4 жыл бұрын

Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a Freemason. Freemasonry is a centuries-old, worldwide group of fraternal organizations. While some of its teachings are kept confidential, it promotes loyalty and morality and invites its members to seek knowledge and opportunities to serve others.
The early 19th century saw a surge of Freemasonry in the United States. Elected officials such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and other signers of the Declaration of Independence were known Freemasons. As many as 1,500 members of the Church in Nauvoo, Illinois, were also listed as Masons.
In the years before he became a Mason, Joseph Smith received revelations about specific promises, or covenants, to be made between Church members and God. These covenants are presented to Church members in their holy temples through a ceremony known as the endowment.
Some similarities have been raised between Masonic ceremonies and the endowment ceremony. Ancient parallels may exist between the two ceremonies, as well as some similarities in instructional style. However, the purposes of the two ceremonies stand distinct.
The Freemason ceremonies promote self-improvement, brotherhood, and charity as a means to create a better society. The endowment ceremony focuses on obeying God’s laws and using the Atonement of Jesus Christ to gain eternal exaltation. The most important distinction is that the endowment ceremony is purely the result of divine inspiration.
Today members of the Church are free to explore Freemasonry or any other organization which encourages good citizenship and uplifts and improves its members.

Love how hard the church tries to reconcile temple worship with Masonic rituals! Isn’t it amazing that just two weeks before Joseph Smith implemented these he became a master mason. Not revelation! Simply Joseph doing what he always did! Using the very things he had in his own life to make a religion.

Ironic, a free Mason as Joseph who tried to find protection from masons, was left alone from the brotherhood in many instances of his life. Read about the beginnings of masonry, the founders had to change their history about how to be more efective in bringing more people into the brotherhood. Read how little Joseph knew about the Mason's deep rituals. By the way, Joseph Smith was a true prophet of GOD. This knowledge is independent from any person in this world, because i have prayed about it, and this knowledge comes from The Holy Spirit.

@@BrandonCole_edohi I don't know if you know this but I think you will find it interesting. There is a church I believe its Italy that has art up on the ceilings and it very much looks like what goes on in the Temple. As you study about Free Masons you find that they were an organization that would do special rituals in Catholic and Christian chapels. As time went on as with all the doctrine of Christ it got corrupted. Also there is history books written by Christians dating around 300 AD and they talk about Temple clothing. You also find that the Masons did design for all the old chapels for the Catholics and Christians. It wasn't till around 1351 when Pope Leo said they were of the devil they become much like they are now. They went into hiding because after that it was off with your head or a burning to the stake. So Masons continued on as a secret organization much like it is today. This is also why when Josephs version of the temple rituals is of God first Joseph revealed the temple endowment before he became a Mason, second the differences are many sure it has similarities to Masonry and you now know why.

@@BOON70 Regarding the ancient sources which you've referenced, correlation does not equate to causation. Stone Mason guilds were contracted to build; it wasn't until gothic architecture started going out-of-style that they became speculative Masons. Joseph did adopt the Masonic teaching model (theatrical presentation, mnemonic devices, illustrative symbols, etc.) and adapt it to teach the Church's already-existing doctrine. However, the subject matter, context, and purposes of the Church's temple endowment ceremony wholly differ from those of the degree ceremonies of Freemasonry.

They are not condemned but this is not God's method but rather that of men. Freemasonry members are Gnostics and worship who they call the creator of the universe and it is not revealed until the 33rd degree that this is Lucifer. Since they are obligated to follow the orders of their worshipful masters, the pyramid structure is headed by Lucifer and so all Freemasons are Luciferians by default. They use human sacrifice to control all of mankind. It originates in the apostate church which is Babylon from the Book of Revelation. They use Freemasonry to control all pulpits that I have witnessed, openly having to display the hidden hand, the single finger in the air, the OK sign or the pyramid when they bring their hands together. Another common symbol is the use of black and white color combinations or orange which stands for 33rd degree. Scripture says that the wink of the eye is used to denote evil. Their signs and symbols are to send messages to one another. It alludes to hidden or secret knowledge which is the basis for Freemasonry. You should also be aware of the Kundalini Spirit which is a the serpent spirit. It is common to use words and spoken messages with hidden meanings shared only with those in the know. They like especially to spell words in reverse. None of this is has anything to do with Christianity. It is Satanic witchcraft trying to plant ideas trying to accomplish mind control with subliminal messages. They control FEMA which is the hidden government. All should repent from this system that forms the beast.

