Alfred Hitchcock made 53 films and one daughter (thanks Truffaut). Join me as I count down his top 10 films before eventually crowning the winner - Hitchcock's best overall movie.

I'd change a few things around but replace Dial M for Murder with Notorious. It's one of my top 3 Hitchcock films.

One of Hitchcock’s underrated films. “The Wrong Man.” With Henry Fonda and the underrated Vera Miles is riveting and heartbreaking. It was based on a true story about a man who is falsely accused of a series of armed robberies. Hitchcock didn’t cameo in the film. Appearing at the beginning. Letting audiences know that the story is stranger then anything he had done up until that point. Because it’s a true story. He would cast Vera Miles in Vertigo. But she became pregnant in which Hitchcock famously said to her. “Vera, don’t you know it’s in bad taste to have more than two.” Miles who was under contract to Hitchcock. Ended it on the set of Psycho. Mikes took no crap from him. Miles does sort of appear in Vertigo. She’s the portrait that Kim Novak is looking at in the museum

One of my favorites is “Sabotage” from 1936. If I were to make a Hitchcock top 10, it would definitely appear somewhere on it.

" To Catch A Theif " is Hitchcocks masterpiece In my opinion, the plot is tight, the cinematography is spectacular, the wardrobe, set designs, lighting, locations, and last but not least, the dialogue and sexual inuendo between Grant and Kelly, was with Hitchcocks blessing improvised frequently, but not overly so, make this truly a masterpiece in film making!

I agree with Psycho and Rear Window being at the top but recently saw The Birds again after many years and thought it was really scary. I think it had to do with thinking there must be some form of bird virus going on making it believable they became aggressive that really got to me. Thanks for the list as I plan to see how many more I can watch again on KZfaq some seeing now in color remembering my old black and white TV days.

I'm going with his Brit productions. The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, The Man Who Knew Too Much (hated his later version),. Didn't care for his last few films but every thing else terrific.

The Birds should be a lot higher than number 10, just for the scene where the Mitch's mother finds the body of the farmer.

Notorious should be in the top ten. I love your top ten---it is difficult to choose, but Notorious is his first great American film, and it doesn't get enough attention. Like you I love North by Northwest--it's my personal favorite (though not Hitchcock's best), but there would be no North by Northwest without Notorious, and frankly, it's a much better film: better plot, better acting, better suspense. As great as Psycho is, no way it's number one over Vertigo.

Sabotage was shown in the intro and an easy top 10 film. As is The 39 Steps (less clunky than North by Northwest). The Birds is overrated but Dial M for Murder even more so. The Wrong Man is likely top 10 for me.

at no 4, I realised that one of Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo and Notorious wouldn't make the cut. Talk about suspense! Which of those could be left out? Of course, I disagreed. But Psycho is top for me, too. I have to give Vertigo a re-watch. I just hated the premise so much I was never a big fan on a gut level even if I could see its technical beauty. It is the one great Hitch that is not among my top five, but I'm convinced by force of numbers to give it a re-watch

Dial M for Murder is the weakest here. And Rope is the better adaptation of a British stage play. And Hitchcock was good before the 40s.

"Notorious" is the obvious oversight here as it's easily one of Hitchcock's 10 best. I would replace "Dial M for Murder" and "Rope" with "Notorious" and any one of several other excellent films.

I havw seen ALL Hitchcock's films (some many times) with one exception - a musical he directed in his English years called "Waltzes from Vienna." I am sorry that you have neglected all his years in England. The original "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "The 39 Steps" are surely outstanding - and so is "Young and Innocent". Of his American years, I'd choose as his very best "Strangers in a Train", "Vertigo" and "Notorious".

Why do so many young people choose Psycho as their #1? 1. Vertigo 2. Rear Window 3. North by Northwest 4. Strangers on a Train 5. The Birds 6. Psycho 7. Rope 8. Rebecca 9. The Man Who Knew too Much 10. Dial M for Murder 11. Notorious 12. To Catch a Thief Its a close call between Vertigo and Rear Window.
