Joseph Campbell continues exploring C.G. Jung’s idea of the Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious by looking at myth in relationship to Jung’s concept of the Persona system - the aspects of one’s personality that been shaped by the society. Campbell then looks at the two ways that myths deal with this: The Right-hand Path, staying within the Persona System; and the Left-hand Path, the dangerous, individual path of breaking out of society’s rules and expectations.
The lecture from which this clip was taken has been released as the first program in Mythos I - The Shaping of Our Mythic Tradition (www.jcf.org/works/mythos-series)

@@mikeappleget482 It does make sense. What is the point of broadcasting all your questions, thoughts and ideas to the world at large? Number 1, almost nobody wants to hear. Number 2, you're still thinking it through, feeling your way intellectually, and that takes undisturbed mental quiet time. Most people, once they start to wake up, are so excited that they want to tell the world everything, but after continual rejection (99.999%), stop doing that for the most part. This is an inward journey and no one can do it for you. Other people don't want to know and no matter what you say, they don't believe you. Not to mention, blabbing all your developing beliefs and knowledge can cost you your job, your family, your friends and your reputation. (You'll be gaslighted as a nutcase.) So why wear your heart on your sleeve?

It's not possible to be both LHP & RHP. You cannot walk in two directions at once and you absolutely don't get the best of both worlds walking South to avoid having to choose between East & West. Attempting to exist between the two isn't embracing both, it is simply standing in stasis.

I will just add: what happens when one learns the Self to a high degree? as a Natural byproduct of spending time saturating the identity and building the material Self after the image and voice through the mirror? the Answer is that you Truly exist for others because you Understand certain things about why it must be so.

The middle path is superior to either left or right, but I seem to be one of the few who know this. 99.9999% of my fellow humans don't get it. Whenever I think of LHP i think of "my way" by frank sinatra, people will say you ought to do this, its be better to avoid that etc etc. But at the end of your life you will be sitting with yourself and the life you have chosen. I quickly realized I did not admire those who conform so I never did. I have less friends than I used to but now I realized they weren't really my friends because they did not know me. I was playing a character constantly. Now Im more me than ever people assume things often as I live in the shadows for the most part. I bear the light to bring about a new day. It can’t be emphasized enough that the ‘left hand path’ spoken of here is only barely survivable if you can have respect for your civilization and you have something to offer. I don’t think it’s about being some kind of miserable debauched criminal - I think it has more to do with being able to detatch from the reward system of your society to live and think and behave in a more sophisticated or nuanced way, and survive all the rejection from that until you can achieve something or produce something that might reshape the world in a beneficial way.

I’ve read and studied and taught classes on JC for over 35 years: It took me a long time to realize that it’s not a choice, as JC says here. It’s often painful and distressing and lonely to be a left handed path person. It wasn’t a choice, if it were, I would have chosen a right handed path however boring. A well worn path is easier to walk. Funny that JC life was a right handed path, education, where he could talk about and share left handed path psychology. He’s a treasure.

According to these ideas, I was on the right hand path until 31 years of age. It had been 3 years since I flipped out and lost the order of my old life, slipping into the left hand path; losing hope and order. Chaos has become the way, any hope of order has become unfamiliar; abstract. The pain of lose was so great, I had to do something about it. I had to lose myself into wilderness. "If a man finds a good wife, he will become happy, if he finds a bad one he will become a philosopher." -Socrates The abyss looks back, gazing into my soul, it flees from me as I give chase. I am okay to suffer; I am not okay to try not to suffer. Now I need opportunity. Like a man on a sick bed, I lay on the broken glass of worthless achievement; useless. Coughing, I rise from my sweat stained pillow to allow water into this fading substance. where am I? Ah that now familiar feeling; I never do know. Why did I come to this place? What was the point? Never mind, it never matters. How delightful, a hidden gem buried here in this empty field that belongs to my forefathers... perhaps this one gem somehow justifies those who find and are unwilling to sell it. Will I be allowed to have it? It doesn't seem to me as though I have a choice but to take that which has been given to me; with gratitude. Life, life has been given to me.

