What a great lesson... straight forward, focused, yet rich with info. Yes, you have to know CAGED, and enough about scales that you understand 6ths, 7th chords (and 9th chords?). But, once you've got that a bit, seeing these embellishments and applications are super cool. And, all that, under 5 minutes!

That's cool. I noticed I had to put my index finger on the G string not the B as I would usually do to play that triad, but with the 6th added, you already have the B string fretted, so you don't need the index finger on the B, so it works and sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

He's just expanding on a simple concept - 12 bar blues, chords A D E, with an Am pent scale thrown in; then using passing tones like chromatic run ups (notes or chords); think of how a blues scale works beside a pentatonic minor scale. He adds 2 other well know ideas - ii V I (in A thats B E A), and the III which in A is a C. In truer terms there are dominant 7s and suspended notes here, but the premise is using: A D E 12 bar or (A flat) A x2 (D flat) D x2 x2 (E flat) E - B E A (turnaround) or the basic E (E flat) D A C. A few triad shapes will help you with the A chord (see Kind Hearted Woman Blues), and the C7 shape used chromatically (3rd fret D7 5th fret E7). There a nice D flat sound (5th string 4th fret) etc. And don't forget the A string and E string can be open and pressed as you wish. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8B4na6Kl8fdaWg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtGaa7ZplsjLpoU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/juCIgsaYxJy4lWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8B1ja2i29zcinU.html Trouble being it isn't as easy as it looks to keep the rhythm going, mix it up add the fills and passing tones. So nail the concept then watch him and others and listen to proper Delta, Texas and Chicago blues. It helps if you try it out as finger style acoustic beforehand.

I would have never thought about the 6 chord as I would have thought it was too close to a major 7 - 4 chord. When I play it, it does sound very "major 7th." When Josh plays it, sounds great.

Ok. So my fingers are just not fast enough yet. Ive maxed out my what you called the chicago box effort. Doin exactly what you showed already. Backwards ect. I can hear notes in my head i want to play but not yet figured out quite how yet. More effort needed. Thanks for this. I can take something from tis so it does help even though i am sure it is basic for a lot of people......BUT....it was not always basic , was it?
