Jota Manilena was original research of Lucrecia Urtula, National Artist for Dance (1988) of Bayanihan. It became part of ROFG's growing repertoire when Ramon Obusan, National Artist for Dance (2006) taught this to his group. This version of Jota Manilena is the interpretation of Ramon Obusan. This is not the version by Lucrecia Urtula. It is also interesting to note that there is a little differences between the two. As what i have noticed, the version of Ramon Obusan became more popular to many dance group existing in the Philippines while there are some remnants of Urtula's version in many dance group in US. Some of the founders of US based dance troupes are used to be part of Bayanihan. Jota Manilena was always been a part of cultural programs of many folk dance troupe in the Philippines such as Kislap Sining of PNU while Bayanihan no longer used this dance in many of their repertoires since the early 80s Currently, i am looking and researching on the Bayanihan's version. There is a big problem because most of their performance was not recorded locally since this dance was popularized by Bayanihan from 1970 to 1973. I had seen one which was filmed in 1996 but it was a medley so i didnt able to saw their whole version. I hope that one day i will able to see their version. That is one of my greatest dream.

Though I love ROFG much more than Bayanihan; I disgree that this is signature ROFG piece. It's Bayanihan's. The music of the Jota de Manila was even part of Bayanihan's 1960 album. It was already a part of Bayanihan's repertoire even before ROFG was formed in 1972.

only because the king of Spain don't want all of the Filipinos to learn their language... instead, they were the ones to know the local dialects..... so that they could understand the Filipinos

That idiot Miguel has no respect in our culture, just imagined 360 years or more of Spanish colonization in the Philippines, of course we could adapt the Spanish culture, traditions, the big influence in the society during those years. He needs to do some research, his defense is to distort and degrade our cultures with full of deception. He can’t even speak a word of Spanish. El vive en su propia reclusion.

The polka, although from Central Europe, was no doubt already in Mexico and Spain - and the Filipinos imitated it, they didn't "bring it from Poland" as you claim. The "indios" (a misnomer) weren't very protected by the Spanish Queen - at least not nearly as much as the natives in the Americas. Asian blood wasn't welcome in Spanish circles, although Amerindian blood was.

Never have "Eurasian" ever equalled 10% of the pop. in the Phil.'s... They've always been a small group and if anything were even smaller back then. Yes, obviously those in the "principalia" (nobodies in Spain/Latin America) had no choice but to try to imitate nobility and the Spanish. That's the point.

in the philippines, we celebrate our heritage from spain. deal with it. when spain came to the philippines, instead of destroying the native culture and erasing it from the face of the earth as they did in south america, in the philippines they learned the value of native culture; hence, they preserved our native culture and married it to theirs. so we have dances with spanish influence, yet the element of love and passion which is deep within filipino culture is still visible; the castanets were made of local materials. we don't claim to be SPANISH nor LATIN AMERICANS, but you cannot erase the historical fact that philippines is one of the HISPANIC nations of this world. the king of spain during the time of colonization wanted to share spain's culture and heritage to all her colonies. if the king is willing to share, why would we even bother about your unmerited owning of spanish culture. deal with it, the next generation of filipinos will continue to dance these beautiful folk dances that we learned during the time of the spanish empire. we are not welcomed, you say, by spain? tell you the truth - only the philippines bear the name of king Philip - one of the greatest kings of spain. this privilege does not seem to be welcoming, right?

Your points are clear, yet you miss it. They were not merely adopted, but either forced or taken up to be more like the 'conquerors'. Many who observed those traditions did it because it made them feel less filipino and more "Hispanic" - which they weren't.

That's why these flips are COPYING Mexico? They dance to music that was first FROM Mexico, not Spain. The Philippines was RULED THROUGH MEXICOP CITY. Try harder.

The rondalla, jota is directly associated to Spain. Lol Spain is not just Flamenco. There's nothing Mexican about this. Well, true enough. There are Philippine folk dances adopted from México, but the Jota is not one of them. And guess what? Mexico was also a Spanish territory. Don't jump up on such unbased conclusion. In fact, if you think that the Philippines are mere copycats, then we could also tell that to Mexicans. Do outmost research first before whining and spurring up ignorance. Maybe us, Filipinos would give your remarks back, TRY HARDER.