You're expecting that Joseph Smith's father blabbed everything to Joseph Smith? You really think he would violate his obligations as a Mason? Hyrum Smith also was a Mason. Some called him a "High Mason" but do you really think he would violate his obligations as Mason? For what purpose? What genuine, primary evidence have you for that? Then again, a lot of what has been claimed about the Masonic connections has been utterly without merit. Frequently, the starting point for the claims and comparisons have been from rituals in which Joseph Smith couldn't have participated, such as from older versions of the Scottish Rite (there also was no Scottish Rite in Illinois until 1846), or from Monitors published in 1860 or later, or from obscure rituals or organizations of which Joseph Smith would not have been aware. Anyone can take snippets of text out of context from various sources, rearrange them, and then claim that they are direct evidence of borrowing. Are there some elements that have a certain amount of correspondence? Yes. But is one just a copy of the other? No. Not at all. An apostate from the Church, Fanny Stenhouse (whose husband also was a Mason at one time), said the following about such claims: "I has always been commonly reported, and to a great extent believed, that the mysteries of the Endowment House were only a sort of imitation--burlesque, it might be--of the Rites of Masonry; but I need hardly say that this statement when examined by the light of facts is altogether ungrounded and absurd...." (Fanny Stenhouse, _"Tell It All": The Story of a Life's Experience in Mormonism_ [Hartford: A. D. Worthington and Co., 1875], 354.)

@@OmegaMan28 No, he did not. We know the exact dates when Joseph Smith was initiated, passed and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. He never went on to participate in anything else beyond that. Besides, in fact, there was no Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in Illinois until the year 1846. That was four years too late. The proof texts you have in mind actually have at their root mistranslation and misunderstanding, as well as being taken from their historical and cultural contexts. Several times the Bible says that people saw or will see God (Moses, 70 of the elders of Israel, Isaiah, Stephen, angels of little children, those who are pure in heart, and those who will dwell in the city of New Jerusalem). And that passage in Isaiah that you have in mind comes from a section of Isaiah that has been rewritten so many times by scribes, and interpolated, that many scholars have come to believe it was written by a different author, and that the Book of Isaiah was written by two or more authors! Freemasons didn't establish the "Mormon" religion. It was established by non-Masons before many members of said Church later became Masons. Joseph Smith was the one directly involved in and leading the organization of the Church. That is historical fact.

God says in scripture that he alone is God and he knows of no other Gods. Look it up. My pride has been knocked down realizing what a miracle it was that Jesus, being God in the flesh (Immanuel), saved a lowly sinner like me. In very general terms only, but Masonic rituals were NOT SHARED outside of Masonic temples. Those rites are entered into with strict promises to not share them to outside groups. In fact, the anti-mason movement was ignited in 1826 when William Morgan, a bricklayer in western New York "disappeared" after he "supposedly had broken his vow of secrecy as a Freemason by preparing a book revealing the organization’s secrets. When no trace of Morgan could be discovered, rumors of his murder at the hands of Masons swept through New York and then into New England and the Mid-Atlantic states."

Well, they aren't exactly the same. In fact, there are signs in the LDS temple ceremony that have no counterpart in Freemasonry. Of course, if a temple patron gave the tokens wrong, the first two would be identical to those in a Lodge. But if given correctly they are not even the same. The other two are not identical or even close to anything in Masonic rituals. Sad thing about the attempts at drawing parallels is that text has to be sifted around and taken drastically out of context to make the parallels look closer. Worse, a good amount of such material is taken out of a book published in 1860, and that is too late to be of use. Even worse, this latter material was part of two Rites to which Joseph Smith never belonged.

Trying to dissect everything about a mortal man did or didn’t do in his life is temporal. It’s not as important as the divine. Joseph Smith lived so long ago and he was lied about so much. Plus nobody alive today knew him. His own writings are available and there are some of his posterity with journals. But it would be like saying when someone writes a book we should get to know everything about them, their whole life should be on show. That isn’t what’s important. What they wrote in their book is. I hope I’m not coming off as rude. It’s just too easy to get caught up in Joseph Smith himself, which you would never still really know him. Dissect the gospel of Jesus Christ and test it. Is not the First and Great commandment to love God? And the Second to love thy neighbor as you love yourself? Yes, it’s hard to obey all the commandments at times. That why repentance is so critical. Another great commandment is Matthew 5:48 “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” I can tell you myself, this is probably the hardest commandment to keep. How great is it then that our Father in heaven in merciful! Nobody said that we’re earning heaven. If that was the case nobody would make it. It’s God’s mercy and grace, it’s Christ’s sacrifice and love that saves us. Life is more than just being a decent person and praising Jesus. It’s about aligning your will with the Fathers, keeping his commandments, serving others. It’s about becoming like our savior, and Heavenly Father. If this is not the case then why does God care? Why create this marvelous world, our bodies, our spirits, only to make a few happy forever? Heaven is so much more than joy, it’s so much more than just peace and goodness. It’s inheriting everything the Father has through Jesus Christ. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

