I think he's referring to the earliest agricultural societies, especially in contrast to the proto-herding cultures adjacent to them. To my understanding, the theory goes something like one branch of these herders (often referred to as the kurgan folk) were warlike, sky-god worshippers and subjugated their earth goddess-worshipping proto-agricultural neighbors, integrating and hybridizing their mythologies giving rise to the modern male deity agricultural societies.

You're viewing what he's saying through a Western equality/feminist lens, not an anthropological/mythological/psychological lens. The two may be related but I think you missed his point, which is about the structure of the myths of societies and how they correlate to the economic base of sustenance. You can see an example of both mythological structures in modern society that support what he is saying...environmentalism is earth-centered/worship, matriarchal, and many of its adherents are even vegetarians, while those that raise animals for slaughter such as cattlemen in the West are more prone to patriarchal mythic structures, mainly traditional Christianity.
