Hi there, I tried to write down the question and time from the recruiter. Hope this information would help! 2:57 01. Tell me about the current work you're doing? 3:52 02. What specific languages are you working with? 4:07 03. What would you consider your strongest skill? 4:27 04. How do you see youself and your skills? Full stack? Front end? 5:12 05. Are you more of a front end developer? Do you get excited by backend work as well? 5:52 06. How are you with computer science fundamental? 6:17 07. Are you interested in developing that skill more (CS fundamental) ? Are you comfortable being tested in those skills? 7:01 08. What are your favorite types of projects to work on? 8:04 09. Whats important to you in the roles you're in? 8:43 10. Any projects at google you're excited to work on? And thanks Joshua for recording this awesome video, which helps me a lot in preparing the phone interview of Google SE next week!

Maybe it's different for others, but I found that being too honest in an interview doesn't end with good results. They just want to know that you can do the job at a high level, and it's best to make yourself look as efficient and reliable as possible. I learned this by not getting hired when being 100%, thinking it would get me far.

My brother was hired at PMI and the interviewer put high consideration in his profile despite his lack of academic credentials, he showed efficiency and reliability. He was able to answer any question straight to the point. That's not about making laugh the interviewer. You won't date the person. If so, you had better get a life instead of a job.

I interviewed at Google a while back and it was very similar this. First interview super laid back and relaxed. Nearly everyone passes this interview unless they find a red flag like you won’t relocate. Second interview is an easy fizz buzz ish problem. Reverse a string in place... they also might ask you a question about promises or closure, or hoisting. Easy JavaScript 101 problems. If you make it on site, you’ll need to grind leetcode, cracking the coding interview , algorithms etc to have any chance. You might get lucky and get an easy problem but probably not . Certainly be able to answer basic rest server client architecture type questions

I tried to use this strategy in one of my recent interview but the interview went totally the other way. I guess the interviewer didn’t like me trying to take over the interview. At the end of the interview I asked questions about the company and most of his answer were like its my way or the highway. Well, I’m sad and happy at the same time. I’m sad because I didn’t got the job. And, I’m happy because THANK GOD I didn’t got a job in company with a boss like that. It would have been a nightmare.

Sounds like a terrible interview. Most interviewers intentionally leave space for questions and if you don't ask, that's usually frownes upon, of you aren't asking questions it can be construed as not really having an interest.

I am going on a limb here and saying that you were interviewing in India. And I totally agree with you, most people who interview like to be in control which I don't understand. How is the person supposed to show initiative and interest if you don't give them a chance to run the interview. I am not saying that interviewers should completely let go but there should be some room for originality. However there are some cool people who are able to get the information that they need (mostly technical) along with getting to know you which is where most of the originality comes into play

Having gone through the Google interview process, every coding problem / technical interview question I had made it clear that Google isn't particularly concerned with the various workflows or stacks in which you're most productive, but your ability to conceptualize solutions to problems in terms of CS fundamentals. Efficient solutions to the questions I was asked involved modified breadth-first search, self-balancing trees, search tries, recursions or stacks/queues, etc. No "trivia" type questions, like what color will this HTML element be given these 4 competing CSS rules.
@pnw_dev7934

@Hilbert França Google actually sends offers to competitive programmers, see kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJqirM58scnIpX0.html. Like others said, they're most interested in CS and algorithms. It's pretty common for big companies. Mostly it's not 5 different guys grilling you for one position. Usually they've got 5 different teams/departments that have a need for the same position and so you'll interview with all of them. If one team likes you, then you'll get an offer. If you're really good, then you'll have multiple teams fighting each other for your services and you get to decide which team you want to work with.

Advice for anyone watching this now: What I'm about to say sucks but unfortunately it is what it is. These MANGA companies pay anywhere from $180k - $300k TC (or more), so they ask very specific questions and have multiple rounds of interviews to analyze your technical, communication, and behavioral skills. Do NOT be brutally honest about things. If you keep mentioning negatives or talk poorly about prior employers/projects, they probably won't move you onto the next round. You could mention some struggles but they can't be super bad and you definitely need to have positive or great outcomes. People spend months to years preparing for interviews at a MANGA company so you definitely need to have had mapped out answers to questions you'll expect to get. This may even require you to create some believable stories where you can demonstrate core values/principles that the MANGA company follows. You also need to know Data Structures and Algorithms (possibly System Design as well) when you get to the technical interview rounds so make sure you're prepared for this since you'll probably be coding in-front of an experienced Google SWE (or higher position). The Josh today who wouldn't want to work for anyone would definitely laugh and make fun of Google (and the other companies) for all the corporate BS that goes into their interview process (and I would agree as well on that). Edit: Also yes it's nice that a recruiter from these top paying companies reach out to you but they're mostly looking out for themselves. They usually send the same generic message/email to like 100+ people so that if 1 or the few applicants get into the company, it looks better for them and they also get a big fat referral bonus (tech companies sometimes pay a few thousand per referral of a person who gets in and accepts the offer).

