The renaissance chanson Mille Regretz, composed by the incomparable Josquin des Prez, performed by Bruce Dickey & Hanneke van Proosdij, with divisions in the style of Ganassi and Bassano. Video from the Voices of Music Great Artists series, October, 2012.
Mille regretz was one of the most famous compositions of the renaissance, and was called "Canción del Emperador", the song of the emperor, by the Spanish composer Narváez as it was reputedly the favorite of Charles the V. Josquin's composition is a perfect miniature of contrapuntal simplicity and elegance, ending with a brief litany in declamatory style on the text "brief mes jours definer", "so soon my days will end."
In this performance, Bruce Dickey recreates the art of renaissance and early baroque ornamentation: first, the original chanson is performed, with the cornetto sounding the treble and the other parts played by the organ; next, two versions are performed using original techniques of ornamentation, with an interlude for solo organ.
Pitch and temperament are a vital part of the sound of this music. This video was recorded at the pitch of 467 Hz in quarter comma meantone.
For more information on the cornetto, we recommend this interview with Bruce Dickey

What an absolutely beautiful sound!!! Mr. Dickey is certainly the greatest cornettist today. I've always enjoyed his performances and have his CD's. His beautiful playing shows why the early Baroque composers considered the cornet to on par with the violin. Just as beautiful a tone and expressive as a well played violin. Thanks much for this video!

The pure sound and the skillful articulation fill me with wonder - I'm learning to play the cornetto and so far can only imitate the moaning of a bad tempered bull suffering with severe indigestion. I return to this video to give me the impetus to keep trying. Beautiful music, lovely sound and marvelous playing by both cornettist and organist.

He uses two cornetti for these videos: a three-piece straight cornetto made by Henri Gohin of Paris (seen here), and a curved cornetto made by Matthew Jennejohn of Montreal, Quebec (the Palestrina video). Both are pitched at "A"=465 Hz..

The cornett probably is THE sound of Renaissance. I wonder if the true reason why it disappeared was the end of Renaissance, an Era whose sound embodied so tightly, probably even too tightly for the instrument's own good...

@AlainNaigeon
@AlainNaigeon 4 жыл бұрын
@@aaaarghgl No. The so called "mute" cornet hasn't an external mouthpiece, its mouthpiece is designed in the wood of the instrument (and therefore cannot be changed). It's perhaps the reason why it has a softer sound (though I'm not sure to understand why).

absolutely wonderful performance! I am curious about one thing: I see musicians like Mr. Dickey sometimes play a straight cornett (I am not referring to a mute cornett) instead of the more common curved design. Is there any practical difference (tone quality, easiness of playing etc.) or is it just a design and aesthetic choice by the maker? Would it make any difference for a beginner? Thanks in advance to anyone who would reply!

Wonderful work, and fine mastery of a very cranky instrument. I have a question: these variations are much like divisions, for example for lute on the songs of Dowland, of a much later time. Would Josquin's songs have had something similar applied? I 'd love to see or hear anything about it.
@VoicesofMusic
@VoicesofMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Divisions appear very early on in the history of music, such as the roulades in some of Dufay's works. With the advent of music printing, lute and keyboard versions appeared with extensive divisions of works by Josquin & Isaac, among others. Note that it is unlikely that Dowland wrote any divisions at all, as he regarded it as unbalancing the counterpoint, although his contemporaries certainly did.