I think it makes sense to be said both ways. For example one can say that Moses lead the israelites out of egypt, or one can say that the Lord lead the people out of Egypt. Because was sent by the Lord what Moses and was given power and instruction from God, really all credit should go to the lord. However, it isn't correct to say that Moses did. The same thing goes for Joseph Smith. The important thing is that we understand that prophets are instruments in the Lord's hand.

Nope. Charles Taze Russell was not a Freemason, much less of the 33°. Neither was Joseph Smith coroneted an IGH. And I would know. If they were, I'd find their names in the lists. And I don't find their names in the lists. That said, Joseph Smith was a Mason. He was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason (that's 3°, not 33°). But that didn't happen until 1842, 12 years after the Church was first organized in 1830. You've got to watch those time lines and historical chronologies. But the early Church had a "hidden wisdom," which they communicated "in a mystery" to "the perfect" (1 Corinthians 2:1-10). This was different from the basic teachings.

@MrNirom1
@MrNirom1 3 жыл бұрын
@funkyfresh There is a big difference between the ritual... and what is taught in the ritual. It was a special name... for you. There are only so many names in the entire world and there has been more people in the world than there are names. So repitition was enevitable anyway. But to let a name that you share with other people in a temple ceremony that happens to you only ONE time in your entrie life bother you to thinking that the name given to you to use is somehow not important because others share that same name. The Lord gave an example of this way of thinking. He called it straining at gnat. The Saints in Brighams day were far different than those of today. As children we would swear to someone that we were telling the truth by saying something like.. Pray to God, hope to die... stick a needle in my eye. That meant that were were really serious about what we were saying. The early saints to show how much they would keep the promises they made to God would speak a specific way that they would die before revealing what they were taught. In my childhood... as a Catholic... all the women wore hats with a mesh that covered their faces. We don't do that anymore. It was something that referenced reverance... and it was an outward sign. There are other ways today that we do different things that accomplish the same things. All these things we did would be considered rituals. And rituals are a way to help teach a concepte by repeating something over and over and over again. Christ never taught anything about the sign of the cross like Catholics do. That is one of their rituals. The endowment itself is very special. Joseph taught it with rituals... and some of the actual rituals have changed... but meanings have remained the same. It is not the words that have been used... but it is the words we now use. How do we show someone that we have an honored contract with them? In ancient times... they would do things like break a stick in two and give on side to each party... that anyone who had the stick the contract was with that person... and not necessarily the one who orginally agreed to the contract. They could break a stone in two... they could agree to a specific hand clasp... they could do whatever means that both sides agreed to... as a sign that they were the now the current owners of one side of the agreement. We learn that there are different non verbals signs that can be given that means something to just the parties of the contract. And yet others could have made the same verbal signs that means something completely different. It is alway between the two parties. And in the Temple... these were the rituals or signs that Joseph Smith used to teach the saints how important it was to remember these things.

I think it helps to understand eternal principles (versus those subject to change) by looking at changes from Old Testament times such as the tabernacle / temple with its Holy of Holies and animal sacrifices. Much different from today's temple worship. Similarities include symbolism that points to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and rites of repentance to be sanctified in Christ. The Church has acknowledged that withholding the priesthood, etc from black members was not a matter of revelation but a result of cultural influence. Thus, it is possible for today's called leaders to make concessions or changes in response to social pressures and in a misguided attempt to appease the mob. But eternal truths and the divine authority remains intact. I've recently considered these so I hope this helps.

Policy is not doctrine. Doctrine never changes. Policy may turn people off even though Covenants never change... at the end of the day, everyone will still be sealed to their eternal companion no matter how the endowment changes. I hear the endowment session is much shorter now since there is so much work to be done in the latter days and to allow more people to attend the temple in the short amount of time we have now days. The videos changed too again. Church is only two hours and much is taught at home and should be taught at home. Changes like this will be expected more so as the work progresses. I was LDS for decades but find these things troubling: 7 weeks after becoming a mason, JS presented the temple ceremony. The executions of the penalties were bizarre, disturbing, and eventually eliminated, why has the ceremony changed so many times and ways? Why does this have no resemblance to the temple of Israel if it is a "restoration"? Why is it so very similar to masonry if not a copy? I wish these things weren't troubling but they are.

