From our album "Naysayer", available now on all streaming services and on CD: bit.ly/2It18qd
Lyrics:
On the banks of the Missouri
Annie Washed up in the clay
And they took her to her father
Told him it was John McCrae
Now I'm running through the badlands
Covering my tracks
Northward toward Dakota
With the devil on my back
Chorus:
Oh, the river flows
To our immortal home
Oh Annie, oh my soul
Well I took her down by the stream side
For to make that girl my bride
But in the fold of her pretty white dress
Lay her father's bowie knife
Well she pulled that steel blade on me
Told me she would take my life
So I pushed her into the river
She went under with tide
Chorus
Well the hound dogs they overtook me
40 miles past Hqarding town
and I told that young Douglas sherriff,
"Boy, you'd better shoot me now."
He said "Poor Johnny, by my orders
your life I cannot take.
But I'll be smiling at your hanging
when they lay you in the grave."
Chorus
I am standing at the gallows
And the scaffold it is high
And the hangman asked my last words
before I'm condemned to die
So I begged God, "Don't forgive me
for the trouble I have sown
for I'll soon see my pretty Annie
in the hell fire down below."
Chorus

I just want to start off by saying how genuinely amazing this piece is. It is simply beautiful, you guys have such genuine and raw talent that isn't often found in musicians anymore. I have listened to this song again and again and each time I do it just gets better and better. I'm sitting my final exams at the moment and your music lifts my spirits in an incredibly stressful time which i can tell you is much needed! You guys are awesome, keep filling this platform with the spirit and soul it needs. Thank you for your brilliant music, we all appreciate it.

Turner & McKee needs to be a thing, and you need to take it on the road. I love how you’re keeping folk music alive by actually writing and performing real folk music. Songs about the hangman’s scaffold and songs about swiping right, but it all fits and it works. You two gents are a force of nature.

You guys need to have WAY more fame! If you can write a song that sounds like Bob Dylan while playing like Simon and Garfunkel with TIGHT harmony, you should win a Grammy or something. This should’ve been an instant classic. Also, Josh is a genius with the capo on the 14th fret for the octave. And Carson’s rich voice reminds me a little bit of Elvis. P.s. the lyrics almost made me cry but I don’t why. Can my band open for you please?

I thought the same thing. The double inlay on the 7th fret threw me off and I thought "Damn, how can even get his hand in there with the capo on 14." But then I counted the frets and saw it's 9th.

John McCrae is the name of a Canadian hero. He was a medical doctor and soldier who wrote the most famous poem to come out of the First World War, “In Flanders’ Fields.” The school around the corner from my house is named for him. There is also a national historical site down the street at his childhood home here in Guelph, Ontario.
