¡DESPIERTA BORICUA!
I am not a hater of the United States; but I am a great lover of my Puerto Rican brethren, the legacy of my ancestors, and my homeland..... PUERTO RICO.
PUERTO RICO. ¡CONCIENCIA BORICUA... CONCIENCIA!

I root for Puerto Ricans because I was raised in a Puerto Rican neighborhood and was treated with love. I had so many abuela's . I went to church with them ,school, ate in their homes, played in their homes. I learned to speak some spanish and Adobo and Sazon is the seasoning I use. I'm not Puerto Rican I am Bahamian-American. They treated me like their own even though I had black skin. This is why I hope the next president is Puerto Rican. I love the these people.

Remember in a Puerto Rican home every one is always welcomed with a smile and a hug. Somehow there was always enough food for all our friends. I. Am Puerto Rican and my Puerto Rican family has beautiful black Puerto Ricans. Blue eyes, green eyes and brown eyes. I am proud to be Puerto Rican " yo soy Boricua " con orgullo.i will be flying to This beautiful Carrebean Island "Puerto Rico" with my baby sister celebrating her 60 yrs young born day 8 glorious days.

Puerto Ricans come from west Africa! The Atlantic slave trade brought them to the Americas and the west indies. We are the Indians tribes like Black foot and Tiano. then Spain came and made us light skin but we come in all colors now.

First mistake. No mention made that, after the invasion of 1898, Puerto Ricans were only made US citizens when they were needed to fight in the battlefields of Europe during WWI. They were good enough to be used as canon fodder, but not for much else. Second mistake.regarding the Nationalists, and I quote, "Two of the most famous attempts to bring world attention to Puerto Rico's status, took place in the 1950s. . ." You forgot something that happened 75 years ago, on Palm Sunday, March 21, 1937, Several days before the scheduled Palm Sunday march, the Nationalists had received legal permits for a peaceful protest from José Tormos Diego, the mayor of Ponce. According to a 1926 Puerto Rico Supreme Court ruling, government permits were not necessary for the use of plazas, parks or streets for meetings or parades.[15] However, as a courtesy to the Ponce municipal government, the Nationalists requested the permit nevertheless. The march was to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico by the governing Spanish National Assembly in 1873 and to protest the U.S. Government's imprisonment of the Party's leader, Pedro Albizu Campos, on sedition charges. However, at the last minute, the appointed US Governor of Puerto Rico, Blanton Winship withdrew permission. The Insular Police then started firing on the marchers - killing 17 unarmed civilians, and wounding some 235 civilians, including women and children.T. Most of the killed where shot in their backs. (Blanton Winship, was never prosecuted.) The UN has never changed the status of Puerto Rico as that of a colony. And let's not forget all the other unprovoked invasions of other sovereign lands by the United States on the pretext of freeing them and bringing them freedom. And, most importantly, let us not forget the rape of the north american continent and the genocide of the indigenous populations--Manifest Destiny! One final thought regarding the statement of "one of the oldest democracies on earth . . ." I like to think of what Gore Vidal said about the founders. "Nowhere in the founding documents is the word Democracy used . ." I looked at the founding documents. Gee, he was right. The founders did want a republic--run by the elite group of landed gentry (most of whom were slave owners)--not a democracy. Democracy implies involving by all classes--the great unwashed. They did not want those who toiled the earth to have anything with running the country. Only those who owned the earth could have that privilege, and could vote. So much for the "oldest democracy on earth."

Irene Diaz Reyes Thank you, dear Irene, for helping others to know and understand the TRUTH (La VERDAD) about the U.S.'s treatment of its indigenous peoples. I'm a gringa who is DEEPLY ASHAMED of being part of a country that has been so cruel and made even more so by telling lies that it is a benevolent democracy, when, in fact, it has been a predatory MURDERER of innocent souls, from its native peoples to the people of Japan, Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq. It seems that its victims are usually non-whites for it is basically a racist country, as evidenced by so much of its history throughout its more than 200 yrs. For me, Pedro Albizu Campos, Juan Mari Bras , Lolita Lebron and all of the Puerto Rican freedom fighters such as the two young innocents who were murdered by the CIA (official murdereers of the USA) in 1978 on top of a mountain, and David Sanes, a true martyr for Puerto Rico, who died in one of the bombings of Vieques (using this precious small island for a bombing range makes me furious just to think about it; thank God it has finally come to an end due to the Puerto Rican peoples' steadfast bravery in protesting with Ruben Berrios and Lolita Lebron) and the Macheteros freedom fighters were great heroes who were willing to die for the Puerto Rican peoples' ending slavery for the United States, who uses them for cannon fodder and earlier for cheap labor in the sweatshops of New York City starting in the early 40s.

I speak english,as well as Spanish.

Ronald: you are very disingenuous in saying the USA has done some very wrong things to the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico and ignore the overwhelming great things it has done for Puerto Rico and giving millions of Puerto Ricans a good education with schools and universities and good economic opportunities in the island and in the 50 states. Did you know that it was the U.S. that funded the first public University in Puerto Rico, the University of Puerto Rico and other federal funding to help the poor. Puerto Ricans have the highest wages than any Latin Republic. There is a reason why over 95% don't want to give up U.S. citizenship and reject independence. Put things under perspective and look at the big picture. Overall the relation between the U.S. and Puerto Rico has been good, the Federal government can't solve every problem of every Puerto Rican, that's impossible. This documentary was very bias towards the independence movement even though they ONLY represent less than 5% of the electorate. The lady was very bias towards that movement since she admitted her family was pro independence. I found some flaws from the Vieques incident and why the U.S. went after the nationalists. She forgot to mention most of them were Marxist revolutionaries. Saying you are for independence is one thing but ignoring what kind of system of government they want once they are in power is the key and they want to force that on the majority even though they are less than 1% of the electorate.

I'm 40 years old and its been getting worse day by day since I was born. Its not going to get better until people like Pedro alvizo campo become religion. also, were these max revolutionaries reading before you built the universities, or you trying to say that puerto Ricans were dumb before you got there. Because the guarani were a sea faring people who's reach went all around the world before Columbus landed. You can see for yourself the mention of the long fast boats that use to camsipate Spanish ships in open ocean like no other, and the pineapple in hawaii. Never the less, Pedro campo had degrees in Harvard, so was it his jeans that mad him mad or the sircumstances surrounding him. And to make my nationalist point, campo was basque not Spaniard. Them Spaniard are actually as bad as the anglos

wow Puerto Rico's history have been suppressed by the US in an incredible way that many Puerto Ricans don't know our history including my self at 43 I new nothing of our history except that our ancestors were Indios Tainos & that Christopher Columbus discover Puerto Rico, after watching video after video of Puerto Rico's history my tears come as I try to hide my tears from showing so that my son who's sitting a few feet from me don't ask me why am I crying sorry had to stop a few times from typing so that I can dry my tears, as I was saying Puerto Rico have been to hell & back damages caused by the United States of America & yet after these incredible heroes fought for & died for our land we still want to become statehood to this evil country forgetting those who fought for it I am a shame, a shame that my people have given hope.

¡Bendiciones!

This inspired me tremendously. Growing up in the US as a Puerto Rican my sense of pride for my culture and my island has always been immense. Sadly on visits back to my beloved island have saddened me greatly. The drive of the people doesn't feel as great as it once was. And the people no longer care of the status their homeland holds. They've become so accustomed to living in their endless limbo that many no longer even care.