I interviewed at Google not long ago. The first phone interview with recruiter was similar to this but also has some technical questions where you have answers options, pretty laid-back but it's definitely a filter for completely non-relevant persons. Then you have a screening interview with an engineer and you have to write code, I can say it's a medium difficulty problem (not fizzbuzz or reversing string in place, that's kind of easy), not so easy and not so hard, pretty similar to what you can get from leetcode and cracking the coding interview. The onsite is a real tough, 5 sections: 4 coding and 1 is non-abstract large system design. Coding sections are pretty the same as leetcode can offer but it's more like in an advanced category of algorithms (graphs, dynamic programming and so on) and NALSD was a completely new and challenging experience for me. Btw, there are training sessions before each stage so they give you a hint what to expect and it's very helpful and thoughtful.

lol at mentioning stackoverflow... Not something you want to do. The industry wants to pretend none of us use it even though a lot of people do. Programming for most people is just about knowing the language (i.e. syntax, best practices etc). Only the top % of developers can really think in algorithms all day All these interviews are annoying as hell man, the fact that google has to sort give you a list of places you can use to study is stupid to me. Acing a job interview at google is basically like an exam. It's like studying for the MCAT or something for 4-6 months and then forgetting most of that stuff... With that being said, there are genuinely brilliant programmers who think and live by algorithms but the truth is, in my experience, that most developers are not that

Just completed my first screening interview with google as well. Went to bootcamp, so lucking the CS side of the interview process and going for front end position (JS as a test language). I don’t even know if it’s even worth spending time working/preparing for that. They told me they have some kind of mock interview so going to do that next month. Let’s see and good luck with yours brother.

I think it's almost impossible to test a person's skill level by asking them on the phone, so it was good you asked what's the AI project look like. Personally she dives deep into it probably cuz it's the hottest new thing, but boy you can tell she was fishing for something for you to say that she could latch on and say "this guy's the one standout". It's really what these software recruiters r looking for only in these first interviews, the competency of course but mainly any sort of uniqueness you bring, but iunno if they can even qualify to give such judgement at least from her tone and stutter, I guess she did grt a lot out of your personality traits, but technically she was spinning in circles and you were like "aite.." lol EDIT: Btw funny reason I clicked besides I had been recommended by youtube for job interview stuff was in the thumbnail I had u mistaken for connor mcdavid the hockey gaud since I'm Canadian Xd

Jake was fairly honest and blunt throughout his entire interview. Which to be honest you shouldn't do it works for some people but not everyone. I tend to embellish my experience or fill in gaps and make up a good story. That's what they want to hear. HR or whoever doesn't care about your financial struggles or why you couldn't obtain this credential or got fired.(It will make you look unprofessional and desperate they are people too. It's always best to look for jobs while employed as if you're "taken" and they want you more.) I tend to tell the truth about one thing ( I did get fired from a job recently but instead turned it into I'm looking for a different opportunity something more challenging it didn't turn out the way I thought. Usually, I've gotten to the second interview but then wouldn't do the second interview due to some other issue. Even after the job offer due to covid they might require vaccinations or the jobs really not wfm or they ghosted me. Never ever tell a interviewer you were fired, or that your obtaining credentials unless it's specifically required in the job post and have asked/ don't give more information then requested you will put your foot in your own mouth. This past year 1/2 I've had multiple interviews and 80% success rate but with the pandemic and new flakey and ghosting protocols jobs aren't guaranteed. (At least in my state)

6:33 - please don't say that to a technical person though. I am an interviewer at work and saying stuff like that just makes you seem incompetent. Experienced developers read docs, they don't read Stackoverflow... We find very often wrong or partially incorrect accepted answers on Stackoverflow, so it should not be your source of information. Stackoverflow is also the reason we find horrible code pushed for review...