Polar thinking is important here (per, Taoism) . Both left and right approaches to life need not be ‘either/or,’ rather, ‘both/and’ in creative tension. Never, is this a zero-sum proposition. You don’t go into space without living in a canned version of earth (note: an organism is inseparable from the environment that produced it). Two approaches, that are also one; like two sides of a snake as it swims. Each approach defines the other-something of each is in the other- in an inseparable transactional, give and take relationship.

this is a wonderful little clip that explains a lot about the Jungian concept of the self and its dualism (persona vs. anima/animus). Joe gives us so many insights and clues into the heroe's journey here. Yes, it is dangerous - but it is also "following one's bliss" and he goes on with the wise words "a realm without rules" and "your bliss is not mine", to put it another way: truth is a pathless land and you have to find your own truth, there is no general truth, no pill that fits all. To reconcile the left-hand path with Satanism requires a somewhat deeper understanding of why the ego system can perceive its own divine counterpart, the wise, as the devil - while the wise calmly replies: "from my point of view it is you who are the devil."

I conceive of it this way: the right hand path, the hieratic way is the way of obedience to the divine, abolition of ego. Want to be united to God (however He is conceived), until there is no I but God. The goal is the dissolution of the ego-drop in the ocean of divinity, to attain a transcendent, tranquil bliss, without independent existence, beyond all desires or attachments. The left-hand path is the infernal way, seeking power for self, rebellion against divine, ego-aggrandisement. Associated with magic and sorcery. Want to become God, until there is no God but you. The goal is to become an independent deity of one's own realm, where one is free to indulge one's desires 'play God' all one wishes (e.g. Mormonism) ‘There is no God but I and chaos is my apostle.’ Instead of the dissolution of the Self, the goal is the infinite perpetuation of the Self, and the imposition of one's own ego on others. Basically self-actualisation vs self-sacrifice. Selfishness vs selflessness.

To me, as that is all I can speak for, the left hand path is purely that path which goes against the grain, against the established norm and the path of making decisions for yourself rather than following an already established set of rules. It's why religious overlords have tried to compare it to devil worship in the past because it is a way of smearing people who didn't fall into line when they demanded. Everyone's journey is different and we all need to use different methods and tools to get where we want to go so if that tool is now digital media...so be it. Any tool can be used to build good and also can be used to do harm. It is up to the individual with that tool to make that decision. Hope that cleared up my defense of the original post.

When the croupier spins the wheel and says, “All bets are off,” you are here, the ball will bounce for ever. This is a process, not an outcome. Take one step then another. The right hand of God (Dextera Domini "right hand of the Lord" in Latin) or God's right hand may refer to the Bible and common speech as a metaphor for the omnipotence of God and as a motif in art. In the Bible, to be at the right side "is to be identified as being in the special place of honor".

It seems like Incongruities today, in a materialistic society nearly bereft of humanity or spirituality, or personal responsibility towards the impact ones habits may have on the other living beings on Earth and the environment, with so much strife and division and constant distractions, are more likely to lead you down a more enlightening path.

Depending on the terminology of the left hand path, just defines as leaving that if the majority mainstream accepted path or that the majority claim of believe or accept as normal, though an individual could still take the left hand path with many rules and laws to live by and follow that which not be as the normal majority may see as acceptable or Normal. To characterize and analogy of such an occurrence would be those that support a females rights vs those that treated females as cattle or slaves, or also ending racism or slavery among the races thinking one race has superiority over another due to the color of the skin yet they are the same KIND. And even so, all KINDS have certain specific rights, even a dog has rights that which a Human has no right to torture a dog.. that is a part of a rule set what which I call Ancient Ways Laws, Codes, and Practices, how KINDS among the First Order of Kinds (Humans or Dragons), among the Second Order are to treat KINDLY and not abuse or torture those among the Second Order (Dogs or Cattle)..even some have a rule of a Kosher Kill as one may call such among the First Order of KINDS if to kill a Kind among the Second Order to due such for sustenance and food the Kill is to be done as quick as can be done so the Second Order Kind does not suffer and does not feel as much pain if that which can be done. Course, mainstream on Earth think Humans are the only that Exist, many, though theur are MANY First Order Kinds that Exist, Neanderthals, Dragons, Humans, etc, etc, and theur are Laws and Rules that govern that they too, the First Order Kinds are to be civilized with one another, for Laws and Rules that are to govern this for they are not to be Prejudice toward one another if one may look differently physically or even with which their diet consists whether Herbivore (Vegan), Carnivore, or Omnivore, or if the Kinds that exist among them are born Polygamists or Monogamists. Sincerely, LORD ERIC

"The devil' is used to discourage individuality and has been for centuries. Why exactly do you think the symbol of God is the lamb while the symbol of the opposer is a goat? Both animals are similar until it comes to demeanor. One is very wilful while the other is very docile and obedient. The devil is therefore a symbol used to frighten you back into line. Be the goat and explore your own path if you have the stamina for it or be the lamb if that's where your comfort lies...but for your own sake please make that decision yourself and not because dead humans once tried to tell you to do so.

