His research focuses on the neurobiology of emotion, memory and behavior and he has written several popular science books including, "The Deep History of Ourselves." They discuss: brain evolution; what is behavior?; what are emotion and cognition, and how are they intertwined; consciousness, language, and memory.

Great episode. About advantage of having consciousness in terms of fitness. I'm not entirely convinced that consciousness has any advantage. In short, philosophical zombie argument sums it up perfectly, i.e. you can have organism behave exactly the same way as its sentient counterpart, so having consciousness seems redundant.