Plus, historically, weren't the freemasons involved in the construction of Solomon's Temple? If so, it is possible that freemasonry was influenced by what was observed at Solomon's Temple, which would have been similar to the practices that were later revealed to Joseph Smith?

I am 74 years old now and was told by my father, when I was a young boy, another reason about this issue. When Solomon's Temple was built (957 BCE) those of his followers began using the Temple. However walls around the Temple were still being built. It was then that the "Masons" building the walls around Solomon's Temple observed the ordinances and that was how they created a version for themselves. Maybe someone could tell me - when was the Free Mason organisation originated? I found this in Wikipedia " The earliest known ritual places the first masonic lodge in the porchway of King Solomon's Temple"\

Ok. So basically, masons up to a certain point were literally stone mason unions. these were called "operative masons" , they began to form lodges as a place to care for those injured on the job and to provide a community for these guys. at some point, no one quite knows when or why, they started accepting people who weren't actually stone masons, but curious intellectuals, ect. these became speculative masons. The Lodge of Edinburgh (Mary's Chapel) No. 1 seems to be the oldest that hasa direct line to operative masons

A few years ago I toured a Masonic temple. As a Latter-day Saint, it really freaked me out how similar the two temples were and the ceremonies. (Or so i thought.) it caused me to doubt my faith. Instead I should’ve doubted my doubts. I went inactive for a while after that. A few months later one of the missionaries who initially taught me when I was investigating the church happened to reach out to me. Not only did he help me come back to church, he helped me understand my doubts, my faith crisis, my questions were normal to ask and that my concerns and struggles were going to be eliminated through the atonement. That man is now my husband, and I’ve never had a stronger testimony!

Albert Pike, one of the greatest authors of freemasonry wrote: Lucifer, the Light-Bearer! Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darkness! Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual or selfish Souls? Doubt it not!iv The devil is the personification of Atheism or Idolatry. For the Initiates, this is not a Person, but a Force, created for good, but which may serve for evil. It is the instrument of Liberty or Free Will. They represent this Force, which presides over the physical generation, under the mythological and horned form of the God Pan; thence came the he-goat of the Sabbat, brother of the Ancient Serpent, and the Light-bearer or Phosphor, of which the poets have made the false Lucifer of the legend.v The true name of Satan, the Kabalists say, is Yahweh (GOD) reversed; for Satan is not a black god, but a negation of God...the Kabala imagined Him to be a "most occult light."vi

@@alexwatson7068 Eric M. Covered a good chunk of it. It's easy to dismiss the Freemason situation from today's perspective, but in the 1820's there was a huge Freemason scare that basically buried the movement, becoming taboo. The gadianton robbers are styled after the social view of masons. The elements of how Freemasonry started and grew in Nauvoo was VERY watered down so a ton of context is missing that doesnt shine a good light on it. You could argue the parallels to today's endowments are minor similarities (I disagree, but its debatable for sure) but the endowments have changed twice in major ways. Those changes were removing freemason elements. You put them back in and it's obvious that the entire foundation of the temple endowments is based on Freemasonry. Also, the idea that freemasons extend out to the temple of Solomon is a complete fabrication based on no evidence except that some lodges boasted they did. This boasting happened during a time lodges were having somewhat of a pissing contest of who was better, so one say "oh yeah? We date back to solomon's temple, how 'bout them apples." Almost no one except people who need to justify the temple endowments believe Freemasons date back to Solomon's temple.

There is absolutely no need to be Mason if you are Christian, we are servants of the true God. No one can serve two masters. We preach the gospel of salvation because this world is corrupted and will perish soon, we don’t build this world because this world doesn’t belong to us, we don’t want to replace God with technology - this would be the way of Cain. We believe that God will build the world for us, but we must die as a consequence of sin. The more are saved the faster the restoration happens. The goal is quite the opposite than Masonic vision.

