This movie is just phenomenal. Screw what the critics and reviews say: this movie is a gem.

Kevin Kline is so underrated. He so should have gotten an Oscar nod for this movie.

I've seen so many comments here about Kevin Kline's voice in this song, but I have to disagree--I think Kline's voice is what MAKES this song so moving. Cole Porter wasn't a singer, he was a composer. And singing a freshly written tune for a musical is not the same as being a classically trained singer on stage performing it in full regalia and lighting. It's the intimacy of and heartbreak in Kline's voice as he's singing to Ashley Judd that moves one to tears. He is to be applauded for this beautiful rendition of this song.

Beautifully said. The fact that Kline sings his own creation directly to Judd (both of them so ill by this point that it makes the scene twice as heartbreaking to watch), and then inter-cuts it with the actual "Kiss Me Kate" performers makes it a positively bewitching sequence. Only Porter songs could create these kind of emotions.
@MignonB19 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with your synopsis of Kline's vocal performance in this film, kendahke! His voice is precisely what makes the movie so "intimate" and tells the story behind the songs of Cole Porter. Ashley Judd was also very well cast in the movie to star opposite Kline. I loved the movie and will watch it again and again.

Movie critics so underappreciated this exceptional motion picture by Irwin Winkler. As others have commented: Kline and Judd deserved so well their award nominations.

I fell in love with Cole Porter and his music through this movie. Musical movie making at its best, capturing the emotions of all Porter's songs so accurately with its storyboard. This is a scene so hard to watch I was bawling 😭 and also the last scene - in the still of the night ohhh 😢😢

This is without question the best version of the song I have heard and I have heard so many. Most people oversing it turning it iinto opera but Kevin Kline nails it. I’m sure it’s what Cole Porter heard in his mind when he wrote it as he was no singer himself but he like to sing. It becomes a very touching love song the way Kevin Kline sings it. So if you’re looking for 1940s drama you won’t find it here you only find the heart of this touching song.

Thank you for posting this wonderful video. I loved this movie and this music. I feel terribly badly for those of modern generations who hear crude, atonal, dissonant noise and think it is music. Is it possible that mankind is actually DE-volving?

Forget life, forget strife, forget everything but the the melody & lyrics of this most beautiful song. It takes me to another place. The lyrics and harmony merge into tears every time I hear it. Close your eyes and lose yourself in the beautiful space and time of the music. God! what a great song. I think I'll play it again.

The best moment in the film, despite the fact that it always makes me cry. Kline and Judd are lovely as Cole Porter and Linda Lee Thomas Porter. They had the most fascinating union: a marriage of convenience, but loved each other unconditionally and ended up as true soul mates. Always lose it at 2:36, his voice cracking and their foreheads bump, destroys me every time. It takes the film from beautiful to singularly gorgeous.

"D'lovely" ranks among the most creative movie musicals ever crafted, It is a delight that does not wear out with repeated viewings. Great music (as in this clip), superb acting, a script with surprise, wit and elegance and a director, Irwin Winkler at the top of his game. Would that life in my suburb be like this film. Would that Any Thing Goes -- for real.

I too stumbled on to the movie on Starz and I can tell you that I will be visiting here over and over again. It hit me because it is just how I feel about someone right now. The movie well it is a biopic but how can Kevin Klein and Jonathn Price not give a stellar perforance. It makes me realize that I need to continue to write and do my poems and stories. The reason is that if Cole Porter can be gone from this earth and still effect us means we should all find our own eternal greatness.

I don't understand how this movie was not a major hit! Maybe it was a matter of timing, or poor marketing. And I don't understand why it lost money. Sadly, much more mediocre movies have gotten more acclaim than this gem. The casting is great, the musical performances spectacular, and Ashley Judd is positively luminous throughout the film. You just can't take your eyes off of her.

How can anyone write about this Cole Porter song and not use the word "haunting"? Probably the most haunting love song ever written..... [sigh] And Ashley Judd is the most beautiful "ill" person ever to grace the silver screen. I'd get sick with her any day. LOL
