I have my own company now and when I was just getting started I used to dress up in suits all the time before I realized it doesn't matter at all. Now I get kinda annoyed by people that wear full suit to non important meetings. They are posers wanting to be someone they're not. You're not fooling anyone by looks alone, sooner or later, your competence and intelligence is what ultimately matters.

@@frankstallone3864 Why does my comment upset you so much ? Are you someone who has been fooled into thinking that dressing UP (somewhat inappropriately) will somehow get you somewhere special in life, even though you don’t have the skills or aptitude to match the image you are trying to project ? OR are you someone who treats people based on how they dress, and have been stung because it turns out the most important person in the establishment wasn’t interested in superficial displays of clothing and you embarrassed yourself by treating them poorly ?

@@Nah-ah I think it's not only an issue with pickup artists. For example, I oftentimes see young business administration students running around with suits. They tend to be perceived as very competent by everyone, not just women, but when you actually observe them or interact with them it seems like all they have going for them is superficial charisma and some narcissistic traits. It's clearly just a facade to elevate their status but it devalues the suit as a symbol of competence as a whole when every incompetent guy can wear it, especially if that person doesn't have any real goal of improving their competence to fit the attire to begin with. I think the suit deserves too much respect as for a mere student to wear in most settings, at least in the organizational or academic setting.

Dressing smartly is an intelligent way of putting your best foot forward to honestly seek a mate
@coreylevesque4919
@coreylevesque4919 Жыл бұрын
EDIT: Basic personal hygeine is *NOT* "Dressing up". To "dress up" (in the context of the video you should have watched before commenting) is to dress in a way that is false. Signaling competence (wealth) that a person does *not* have /has *not* earned in order to attract someone. I did, and still do not feel that this was a particularly honest way to attract someone, as they would presumably be irritated with the deception. No idea why people replying to me are making this out to be about basic personal hygiene and grooming, but that's the internet for you. Original comment: Is it? Sounds like going out of your way to 'dress to impress' is the opposite of honest. Sounds like we should be focusing on *who* a person is, not what they wear. Seems like following the advice of a "pickup artist" may not be the best way to 'honestly seek a mate'. But that was my takeaway.

Just dressing up a bit, looking clean, coordinated and well fitted is what anyone can do. And to your comment about focusing on “the person” is valid only if you practice that yourself. Applying that kind of judgement broadly on others and assigning negative motives on strangers is called “virtue signaling”. Problem is, humans are generally very bad at knowing what is “good” for them. The person we imagine we are, rarely aligns with the person that other people see in us. Consequently we “want” things that we imagine will be ideal for us, only to find the thing (or person) we thought would be perfect for us, isn’t. Finding out who you actually are, and forgetting about imagining who you want to be, is a more honest and productive way to move through life.

Well he is a millionaire Professor of Psychology, so I suppose he thinks that means he is entitled to dress in a three piece pinstripe suit and tie, probably with cufflinks, because knowing a lot about Jung and rewriting the sentences of his books fifty times means he has sufficient status to dress to impress. I became aware of him from his videos of his classes when his analysis of the original Disney animated _The Lion King_ seemed like a better class than any I ever had at school: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ac98nK5-us_dhH0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpygla2F1tyWmKs.html In these lectures, although he is wearing a casual jacket, he isn't wearing a tie, and I doubt he is wearing cufflinks. My guess is that his current attire is some kind of psychological armour which will both remind himself how much success he has had from his ideas due to the support he has gained from all those who have bought into his world view, and a subtle intimidation to those who come at him in debates who will likely not be as well dressed and to which the audience will regard as being of inferior status even if their arguments are better than his. I recall the TV debate between JFK and Nixon being thought to have been won by JFK, whilst those listening on Radio were adamant Nixon won with better arguments. This is when image got into debates, and American politics. It explains why we got Ronald Reagan as President, and later Donald Trump. Don't be surprised if we get someone as President who got famous from TikTok.

Not just dressing up and down, but also across groups too. Goths have their own social hierarchy in clothes, different from business and different from construction and different from liberals. Your clothes are a flag announcing what group you ally with, what ideas you believe in, and how you are going to behave. Those traits affect how people treat you. It’s not because you wear a suit that people respect you, it’s because you have non verbally committed to *being* more respectful and cordial up front which is a show of good faith which in turn commands respect. The same way a balaclava in a gas station is a non verbal way to announce that you’re doing a crime.

I think when you're at home you can dress however you like - wear pajamas all day or a nice dress, whatever you feel like. But out in public, probably best for the occasion. At work you dress one way, out with friends to a special dinner, another. But I am a huge proponent to dressing up at home too sometimes, put on perfume, wear your jewelry. The video requires a bit explanation (and context properly), from what I understand it's to "dress" above your "actual" status level and who you are. Note: virtue means high moral (concern of behavior or act) or valuing how you conduct yourself and treat others. You dress in a way you wouldn't do otherwise, just as behaving in a way that isn't you. Just so people will assume you are a good person, dress to impress, but just that and noting more. Think of America Psycho; he is well dressed, acts really friendly. But kills women for pleasure (once he is alone with them). It's a form of manipulation, I "tell" (by showing) you, you can trust me (I'm competent) and then once the trust is earned (the good first impression, dress to impress) you destroy this by acting completely out of style.

A distinction should have been made here to differentiate between a social setting or a professional one. I've always believed in dressing for the job I want to have and so I am slightly over dressed - not obnoxiously so, but enough to be noticed. I never wear jeans to work, and am always dress professionally. Social I'm a bootcut jeans w/ whatever feels right for the weather type of person. This over generalization/blanketing statement coming from a man in a pin-stripped suit what appears to be a podcast seems a little rich. I preferred the more humble version of you, Mr. Peterson, he was less preachy.

@martuuk8964

I mean you are still doing what he is describing in the video. You might not be using it to deceive women and you generally enjoy dressing well, but society is such that dressing “above your station” so to speak is considered socially deceptive no matter your intent and people may judge you for it. So people that dress above their station have to work harder and be more charismatic to make up for people who might otherwise perceive them as being deliberately deceptive. The reason people get suspicious of people who dress “too well” is because sometimes it can signal ulterior motives… for example con men often dress well above what they can nominally afford because it helps to win over gullible people. If all you’re talking about is dressing in a suit that’s fine. Plenty of decent looking suits that aren’t super expensive. What people get suspicious of is dudes who dress in designer suits with multi-thousand dollar price tags - when they aren’t a celebrity, politician or high power executive or something.

@@ActuallyJamesS 1. Make sure your clothing fits you not to tight not too lose get them tailored or learn to tailor yourself a sewing machine some thread and some scissors and a seam ripper is all you need. 2. If your a t shirt guy try a henley or polo shirt, then try a casual button down. Only need to wear dress shirts when dressing in a suit you can wear your casual shirts with sports jackets and these can be paired with the pants I'm listing 3. Jeans (Dark wash blue, no mid wash and definitely no light wash for sartorial reasons) Chinos any colors just avoid overly bright tones. Odd trousers are always a win. Dress trousers come with a suit so wear them then. 3. Don't be afraid of textures. 4. Practice and have a default style of clothing you go for depending on your personality. 5. Give a damn.
