joshua. Can’t wait! I started lessons at age 16- played for a while, jumping around trying to be a female Randy Rhoads. Ha ha. Then I dropped it altogether. But now as a lonely graduate student, I find myself drawn back to playing classical. It really keeps me sane! Fingers aren’t quite “flying” yet...well, not on my right hand anyway.

A lot of good advice here and clear guidance on how to execute the intro and beginning melody of a magnificent piece that so many guitarist take great liberties with. We have all heard the super fast so called virtuosic approaches to this music that bear little resemblance to what Tarrega had written and in some regards we have been conned into thinking that this is what we should aim for ourselves. Calming things down and paying greater attention to the wonderful subtleties both rhythmically and melodically does the genius of the composer more justice and leads to deeper understanding and appreciation of this piece. Thank you for showing this it has opened my eyes and ears and has started me off on a new adventure!

Josh, a true teacher has the humility to learn form others and then openly share with his students. I love this piece and play it as a favorite. I am amazed by the never ending journey (at our respective levels) of guitar that we have embarked upon - there is so much to learn. You are a terrific teacher - many thanks for teaching us not just the pieces, but the humility it takes to achieve greatness!

Andrew! It's been quite some time. Actually it's funny you should comment here as I opened up my old email account and saw an email from you about an Xmas gift a few days ago. I don't know why emails keep going to that address but I'll have to try to setup an auto-redirect or something. There is so much to learn and seemingly so little time to learn it all. For me (us) the joy is in the learning and the discovery of something hitherto unknown. I am truly happy to share this and also to acknowledge Andrea for allowing me to use his video in such a way. Truly a gift to all that subscribe to this channel.

Hi John! It was great that Andrea agreed to me sharing this. He seems like such a nice, genuine, and generous chap. I'm hoping to work something out with the Tonebase team and maybe make this a regular thing on the channel where virtuosi such as Andrea critique my playing and then I share out the lesson in a 'reactive' way with you all. I know it will benefit so many people that watch the channel not only technically but also hopefully in a way that encourages people to keep learning and broadening their knowledge base.

Im very indebted to you for where Im at with guitar Josh, Im a guitarist of almost 10 years but stopped progressing once I knew how to play chord progressions like many guitarists do. At the start of the first quarantine I stumbled across Brandon Ackers channel, if you dont know him I would highly recommend checking him out as he is a fantastic guitarist with a brilliant interpretation of Capricho Arabe. I had never had a huge interest in flamenco and classical guitar before then, but I found your channel and learned Capricho Arabe and Chopin nocturne in Eb and was instantly hooked on classical guitar. I bought my first proper nylon string classical a few months later in December, (a yamaha CG192SF) and Ive never had as much fun with guitar as I am having now. Ive also progressed further in the past year with all the free time than any other year of my life. Thanks for these videos, we are very grateful for the excellent resource. I don't see that much of what Andrea stated is so much improving anything. He is in my view, a very talented and incredible performer, but this piece is so much a common part of every players repertoire that slight differences are only a matter of taste. There is nothing wrong with putting some of your own individual interpretation on this, even to the extreme. It is a fun piece to play and to hear, but there is no right and wrong as long as the notes are respected. I do like the cello analogy though!

@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Francesco. This lesson cost US$35. I'm not sure if different guitarists charge different rates but that is the fee that I received from Tonebase. I was supposed to receive a 20% discount because I'm a premium member but when I received the invoice it said discount N/A. I don't know why the discount wasn't applied, and when I asked the guys at Tonebase about it but they never responded about the missing discount. I'm thinking it's early days and they haven't exactly figured out how to apply an automatic discount. I run my own website and things can get quite complicated with the payment systems and backend. The lesson isn't truly interactive. You film yourself playing and then send it to your chosen expert and they will watch it and then offer suggestions via a video that they make. I hope that helps and thanks for your feedback.

Despite the coolness of this video it hasn't garnered much attention.

Thanks for sharing this Josh. I will say this, and it will show my inexperience, but @ 3:33, I prefer your way. Ok, I get that its incorrect but to me its more ... melodic. Many times I see people take artistic liberty or place in their own expression for the music. For the songs I am very familiar with often I find I am critical of their artistic licence. If you take a piece, or a portion of a piece and do it well, making it your own, that seems to sate my OCD. Again, @ 10:22, the hammer on F to the B flat sounds very nice to my ears even though its incorrect. @ 16:55 putting emphasis on the A, I really didnt know either. I play it more like you but I use a ... vibrato/bend to fake the sound. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Always nice to know the really great guitarists need help as well.

Hey it's been awhile. I think your last comment was back when I release my video on privatisation. I hope you're doing well. How do you do a vibrato/bend to fake the sound? I was trying to envisage that in my head but I couldn't. I'm happy to share all of this and also to let people know that you're never too good to be able to take advice from someone else :)

The easiest way to describe it is BB King, vibrato bend. Thats where I learned it and its just kind of stuck.

Hey Josh, Tatyana Ryzhkova .. is obviously no slouch, ahem, she pauses / appegiates ( or what ever the word is ) the first piece that bloke hauled you up about. Surely interpretation is ... interpretation?

She is no slouch that's for sure.

Very nice. however I think the biggest difference between Andrea and yourself is that you are on a $1600 guitar and he is (probably) on a very awesome $5k plus guitar. Especially he softer played just sound so much more articulated on his instument (and so much less so on my $500 guitar, not that i am anywhere near your or Andrea's skill level of course). This may partly be the sound recording equipment of course also. I actually like the way you do the first segment at least as much as Andrea does his.

I'm honestly very flattered that you would say that Ralfy. Come to think of it I don't know what guitar Andrea is playing. I wish it was just the guitar that was the difference but he is definitely a cut above my level. I probably have the edge in the recording too as I used a camera-mounted mic, a bit of compression, and some light cathedral reverb when I mixed my version of Capricho Arabe whereas it looks like Andrea was recording using his smartphone!

Oh I am sure that Andrea is a cut above the level of most guitarists including even the very best. Then again can he belt out a passable rendition of "Summer Loving" or whatever an inebriated Japanese wedding guest wants to hear a rendition of like you can? You know as well, and probably better, as me that blokes like Andrea play on $10- 20k custom jobbies or some historical guitar with a 20-30k pricetag. Or maybe more? It seems Andrea plays on guitars made by a Belgian chap named Walter Verreydt. His guitars are in the "price on request" range . I would venture that if they put a $10k custom luthier's job in your hand you would sound a lot closer to Andrea than with your nice high end mass produced guitar. Bradford at "thisisclassicalguitar" has a review of the Cordoba C12 and compares it to his own $5k luthier's job. The C12 acquits itself well but the difference is still quite remarkable.

Hahaha hmm possibly not. My international experience of touring has probably been vastly different to Andrea's. Seedy bars, cigar puffing patrons and the like! I do know what you mean about guitars making a significant difference to the overall sound. I'm having one made in New Zealand by Rodney Steadall. Let's see how I sound after that beauty is in my hands! Bradford has an excellent channel. I do enjoy his guitar reviews.

Why all the interruptions? Just please let Andre teach. We really don’t need you to reiterate everything Andre says and does. A summary at the end with what you learned would suffice! Thanks for posting

My video - my style. Most people appreciate the way I explain it although I guess some high-level players like you probably don't need me to break it down and I can see how that might be annoying.
