Joshua did have a big place in his heart to fill. Claudia's love was genuine and he knew what love was like. His dad had other women take his place, but he never said negative words to Joshua. He never raised his voice at him or raised his hand to him. Had he been like that Joshua would have been quite unhappy and he'd know depression. The mom truly loved her son and able to build the mom and son bonding.

The father professes his love for his son , he professed being devoted to his care but it was ego driven . His ego had been offended by being dumped by a very young mother from a very different social background . She was and still at the end of the movie, way of her depth . The father , self centred man , I’d almost say “abuses “ his son by denying him the normality of having any feelings , eg nothing of sentiment or childhood magic, due to his bruised ego. He couldn’t cope , so denied his son the magic of friends and childhood , a loving childhood . It’s a pity that “Claudia “ was not awarded , at the very least , some official ongoing position in the little boy’s life , as a guardian /godmother responsible for providing the necessary, love and pastoral care which every child needs . He love and constancy could have been of immeasurable benefit to the child as he contended with two such inadequate parents and the loyalty he felt he owed them . A self centred father and a mother who was still unstable and immature . Plus , her lack of education in contrast to her son is too much for a child where the father is so egotistical, insensitive and thoroughly spoilt. IMO

I understand that unconditional love is to love, no matter what the other´s response may be. It´s a very mature love; perfect. But love can be imperfect, too. As long as it is, it´s all right.
