Steve Perry is indeed very intelligent and savvy because I heard somewhere that he negotiated with the band before he left that he owns the rights to a heafty percent of anything journey does. Merchandise, concerts, any types of ads using his image etc and probably more things than I can think of here. I believe if someone uses his songs or the songs the band sang/sings etc.

Steve’s response at 6:06 to the interviewer may have been correct at the time but, that definitely changed over time. Most people remember Steve Perry more than the other band mates. He will always be the voice of Journey.

For anybody that plays guitar, Neil Schon is a super star, not just Perry. And, many people remember him from Santana, so...
@wordragon

@@magic5596 -First, let me say I love Steve Perry. His nuanced approach to power and soul is unrivaled in his time. But, Schon is not just one of your friends, lol. But, let's indulge your comment about not contributing for a minute. Take Mother, Father, just a great song out of many on Escape. Schon took a piece his Dad, a classical composer, reworked and arranged his composition, it was the other musicians who had some contributions based on their specific instrument, but the underlying structure was created by Schon through his father's original work. The notion that guitarists don't influence composition and the style of a band is pretty ridiculous and just plain wrong. There is enough evidence of that. Schon brings many things to Journey but one of the most important aspects of their sound he brings is dynamics compositionally, while Cain brings elegance. Lastly, why the fuck doesn't Steve Perry's solo stuff sound anything like Journey? Even when he went solo in his prime that stuff doesn't sound like Journey outside of his voice. None of the dynamic composition is there that Schon was responsible for, none of the elegance that Cain brought. But, you can hear all of that in the work with Steve Augieri, including melody that sounds Perry-esque. I am not sure you understand how much of the sound of Journey is Schon. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abtoZ71-q7Kndmw.html or kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frNmetl7zLqnnZ8.html

@@magic5596 Most of the songs Steve Perry wrote were about his life experiences, he said so in various interviews he's done. That's why he put so much emphasis and emotion in his songs due to this fact. Which is why his vocal/singing style is so great. This why no one else can sing the songs with that same emotion and present the songs the way he does, whether on studio recordings or live in concert. He was singing from his heart. Steve Perry always gave 100% plus of himself all of the time. You can't copy PERFECTION!

@@magic5596 I provided evidence, you provided opinion. And, Popular music tastes had already changed, which is why Steve Perry didn't have a hit on the last albums they did with Journey. Even your own opinions are bullshit and full of holes. Go argue your opinion somewhere else. Specifically, go to a Van Halen or Black Sabbath video and claim that Eddie Van Halen or Toni Iommi don't matter, lol.

It's funny that Steve Perry, in this interview said that when the first started Journey or when ALL five of them became "THE JOURNEY BAND", the critics were harsh saying they had no direction, no cohesiveness with their music, that they're all just making noise. Well, I am shocked that no one talked about the fact that once they were ALL in the band and learned each other's strengths, they started to EVOLVE with their music, singing, playing each instrument that it all seemed to fall into place for them. I think that's why they became one of THE BEST ROCK n ROLL BAND'S, of all time. If you watch some of the earlier video's and watch Neal Schon play his guitar, then you'll see in later video's like, Faithfully, they had EVOLVED musically, instrumentality, vocals etc. That's when they became the true band called, "JOURNEY ". I rest my case. I'll be there at 90 year's old, good Lord willing still listening to, " THE VOICE". c/o 1984!!! To them and their Legacy, I'll always be their #1 fan!!! " FAITHFULLY ".♊❤💋🤟

I was at the concert of all concerts. 1983, ORANGE ARENA- Orlando, FL. Bryan Adams, AEROSMITH, Sammy Hagar & JOURNEY. Bryan Adams- great band, great songs, great singer. AEROSMITH- poor, due to no Brad & Joe, Steven did not remember the words to Dream On. Sammy Hagar- well, Sammy Hagar. JOURNEY- had it all, they sounded just like their records on 10+. Each member had a time onstage alone. Each member took control and never let up. Steve Perry is one of a kind.

The Best: Drummer Ever
@scottvelardo700
@scottvelardo700 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Much can be said for Perry’s voice, for the songwriting chemistry between Perry, Schon and Cain. But the character that Ross Valory’s bass playing and Steve Smith’s drumming provides is absolutely integral to the sound of the band. Few drummers could have supported Perry and Schon on a level equal to them. Aynsley Dunbar was a great and exciting player, but when the band went more “crooner”-oriented, he didn’t adapt as well, and didn’t really want to. They hit the jackpot with the two Steves. Cain wrote or co-wrote some great songs, without which the band would have had fewer hits, but I miss Rolie’s voice and keyboard playing. His time feel (and chops/vocabulary) is better than Cain’s.

@drums333 I have NEVER listened to a band for the drummer, I really can't tell the difference. A drummer would have to be terrible for it to make a difference to me. The lead singer is always the most important part of a band to me. Don't get me wrong, I love instruments but, I love having a voice to go along with the instruments. Without Perry I am not listening to no drummer.

3:02 as I understand, neither Gregg Rolie nor Neal Schon wanted Steve Perry in the band as they felt he was a crooner and not a screamer like they wanted, like Robert Fleischman was. However it was former manager Herbie Herbert who brought Steve to the band. After the success of the Infinity album, and with a few hit singles, it became evident to everyone that Steve Perry was Journeys meal ticket, and as such is why Aynsley Dunbar was sacked in the fall of 1978, and once Steve Perry Gaines full control of the band, ultimately founding member/bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were also canned during the Raised On Radio recording sessions.

the first journey album i heard was "next" then came infinity; and soon became my favorite band until i heard "open arms"....yet stuck with them through raised on radio as a supportive fan; but can't follow them anymore. even had a cd of "trial by fire" that i gave to my nephew.

I thought that Carlos sang on the Spanish language Santana songs?
@graxjpg
@graxjpg 6 жыл бұрын
For Gregg to say he did all the vocals is a bit insincere. Both Michaels, Santana and Gregg all sung in the original Santana band. Obviously the music wasn't vocally centered and vocal harmonies weren't leaned upon
