In celebration of our digital map that highlights New York City-inspired artworks from the first Biennial in 1932, curator Barbara Haskell explores two key works by Joseph Stella: Neapolitan Song (1929), which was featured in the 1932 Biennial, and The Brooklyn Bridge: Variation on an Old Theme (1939), currently on view in our seventh floor collection galleries.
Haskell also illuminates Joseph Stella’s relationship to the New York Botanical Garden, and the dichotomy between his interest in urban American scenes and his renderings of plants and nature.