@@hjorth3387 Not really. But you are led to believe so. Consider the following portion of a talk. Many years ago I had an interesting conversation with a man who was a member of the Roman Catholic church. He was a great scholar; he must have had a dozen languages at his tongue's end, and seemed to know all about history, science, law, philosophy, and all the rest of it. We were frank and friendly with each other, and one day he said to me: "You 'Mormons' are all ignoramuses. You don't even know the strength of your own position. It is so strong that there is only one other position tenable in the whole Christian world, and that is the position of the Roman Catholic church. The issue is between 'Mormonism' and Catholicism. If you are right, we are wrong. If we are right, you are wrong, and that's all there is to it. These Protestant sects haven't a leg to stand on; for if we are right, we cut them off long ago, as apostates; and if we are wrong, they are wrong with us, for they were a part of us and came out of us. If we have the apostolic succession from St. Peter, as we claim, there was no need of Joseph Smith and 'Mormonism;' but if we have not that apostolic succession, then such a man as Joseph Smith was necessary, and 'Mormonism's position is the only consistent one. It is either the perpetuation of the Gospel from ancient times or the restoration of the Gospel in latter days." (Elder Orson F. Whitney, Conference Report, April 1928, Second DayMorning Meeting, p.60)

He seemed pleasantly surprised when I not only demonstrated that I was knowledgeable of the facts and the history of both Freemasonry & the church, but that I did not feel the need to get defensive as I had a testimony that God's means of inspiration is varied. This was our only discussion but it ended up being quiet enjoyable for both of us. It helped me realize the value of my scholarly and intellectual approach toward the gospel and I think he enjoyed meeting someone that was emotionally tempered and thoughtful about seemingly tough questions. I hope he sees this video and comment.

I’m a traveling man and while the basics of this video are somewhat true, it isn’t the full story. Masonry wasn’t simply a ‘place’ where Joseph received inspiration. He literally took organization, structure, and symbolism from Masonry and placed them in his temple ceremony and in the outside of some temples. Is this wrong? No. Joseph was a poorly educated young man who saw a framework he could use and adapt to. And doing so may or have not have got him killed by other Freemasons because he openly wrote and spoke about what he learned from Masons in a manner he was not supposed to do so.

A few who are Latter-day Saints and Masons who provide appropriately sensitive deeper dives into the relationship between the Latter-day Saint temple and Freemasonry include: Greg Kearney, Mark Koltko-Rivera, and Ted Cross.

@@KTPurdy Sadly, some of Homer's stuff is a bit misleading. Frankly, I don't understand that. He connects Joseph with two obscure Rites that weren't even in America at the time, and were thousands of miles away. And, when I looked into the rituals of the Adoptive Rite, they had nothing even remotely like what is in the LDS temple ceremony. Like I said, I don't understand why he tried to make such connections.

They aren’t directly mentioned as I understand it, however the construction and use of temples is mentioned numerous times (2 Nephi 5, Jacob 2, Mosiah 2, etc.) as well as adherence to the law of Moses, including mosaic temple rituals. From what we have from the Books of Exodus, Leviticus, etc. the mosaic rituals include temple clothing almost identical to that worn in modern day as well similar imagery to that used in the modern iteration of the endowment. Also the doctrines taught in the endowment are reiterated countless times throughout the Book of Mormon, implying knowledge of at least a majority of the ceremony by the main authors of the Book of Mormon. Therefore, the presentation of temple rituals, including the ancient presentation of the endowment are implicit throughout the Book of Mormon.

The point of temple worship is that you have to prove your worthiness and loyalty to God by keeping his commandments in order to receive higher knowledge of all things. It is mentioned in the Book of Mormon that when Jesus visited the Nephites he spoke of things that could not be written. This could be things pertaining to sacred oaths and covenants that shouldn't just be tossed around like small talk. People who don't understand and respect an idea tend to look down upon those who practice them because they believe it is wrong. Things that are sacred and special to us members of the church aren't supposed to be common knowledge but unfortunately because of modern technology and the internet, anyone can create a false narrative. The point is, things as sacred as temple worship would not be entrusted to mere pages of a book but would have to be directly revealed by the most perfect being who is God the Father

Freemasonry goes against the LDS religion. Their god is referred to as "jahbulon" freemasonry is its own religion so I don't understand why you're allowed to be a different religions and also Mormon. That would contradict the commandments that you shall not worship false idols or have no other god before me

Hi @Lowd Ethan. Freemasonry is a fraternal organization. In addition to participating in rituals where they commit to be loyal and trustworthy, they also participate in community-building activities and make charitable contributions to various causes. This video is an introductory video on the topic; we encourage you and others to learn more about this topic, both from Church resources and other accurate and reliable sources.
