I've seen, I'm extremely skeptical of the claims that transitioning fixes everything. There are many examples of brave detransitioners who are speaking out all the time about how crushed they are at the permanent changes that transitioning left to their bodies. This should not be dismissed. Benjamin Boyce has numerous interviews on his KZfaq channel with folks who are suffering BECAUSE they transitioned. So in my opinion we need to slow down and reassess what we are doing. I'm not saying transition doesn't help anyone, clearly it can. I just think those decisions should wait until adulthood.

He acknowledges that many young women experience negative feelings due to body image issues and he goes on to say the Elliot Page is a victimizer of young women because he is promoting the fact that he has changed his body to align with the way he feels. But isn’t Peterson also the guy that tweeted discuss for the fact that Sports Illustrated used a plus sized model for their swimsuit cover? What does he not count himself and all the other people in the media that are promoting unrealistic body expectations? Not to mention, Elliot Page was not a girl that didn’t like her body because it didn’t align with the media’s unreasonable expectations, he wanted to change his body because it didn’t align with his gender. Girls that are comfortable with their gender but not comfortable with their bodies are not going to change their gender because they saw Elliot Page on a magazine cover. I think if you asked him directly, if he didnt give you word salad, and answered honestly, he would say he thinks that the trans uptick in culture influences people to follow it, and I guess he thinks that will have an impact on our society. Trans issues are VERY new for most people. This movement was practically non existent for most people before 2016, and it’s understandable that a lot of people have a lot of questions or concerns. Hormone therapies, surgeries are non existent with people coming out of the closet as gay. There weren’t the issues of pronouns, bathroom issues, the possibility that young women might be a disadvantage in sports, etc. I’ve certainly learned and evolved since then - but it has more to do with coming across trans women in the media who are passing/feminine/beautiful. I know some people think that sounds bad that I only evolved because I came across trans women that are passing and attractive to me - but that’s how it happened. I evolved from childhood 1980s homophobia to be more accepting because I’m a music fan, and had mad respect for the gay British pop stars that I grew up listening to. Though to be fair Kyle you do a good job debunking right wing talking points in a calm and non judgmental way. Folks like Cenk Uygur and Sam Seder put down and insult anyone who is not up to date on these issues. And yes . . . Peterson has lost me. A statustic that comes from a time when you had to spend a year living as your chosen sex and undergo counselling before any medical intervention could occur, so misdiagnoses were weeded out. Just the kind of precautions that TRAs call "gatekeeping" and want to get rid of. From a time before the decision was being popularised by influencers on Internet channels and before the "genderbread man" model was being taught in schools. I know a young person who has now chosen to be gender fluid and asks to be referred to by the pronouns they/them and a year earlier she wished she was fat; whilst her brother wished he was black (because black men are less sexist, he believed. I said "are you kidding? Do you know how much feminist outrage there has been over hip hop videos like almost every year? Where do you get this impression from?" Because sites like Jezebel specifcally refer to their enemy as "cis heterosexual white men" so everybody wants to opt out of as many of those adjectives as possible!). Those stats are from a different culture; when trans was not on the menu of opt outs from oppressor class: and the easiest opt out. You can't change your sexual preference without great discomfort, you certainly can't change your race (although some people are ambiguous enough to be able to choose if they have a mixed ancestor - but if you look white no one is going to buy it if you say "well my great grandfather was black"; in the same way that I can't claim I'm Irish because people would say 'in what sense are you Irish; you weren't born in Ireland, you've never stepped foot in Ireland, you don't have an Irish accent, you couldn't even pronounce any "R"s let alone a rhotic one until you were 40! You don't even look particularly Irish; you're English and wearing a celtic knot, drinking Caffreys and listening to the Watervoys isn't going to change that!" and really unless someone decides to hold me responsible for the potato famine it doesn't matter which I am, does it? It is true that I went through a phase of really being into Irish culture because I wanted some sort of cultural heritage - which is such an American thing to do - oh my god, what if I'm actually American?!? No... no it's fine: I can spell colour and theatre properly. I think I'm okay! Phew, that was a scary moment there!.~ Crisis averted), you can't change your biological sex but changing your professed gender identity is quite easy - the surgery and medication you might be putting yourself on track for isn't easy at all, but pre intervention it is just an identity and an identity can be changed just by thinking about it. In a lifetime we may change identity many times, which is why it is not a good idea to make permanent changes to your body based on an identity.

@@charisma-hornum-fries I can't link it on KZfaq as they take down comments with links... sadly KZfaq values profit more than discussion. That being said, it's pretty well known that rates of desistance are 60-95% among youth. If you want to exclude them and only look at adults, then you can (perhaps) get a fabricated number like 1-8%. But being real, most of the controversy on this issue surrounds children, so it's pretty screwed up to advocate that kids should be able to start or fully transition on one hand and then exclude them and quote the 1-2% figure which excludes non adults.

I don't think the argument is active conversion of youth with trans people on magazine covers. It's that public praise of trans people can have an influence on an already confused pre/adolescent girl who is trying to make sense of what she is feeling. And it can amplify the confusion. Especially in a context where parents are told to immediately affirm trans identity under threat of a suicide if not giving complete affirmation. It's an unhelpful dynamic for youth and parents, given that it's not just social acceptance, but medical interventions with harms and irreversible effects. And *some* people talking out about regrets around surgeries, hormones etc. My point being, I don't think it's like the acceptance of a gay/lesbian child. In fact I think *in some cases* having a trans child helps to ignore having a gay child... Kids feeling more comfortable being trans rather than gay.

I agree a lot with what Jordan Peterson has to say. But Elliot Page did nothing wrong. He still wants a career in the public eye as far as I can tell. It is not as though he had said "I recommend mastectomies for children suffering from gender dysphoria."

Where are all the suicides from the past? Suicide rates seem more correlated with acceptance of dysphoria than with rates of dysphoria, unless you want to argue people didn't use to have it. Defending this nonsense is a sign of losing the plot.

Peterson always does this with people he knows aren’t in the medical or psychological profession, “What do you mean ‘feels like’”? I would love to see him debate you AND an expert doctor or psychiatrist/psychologist on this issue. I doubt he would be up for it. He uses his weird angry emphasis on certain words, “You’re WRONG, NO!” and breaks down an opponent’s perfectly good points to the ridiculous minutia of “what words mean”. He’s a charlatan.
