I love hearing how others journal and what they journal about. I love the idea of memory keeping journaling and have been doing that for about 2 years . But I realized I need someplace else to write down my thoughts, feelings, and ideas so now I keep a second journal for that. I wish it hadn’t taken me so long to do this and wish I had been journaling through my life.

I like the ideas you present in this video of things to include in our journals, but I have to be honest that the reason I started journaling years ago is because I didn’t want to “lost” my life; several days would go by and I would completely forget what I had done with them, so I started recording something most days to document things I wanted to remember about them. (I find it really useful to be able to go back and search for events, to refresh my memory as I get older.) This also turned into my “gratitude journal”, in which I try to find 3 things each day about which to be grateful, to reset my perspective. I tried typing my journal for a while, and found that I was more prolific (I’m a pretty fast typist), I didn’t find the process nearly as satisfying (although certainly easier to search!) So I’m back to writing, but with a nicer pen (a Pilot E95s, which is a joy, since it’s so lightweight and just glides; I can write pages and pages), which is more rewarding. It helps me untangle my thoughts, and gives me some needed self-talk.

This is a very good point and thank you for underlining it. I do this as well. I wanted to hold onto events and details and to be able to refer back to them. Thank you for an excellent comment.

I am that person who burns my journals. I will keep them for a few years, skim them over and then have a bonfire with them. For me they are processing pages and so very personal. When I burn them I feel this incredible release. I have a shoebox full of sweet memories or art pages I really like.

I have journals from 1972 when I was 11 years old and have kept them on and off my entire life. I am now 62. The insights I get on my youth and what was going on now that I can see it through the eyes of an adult are startling. It is like reliving my childhood but the one that it actually was, not the innocent and naive way I experienced it the first time. I love journaling. The act of dating the page and pouring out my thoughts proves to my own self that I exist in this time and space.

Your distinction between a journal and a diary makes me think of a simple system I use: a large book and a small book. Small book is my everyday notebook, and has my objectives for the day, notes, writing exercises, and whatever else catches my attention. I try to style it after the Bullet Journal method, but it only has a passing resemblance to it. Large book is for longer thoughts and observations.

Hi Hemingway. I really enjoyed watching this video. I admire your photographic skills. Some of the old leather bindings were beautiful and nice to see a great selection of pens. I suspect your Kaweco Brass Sport could be one of your favourite pens for journaling. You have managed to combine some lovely video footage with quite a dramatic soundtrack. I have the feeling you are something of a perfectionist in life. I watch many videos about keeping a journal, mainly because I want to but cannot quite convince myself I have something meaningful to say. I see some people, mostly ladies, enjoying decorating their journals with stickers, tape, pictures and much more ephemera. That style is not for me. One of my interests is collecting old books, much like yourself. I enjoy reading books of diaries, collections of letters and journals written by people like Samuel Johnson, Pepys etc. Yet, I cannot put my own life down in words. I have tried many times but it only lasts at best for a week or two. I will watch your video again and somehow try to be inspired by your good example.

Hello David, thanks for the kind comment. I do try to put a good product out there. I appreciate that you have noticed. Thank you. I am sure that you could make an interesting journal of ideas. Like you, I don’t decorate or write for its own sake. People recopy books and whatnot. That is not for me. You are a very thoughtful person who writes quite well. I am sure there are vast internal landscapes for you to explore. Let me know if I can help and stay well.

This is very good. I started to journal this year and you've been doing it for so many years. I think I will continue with it. What I do is just score myself based on some markers like sleep, focus, direction throughout the day and progress made and give myself an overall score in work and other things I do. I also do a tally at the end of the week and draw a graph to see how consistent I was. I should do a monthly catchup also.

Thanks for a thoughtful video that has prompted some self-reflection. I’ve journaled off and on for 50 years, but the frequency increased with the Covid lockdown, and my recuperation from Covid. I used that time to practice penmanship, which had deteriorated over the years and is now much more legible, and to rediscover my attraction to fountain pens. Hand writing in a journal slows down my thoughts, and fosters deeper reflection than simply thinking would. The act of writing intentionally is pleasurable,even if I am not recording “deep thoughts.” In fact, I have come to believe that simply describing the ephemera of daily life is valuable to me. Trying to describe the shade of gray in the overcast sky, or the noises that surround me in the city, for example, helps me to understand what I notice (and what I seldom notice), and this tells me about myself and how I approach life. I think, in journaling, that it is a mistake to wait until one has something to say. Writing will reveal oneself to oneself, even if is only bemoaning a clogged sink!

