Establishing your lights first keeps you from establishing false highlights. It is a very solid way to paint most anything, light to dark. If you need to lighten a light plane you can always use a catch light, the little flickering touches of light. Walnut oil is lighter and thinner but I have found it dries slower.

Thank you, very nice demo. I am glad you are using genuine lead white. I believe it’s much better than titanium white and is not over powering other colors. One big benefit is it helps drying other colors too. Where as titanium white is very slow drying.

I've been watching loads of videos under lockdown and when you started with the lighter values, I was like dang this is my guy! Most instruction that I've seen was to put in the darks first and I've ended up with mud. I feel free again, thank you! Love your work too by the way!

It is a relief to see a painter that puts reasonable amounts of paint in their pallete, opposed to some that put enough paint to cover a wall from the very start :P

If the palette is made of transparent plexiglass or glass - then why not put under it a piece of canvas or paper tinted in the same color as the panel? It makes it much easier to judge mixing color during the process of putting underpainting. By the way - a great lesson, a very good teacher. Thank you for sharing!

I remember my old school days taking arts of painting portraits . That I use to make overlays for my project. My teacher told me that I’m not learning by doing so instead I’m cheating so I stop and go for the real learning process. Because here you have to have computer, camera, printer printing paper also you have to learn photoshop editing .no problem if you have all this . Sorry learning from old Rembrandt.

Kaz Thibodeau Thank you that’s very kind. I ended up buying this one. They sent me a promo code (20%) after I sent them an email. It is still very expensive but it has proven to be worth it. It’s more than 10 hours. He is very talented artist and teacher. I will probably buy the other one. Don’t know when though since this one burnt a hole in my pocket. hehe Next year I guess. Thank you again for taking the time.

This feels kind of tricky as it feels not fair for to those who bought the tutorial for almost 200 dollars. I have bought the joshua larock tutorial on Streamline artvideo and the organisation is providing around 1/3 of the tutorial for free via this video on youtube. With 1/3 I mean the time he is effectively painting, which is the most important time of the tutorial of course.

That was a really painful jab at self taught artists. Trying not to let that final couple minutes get me down. Not sure the value of creating this kind of video when you hold that opinion of self learning.
@df6628
@df6628 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob Benjamin don’t let it get you down. Draw as much as possible. Train your eye to see shapes and values and learn the different types of light. Painting is just drawing with color. There’s a ton of good resources online and at your local library (I found a few really good Richard Schmid books at my tiny little local library). And after all, the very first artist was self taught!

What he said was true. Be honest with yourself and enroll at his alma mater Grand Central Atelier online classes in realtime via zoom. Classes are only $400.00 10 week courses, but you still won't enroll will you? That's the problem with you ''self taught'' guys, never applying yourselves having shitty art and being content with mediocrity

@@AmerSignLang3 Not as amazing as painting gay ''bears" with no knowledge of light,form, composition or anatomy. I would mention taste, but that can't be taught. Fortunately for you the former can, look at Grand Central Atelier,Angel Academy, Florence Academy compare your work to that. Don't compare your work to what's surrounding you in your little bubble in butt fuck Texas, but in your little shit stain of a city you probably are considered good.
