The Nürburgring Nordschleife is one of the toughest, most grueling tracks in the world. And while the Grand Prix circuit has hosted Formula 1 recently, the Nordschleife section hasn't done so since 1976. But could the category return? Or is it a stretch too far?

You’d have to be brave to extend a stint on any set of tyres considering they last about 50 miles and 3-4 laps you’d be stopping for new tyres also with a 5-6 minute lap time (a rough guess) q1 would be suicidal q2 chances are you won’t be able to do 2 timmed runs and q3 would be 1 timed lap it just wouldn’t word despite how entertaining it could be

Yeah and the racing would be boring especially with current cars. If you’ve played gt sport or another racing game you know how difficult it is to go side by side also they would need multiple pit lanes wider barriers and more run off a wider track in general. Not exactly, Australian Supercars have a few endurance rounds (or just one these days) where the full time drivers partner up with either young drivers, retired drivers or drivers from other series. Most famously the Bathurst 1000, won in 2020 by Shane van Gisbergen, who’s co-driver was the retired Garth Tander. However further down the field, there were many young drivers there to gain experience. An example of the driver pairings for F1 if they were to do this could be: Hamilton - Vandoorne Bottas - De Vries Verstappen - Albon Perez - Daruvala Ricciardo - Verschoor Norris - Ghiotto Vettel - Hulkenberg Stroll - Drugovich Alonso - Kvyat Ocon - Zhou Leclerc - Ilott Sainz - Shwartzman Gasly - Lawson Tsunoda - Vips Raikkonen - Kubica Giovinazzi - Pourchaire Schumacher - Fittipaldi Mazepin - Deletraz Russell - Aitken Latifi - Ticktum Okay, so some of these are a stretch, but you get what I mean, it would be a great experience for the young drivers, and a good way for the likes of Hulkenberg and Vandoorne to show their speed.

If you upgrade this track to a FIA Grade 1 circuit, you’re going to lose the very thing that makes the Nordschleife so special. The narrow spaces, the lack of run-off areas, the tight corners, the bumps, the jumps, the trees so close behind the barriers... All of that would have to be compromised. Not a great idea.
@RACECAR
@RACECAR 3 жыл бұрын
As much as I love the nurburgring and as much as I do like F1, a Grand Prix on the Nordscheliefe would not be even remotely close to a good idea for 3 big reasons: - Overall Work: The amount work to repave or resurface and reprofile the entire track would have issues specific to the topography (An issue not present with today's current circuits). The amount of replaced curbing, widening (Because today's F1 cars are, if we're really honest, barely suitable for ANY track in F1, hence the less then steller racing), gravel traps and added runoff would have significant issues given where the track is. - The Overall Cost: I see some people already saying that they don't care about the cost (Typical fans, they don't care when THEY aren't the ones having to pay for substantial work). Problem is, cost is kinda a big issue for the Nurburgring and their owners. Are we gonna keep forgetting that this track has had multiple issues staying financially afloat (Does "Save the Ring" Not ring a bell to anyone?). I guarantee that the complete revamp that took place to bring F1 back to the Red Bull Ring (Formerly the A1-Ring) was far less expensive then a entire operation would be for Nordscheliefe. There wouldn't be many backers if any, even financially stable ones, that would look at this as a financially viable option so I don't think the owners themselves would be able to make that happen given the trouble the circuit has already had to keep being opened. All the complaining the fans do now about the racing, would all this work and extra money be even worth just to have that x1000? Those tickets better sell out Day 1, otherwise this would be by far the biggest financial disaster just to satisfy that tiny amount of people interested. - The Character: While I tend not to be the biggest fan of nostalgia (Purely because how often an excuse its used by fans and people in general just to have awful ideas, exaggerate how bad things are now while ignoring the past was not that much better and make tacky liveries that ironically aren't even remotely close to the source material they claim to pay homage to), Changing this just for Formula 1 is terrible for the exact same reason the idea of F1 coming back to Watkins Glen or Long Beach: The overall character of the track. For abunch of people that hate Tilke for designing "Soulless" Tracks or Redesigns that Bucher previous ones, there sure are people that are very quick to the idea of doing that very thing to this track. The Nordschleife you know now would have to basically die just to satisfy this fetish of having Modern F1 cars on it (Same goes for the aforementioned Watkins Glen and Long Beach). And then there comes the one very reason this won't even happen: Length. Currently, the longest allowable circuit that is Grade 1 is Spa at only 7.004 kilometers (which is pretty much near or is the maximum allowance). The Nordschliefe on the other hand is a far longer 20.830 kilometers (and it only gets longer if you want to used the combined layout, which extends to 25.378). So basically if the Nordschliefe even is to stand a chance at having F1, it needs to be drastically be reduced. What would even be the point if THAT happened? All in all, its not at all possible financially or by rule for the North Loop to host F1 and frankly, I'd be fine with it staying that way.

