the essence of musicality and humanity. I always think of Joseph Spence and the Pinder (Pindar?) family recordings at Easter as, along with this one, the Easter-themed "Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold God's Body Down" is my other personal fave and always opened my radio show on Easter Sunday night with this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8Cjl5tqxry-aYk.html

Every now and then you just crave Joseph Spence. He's like a fine caviar.... I was so fortunate to enjoy his set at World Control Studios just outside Philly in the 70s... I appreciated that moment more than you can know.

I served in the US Navy on Andros in the 70s and saw him perform at a nightclub called Papa Gays. I liked Ry Cooder but Joseph Spence was an original

One thing I can tell you about Mr. Spence...that night he played just outside Philly at Hoyle Osborn's "World Control Studios" circa 1972, was - 1) I knew him (his music), loved him, and understood the privileged moment I was in....2) He played his whole set so out of tune that I developed a pulsating migraine halfway through (but I listened painfully through the pulsations) and that was the only painful adult migraine I ever had in my life. But....if you could tune his guitar (or tolerate him untuned) as did I .....he was BEYOND MIRACULOUS! I loved him then and to this day. Kate McGarrigle and I, she pregnant with Rufus Wainwright at Lena's Caffe, used to play this music together in the daytime just hanging out. Bahamian music on guitar...beyond wonderful ...Slavery...godawful but omg...the talent, and the melding of sophisticated beauty that enriched us all and produced a JOSEPH SPENCE! Thank you Jesus!

I love his style - so unique and uplifting - I love his joyful laughing - I bought his CD on Folkways label many years ago and I was immediately absorbed by his wonderful music - I had to laugh out loud many times because he reminded me of a crazy captain drunk of a bottle of rum ;-)

Thelonius Monk, Dirt McGirt and Joesph Spence all have a similar spirit in their music. I suspect it comes from the way they feel time.

also check this out Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers "Titanic" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zp-pitidmd-0iWg.html There was a longer slower very stately and subtlely rhythmic version on a different record in a set issued with the USA bicentennial on New World Records I think it was called. There were at least a couple of records of the Georgia and Carolina Sea Island groups. In addition to spirituals and gospel tunes, there are things like ring games. "Sometimes" a ring game with Bessie and a bunch of children has also been remixed in a very effective modernized version for the hip hop generation that updates the original

@jimvivian92455 жыл бұрын
old song, the first recording of Joseph Spence available in USA was 1958 Folkways recordings that include this tune but the sound quality here is a lot better so it's probably a later recording from 1960s or 1970s
