Joseph Parker to speak to Flat Bush Primary school students about the role reading has played in his career.
Joseph Parker, will visit Flat Bush Primary school on Friday 20 November as a new Duffy Role Model. He will be gifted books written by the students of Flat Bush Primary and will, in return, present books to the school on behalf of literacy charity Duffy Books in Homes.
The charity’s General Manager, Linda Vagana, is excited to have Mr Parker join the Role Model programme.
“Our programme strongly supports Role Models from all walks of life sharing their personal journey and their connection to reading. We’re very fortunate to have Lupesoliai Laauli-a-le-malietoa Joseph Parker share his story with Flat Bush Primary students and we’re excited for them to have this opportunity to meet him,” Ms Vagana said.
Duffy Books in Homes is a charity that has been dedicated to ‘breaking the cycle of booklessness’ in New Zealand homes for the past 26 years. The literacy programme helps decile one, two, three and four schools get books into the homes of their communities.
The charity empowers schools, teachers, parents, whanau and communities by gifting books three times a year to every child in more than 500 schools from the Far North to Bluff. Duffy Books aims to inspire a love of reading by enhancing reading opportunities through the ownership of books and supporting literacy engagement for young people in New Zealand who may have limited reading material at home. Role Models play a vital role in the programme. They come from all walks of life to inspire tamariki, tell their story at special school assemblies and celebrate the books arriving for the children. Through their korero, they are able to make the connection between reading and achievement.
Duffy Books in Homes currently supports more than 500 New Zealand schools, 100,000 students and 190 ECE Centres, and has given more than 13 million books since it was founded in 1994.