Great video as usual, Josh. Another issue with the venue is emergency response times. There's simply no way you could staff a track this long with enough paramedic teams and helicopters to meet the driver extraction and fire requirements F1 has these days. Hell, even getting adequate camera coverage of this track is an expensive and difficult feat. That also brings us to what was Old Hockenheim's downfall, security. The old track was torn up primarily because due to various regulations it was impossible to have adequate security at every part of the track leading to potential track invasions, as was proven in the race in 2000. You'd probably also need multiple Safety Cars like they have at Le Mans and would lose at minimum 1/12th of the race every time one came out, 1/6th if it was around for two laps. There's also the fact that to even do demo laps F1 cars needed to be cranked to their maximum possible ride-height and even then they had to drive veeeeery carefully in certain sections to avoid utterly grounding the car. Still, the most important takeaway from this? Rip Sabine. Queen of the Green Hell.

We need to have a Nurburgring extravaganza for F1. The race would be on the GP track but Qualifying would be on the 24 hour endurance layout. Practices would be as fallows. P1 every driver gets 10 flying laps on the nordschleife, P2 would be 10 flying laps on the endurance layout and P3 would be after qualifying on the GP track. Qualifying would have each driver be given a window to go out in each qualifying session with the better times in the last qualifying sessions being at the start of the next session. Qualifying has groups so all 20 or 15 or 10 cars aren’t all out there at the same time which would be very hectic for qualifying.

Some extra historical info: As he said at 1:45 there was a racing series going on the public roads of around 33 km (around 20 mi). That race was so dangerous that almost every time there was a race, there would be at least one death of a racing driver and/or a spectator. Therefore they decided to make an dedicated race track (so for safety) but there was one term (probably more but that doesn't matter in this story): it had to be as long as the old race, so 33 km/ 20 mi. They ended up with a track of around 28km/17mi. But I hear you thinking: 'didn't they say it was shorter in the video?' Well, yes that's correct, let me explain. Nowadays there is the GP-Strecke (gp layout), nordschleife (north loop), and those two combined. But in the early days there was no GP-strecke. As you may thought by yourself: 'why is the north loop called the north loop?, was there ones a southern loop?' Yes there was. The south loop was called the südschleife (south loop) and was around 7.5 km (4.7 mi) long, so way shorter than the northen loop. They were connected through a start and finish area wich were two long stretches. Nowadays the südschleife is sometimes part of the normal public road and if you get yourself through some green stuff you can still walk on some parts.

There used to be Südschleife too. Roughly around the same area as the GP track is today, about 2 miles longer than the GP track. It got demolished. Many people forget the Green Hell used to be much bigger than just the Nordschleife.

I had the idea of making a new circuit within the Nordschleife.In my mind it would start with the GP-Strecke and would use some parts of the Beast itself but would have a fully new section at the infield,touching the actual city of Nürburg to create a hybrid track feel before returning at Antoniusbuche or Tiergarten to finish the lap with a blast.AND also would have a Sabine corner and some other corners that would resemble actual Nordschleife ones but with more safety added (like a new Karussell or Bergwerk). I'd probably name it the Mittelschleife because i'm unoriginal with names and stuff but i think it is still worth it given it would probably not be at the financial ballpark of making the entire Green Hell Grade 1.It would be around 10-12 km making it by far the longest track with barely more than 30 laps though so a second pit lane might be required if someone pops a tire or gets damage in the middle of the circuit.

Not to mention the pure amount of marshals, recovery equipment, electrical signs for the different flags, the additional electrical work needed to accommodate all that and medical stations that are up to F1 grade around the track, it's a nice idea but REALLY impractical.
