What a joy to hear you play this at the end of last night's concert (17 April 2016), and my very favourite Zigeunerweisen as well - couldn't believe my luck! Thank you, Joshua :)

It has been a year or so since I last saw and heard this wonderful video. First saw it about 20 years ago. So incredible,. Wish I understood the story behind it. Karen Black is an added bonus. Yippee!!

I know from research it was during Bell's younger years, the video speaks for itself if you piece together the key nuances. This was before Bell upgraded instruments, it was the instrument he first learned on and played with Josef gingold from what I gathered. After his Carnegie debut and the release of The Red Violin is when the Tom Taylor strad was shown. Later in 2001 he got the huberman Gibson strad for 4 million. Dude jokingly told him I'll sell it to you for four, Bell played it at a concert before the auction, sold his strad for 2 mil and then bought the violin he plays on today. The famous stolen strad.

Is he using a carbon fiber violin?

I believe he was using 1 of 2 existing "cornerless" Stradivaris at the time.
