What I love about this style of music is that the feeling doesn't get lost in the technical mastery. I find with a lot of metal players, what they're doing is so impressive, but it overrides the music. It becomes a series of difficult exercises that prove the player is superhuman, but doesn't really evoke emotional responses from me all the time. With a style like this, he's doing so many great techniques, but there are dynamics to his strokes, and the chords and scales collide into a beautiful dance that just sort of transports me away from where I am to some place else. I think i need to start learning some gypsy style.

wow this is some good footage for sure into the technique of the gypsy jazz style and some serious downward pick slanting usage. it is amazing from the front view you don't get the real detail required to discover how this is being done but from the magnet perspective its is real easy to see.

Amazing work Troy! The last 7 years I was lucky enough to spend countless hours in several Workshops with Joscho himself. The Standard about this technique is the use of downward pickslanting. The effortless, fast pick movement is a result of forearm rotation. Thanks to the leverage effect a very small Amplitude (millimeters) in movement of the forear results in centimeters movements for the pick. I hope this makes sense. For ascending lines (from higher to lower) for example the triplets Joscho Plays at: 0:38 he always starts the new string with a downstroke. Like this: D U D (new string)D U D D U D D.

To watch this master pick just shows how his style is built into the technique is an amazing treat "the magnet" provides. The downstrokes emphasize the volume swells especially in ascending lines and sweeps. His precision and speed in his alternate picking is amazing. Joscho Stephan shreds so distinctively in the Rinehardt Gypsy Jazz style, yet he is blazing new trails in his own unique way. 😎👍🏽🎶🔥♥️🔥🎶

A fantastic technician and great musician. But also very talented in motor skills. With his speed, he can compensate for large movements resulting from his exclusively used downwards-slanting technique. Likewise his very individual 3-notes-per-string concept, which he plays with DUD - DUD - DUD. In my opinion, players who are not so talented in motor skills will probably find both techniques more difficult than when they learn 2-way-slanting. 2-way-slanting gives both less as well as highly talented players very good opportunities to exploit their own motor potential. There are certainly exceptions, especially when certain movement preferences and learned movement patterns are very pronounced. Josho Stephan has found his own, very unique way for himself. I don't believe that it is equally applicable for everyone, especially for players with weaker motor skills. Thank you so much for these great insights into the playing techniques of outstanding guitarists. I have learned so much about my right hand in the last 2 weeks, more than in a long time. I wish this kind of video had been around when I was a teenager. A great gift to the current young generation. Stay tuned :-)

I'm suscribing Masters in mechanics in march (already a season 2 owner). There is a lot of content. What would be your approach if you would have to learn that all over again? I'm talking about what order. I guess you would start with dwps....but volcano or cascade? When would you learn antigravity? Etc. I hope my question makes sense. Sorry for my english! :D Cheers from Argentina!

Mostly from the wrist but slightly from the fingers when it gets faster. Intersting, i dont hold my pick as what as defined as correct. I have a lot more finger manipulation as compared to this, my aproach has advantages and dis advantages.

Nice technique for an acoustic. I guess in an electric will not work well ..as the bottom strings remains all te time free without muting neither by picking nor by fretting hands, so would not sound clean. I m right?

0:37 - 0:44 wow - on this (all picked) '3 notes per-string' bit, he 'wastes' an upstroke to be able to downstroke on each string change - seems 'inefficient'.. but it sounds amazing..

Descending in alternate picking, and ascending in economy picking. Just like Malmsteen iirc. What seems strange to me is why does he play economy picking while descending with 3 notes per string? economy picking would be more logical.

@troygrady

+Ayoub Minen Joscho does use sweeping in both directions. But not when he's playing traditional Django licks. Those are exclusively downward pickslanting. And since you can only sweep in the direction of your pickslant, this is why Django-style licks only involve ascending sweeping. Descending lines must use legato or repeated downstrokes. This is also true of Yngwie and Eric Johnson, who also only use ascending sweeping. Downward pickslanting is a comfortable chair to sit in. And many players who use it simply never use upward slanting and upward sweeping, because it requires a complete change to the forearm position.

***** thanks for the clarification, and for the videos (:

+Troy Grady Troy, doesn't it seem like it's actually more comfortable to hold the pick in an upward pickslanting position? It sees like it requires less unnatural twisting (suppenation), allowing my forearm and hand to be more relaxed. I actually do both out of necessity, but I've noticed that upward slanting is now feeling more comfortable to me even though I do it less.

+Daniel Lima You are very correct. Marty's picking hand technique and hand position is pretty much exactly like gypsy jazz players. He favors downstrokes when changing strings albeit a few exceptions for certain licks. He also plays straight forward arpeggios with all downstrokes instead of sweeping, similar to many other gypsy players.