I've been journaling a lot more lately and even writing in a book that has a lot of writing prompts in it. I was just curious about something. Anything Rhodia, Claire Fontaine, or Ayush as well. All very good. Sadly, Moleskine is pretty awful.

Thank you for this! I just subscribed the other day, so youtube keeps putting your older videos in front of my eyes, and I can't resist the allure of your beautiful journals and chill vibe. I've been keeping a nightly page-a-diary for over 30 years. It is usually just the events of the day with the occasional rant or observation thrown in. I lost my brother to cancer a year and a half ago, around the time I started keeping morning pages (which I learned about from someone in a fountain pen group). It was therapeutic to have a place to rage, to grieve, to work through the loss and the huge life changes. Morning pages are basically a stream of consciousness, which can be useful, but I've learned that trying to confine yourself to what other people think you should include in a journal is quite limiting. Right now I have separate books for morning pages, projects, sketches, book reviews, goals and to do's, quotes that speak to me, work... I'm thinking that I will eventually merge a lot of these into one "book of my life." I think having so many is partly due to the urge to use new notebooks! I will say that keeping morning pages did really help me see how my undiagnosed but obvious ADHD has really limited my potential, and has forced me to find strategies that work for me. And looking back through older journals and seeing how long ago I started a project that I still haven't finished, despite my initial enthusiasm, is a real wake-up call! Thank you for your beautiful, thoughtful, and heartfelt videos.

Great video about this! I've been debating journaling but leaning towards doing it, especially since I have about 15 fountain pens that I don't use much. Wanted to ask you this...I just got a bottle of Noodler's 54th Massachusetts ink today, I inked it up in my TWSBI Vac and I love it. Have you heard anything bad about these inks as far as causing damage to pens? The only one I have seen that can do that is Baystate Blue but everything else seems to be ok judging from the reviews I have read. Thanks for what you do! Really admire your videos!
@HemingwayJones
@HemingwayJones 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brandon! I have heard rumors of Noodler’s damaging pens. I would check his Ph content. I usually don’t worry about these things. Inks are fairly corrosive, but I think it would take a lot to damage a TWSBI. The plunger may be the weak point. I’ve heard Nathan of Noodler’s pushing back on these rumors. Wish you all the best.

@@HemingwayJones I try not to restrain myself much for a few reasons. One is my wife and kids would probably not read all my writings. Another is that I like the idea that they will find some interesting things about me that they didn’t know previously. I do restrain myself when it comes to commenting about others. I may talk about how I feel but without mentioning details about why. Cheers.

Thanks for this video, HJ. I journal too, and in my case, journaling has helped me deal with brain cancer and the resulting health problems the cancer and the chemotherapy have caused me. Journaling has helped me retain my sanity, and I have managed to deal with my health-related crisis' without suffering a jot of depression or anxiety or any other psychological problems. I do have a question for you though. At 2.09 in the video, you are seen journaling in a large journal, my question being what kind of journal are you using? I have not had good luck finding a blank journal like the big journal you are using. Thank you very much, HJ, keep up the great work producing these superb videos. Thank you.

Hello Wolverine! Thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story. It is amazing that you made it through that and truly heroic. I am sure you have a lot to say in your journal. So, yes, that is my current journal that I am using now and it’s from Barnes and Noble. And for what it is, it is pretty great: inexpensive at $60, decent paper (Florentina) and is quite large. I love that it looks Medieval. It’s $60 on their website. The only bad thing is that it splays and quickly and there is nothing to do about it. I think it makes it even more vintage, but you should know.

I've been writing memories/memoirs since the sixties as a teenaged boy. I still do--have written around 25 pages of legal pad in the last couple of days. People, please don't get all wrapped up in 'journaling' and silly little fancy notebooks! Write--write freely whether in cursive as I do, or printing--but write and practice. You'll find, as I did decades ago, that 'stream of consciousness' writing will come to you, whether with your pen or your computer. The important part is the doing. Some days I'll actually go back 30 or 40 years and look at what I was thinking and what I was remembering. In this day of silly 'smart' phones and e-mail, what legacy will we be leaving to our families and descendants? In my family we treasure letters written by long-dead relatives from the 19th and 20th centuries, just like old photographs--which our digital cameras will lose...

Love this! The most important thing is the writing. I would differ from you in that a sturdy notebook will ensure they survive. My spiral notebooks were lost and some weee water-damaged, but once I’ve switched to nicer bindings they have all stayed together. Love your comment and perspective. I hope you visit again.

@@HemingwayJones Question for you: do you use those typewriters on your shelves or are they decoration? I satisfy my itchy typing fingers most of the time these days with a Logitech mech keyboard on my desktop that's as fast typing as any of my office electronic machines.