@@penzotoko6619 I guess it depends on what you mean by individuality. If you spin "individuality" too far, it's illusion. We're all ultimately connected. So I can see why this path may be discouraged. Any opinion towards that matter should come with solid argumentation, otherwise it's just dogmatic nonsense.
@penzotoko6619

@@jabinshem1110 By individuality I mean that you think and make decisions for yourself not by a set of preplanned rules. You do what you feel is right regardless of 'what the neighbors think', (if I may borrow a line from Campbell here). I'd counter that your take on spinning individuality and that we're all connected could easily be considered dogmatic nonsense and was also not accompanied by solid argumentation so be careful where you point that stick. If it gets to the point where I have to include a bibliography everytime I discuss philosophy on KZfaq then its time to move these conversations to a more serious venue.

@@penzotoko6619 "Were all connected", that's not dogmatic nonsense, that's a fact. Pragmatically speaking, if we weren't connected, we couldn't communicate and register each other. On a more spiritual level, we are ultimately one, because we inhabit one universe. We are scattered conciousness like matter in the universe, but that ultimately is from one source. We're not ultimately from different sources. And so, "individualism" can only go up to a point, and then reconnect with the community. Also, all conscious content is part of the universal. It can not be otherwise. You can not think something that isn't part of the universal conciousness. Individual conciousness is just an aspect of universal conciousness. What do you think?
@penzotoko6619
@penzotoko6619 4 жыл бұрын
@@jabinshem1110 Well I think I actually agree with your sentiment. That said I wasn't arguing those points but rather the point that without argumentive proof it can't be taken seriously. There are paths of thought that say that only I exist and that all other things are creations of mine...I don't believe this but I also can't disprove it with anything other than opinion and comprehension of what I've learned and see in daily life. My only true disagreement with you is the 'you can't be believed if what you say doesn't line up with what I already believe'. I think that is a dangerous way of being. I can say with certainty that what I believed 30 years ago is certainly not the same as what I believe today. Thereby what I believe in another twenty years will likely be different yet again. To definitively say that a philosophy, religion, or spiritual experience is a 'fact' goes against the very definition of the word fact. Words matter as language is all we have to communicate with in a forum such as this and sadly too many of us take those words for granted. We don't even know where each other come from so it's very possible the vernacular of my region is quite different from that of yours, making certain 'common truths' not common at all to someone from a different background. Admittedly this can easily become pedantic but a discussion where we have only words to go on (no body language, facial expressions or the like) must take care to use the words responsibly.

Disjointed, hacked up, out of context bits and pieces of Campbell"s message? The world needs, for example, the full Moyer / Campbell interviews uncut, But this foumdation is instead hacking Campbell's core messages up into tiny little disjointed hacked up bits and pieces. They are doing that as teasers to commercially monetize Campbel's work. The very nature of Campell's works must remain freely available, intact, in context, and sui- generis on a "giving foot forward" monetization model, which primarily is not the JC Foundation monetization model. Does this greedy foundation have copyrights on these works? Why can't anyone post these works up on IE. You Tube etc. free uncut unedited? For instance the full uncut Campbel / Moyers series. Why is Moyer not acting to counter this outrage? How to obtain these works intact & unedited now like when Campbell was alive without profiteering? That would be Campbell's will. The Campbell Foundation, in the guise of proliferating Campbell's body of work, is instead fragmenting it for commercial monetary motives. So aggravating! Seriously any effort to keep Campbell's work free, and free of being hacked up, and free of being exploited by the world system, then count us in. Metaphorically speaking: God was out for a stroll one day with the devil following along & imitating God. God was carrying something "he" had picked up along the way. The devil runs up and asks. "whatcha got there God?" God replies, "I got the truth." The devil then says," give it to me & I will organize it for you!". JC Foundation you need to stop "money changing on the temple steps".
