Here is what made JSS the perfect fit. Vocal ability, he wasnt trying to be or sound like Perry, he had tone, a stage presence but not over doing it. And he made the songs his own which sounded fresh and very, very good.

Arnel has lots of version that fits his voice better, more listenable. Only this one and send her my love is JSS good version.
I’ve come back and listened to this performance several times over the last couple of years and I like it more and more. Scratching my head, why in the world did Journey not retain JSS’s services. What a refreshing take on this song! What a great singer!

Jeff was THE BEST THING to happen to Journey in many years. They ducked up when the let him go. He has one of the best voices in rock -- ever. I hung out with him for a couple years in Colorado and during the time he got the gig with Yngwie. Then he of course moved away and toured. Nicest guy, fantastic voice. So lucky to know him. Cannot wait for new album and American tour by his new band Sons of Apollo!!!!!!!

Wow, I just discovered today that JSS had done a stint in Journey. He sounds fuckin great. He really is one of my top metal/ rock vocalist and I am really impressed and a little surprised by how well his voice fits in this "adult contemporary" style ballad. I know he still has a bunch of years left but I think it's a shame he didn't achieve more fame and recognition. It's just one of those things I guess sometimes the cards we're dealt in life aren't the best. But as as JSS goes, in interviews he seems happy and content in life. If it were me I probably would have gotten all tucked up, bitter and jaded, developed substance abuse problems and fucked my life all up...oh wait a second..i did do that😢. Anyway, rock on Mr Soto and thanks for being such an inspiration for the rest of us out there who need inspiring.

I never saw Journey with Perry. I haven't seen them with Pineda. But I saw them 4 times with Augeri and twice with Soto. The second time with Soto was the best Journey concert I've been to. He wasn't trying to sound like Perry and Jonathan Cain didn't like that.
@HighPower7623 жыл бұрын
I was very lucky, my 1st concert ever was in 1978 right after Steve Perry joined the band and it was awesome!🤘 I saw them on every tour until after Raised On Radio, when Steve Perry took a hiatus. I never saw them live again after the way the did Steve Perry so dirty on the reunion tour in 96'. But I did like a lot of the music they did with Steve Augeri. I thought he was the closest one to recreate the Steve Perry sound, without looking like he was trying too hard. In the VH1 Behind The Music video he was referred to as "Steve Perry with a perm" which I thought was a remarkably accurate characterization. Honestly comer I had no idea until I saw this video, that there was another singer wedged between Steve Augeri and Armin Pineda. Hes obviously got a slightly different vocal style from all of the other singers, but I really like him. And I agree with your assessment that they probably should have stuck within. Maybe then I would actually have known who the guy was until 20 minutes ago!🤪 The only reason I'm even here is I saw him in a band called the Ssmons of Apollo doing a crazy awesome rendition of an old Rainbow song,"Gates Of Babylon."
@MichaelCharles20113 жыл бұрын
HighPower762 yeah. They did Augeri dirty because they ran his voice into the ground and just dumped him. Then they dumped Soto after the tour just the same. Love the music, but that band is filled with opportunistic pricks.

True JSS did not want to impersonate Steve Perry. He loves him and looks up to him. That is why Journey dumped him. They wanted a complete mimic..JSS sings in lower octaves and is dramatic in a good way.They might have actually been able to sell some NEW material with him because unlike Arnel and Augeri...he is a true and creative mucician and artist ... and not a karaoke mimic....kind of like the way Sammy Hagar came into Van Halen without disrespecting what had already been DONE by David Lee Roth...yes in concerts he did some of the old favorites (in his own voice and style) but did not re-record Roth's hits or recycle nothing but Roth's hits with the band....he created A LOT of credible selling music of his own with them.....Hagar and Roth were actually able to go on a tour together without Van Halen after they were both out with no hard feelings....and nobody did this comparison b#llsh*t with the 2 of them because they both are unique solid artists who stand on their own. With all the bad blood back then between Roth and Van Halen brothers....they did not sell out the PERSONA of their band brother, like Schon, Caine and Valory did...tackiest move in music history and they have lost respect of their peers in the music industry over it....Journey chose the easy route straight for the Asian market. But I agree with you. I don't want to hear these songs out of anybody's face but Perry's....

I have loved Steve Perry and Journey since first seeing them in a live concert on television back in the 70s when Steve had just joined. Not sure if it was on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert or the Midnight Special or maybe even PBS. Been a minute. Loved them ever since and at one point owned everything Journey had ever released, even back to their pre-Steve Perry prog-rock days when Gregg Rollie was their keyboardist and lead singer as well. But when Steve Perry left the fold for good I struggled with the idea of a Steve Perry-less Journey. Most long-time fans have struggled with the uncertainty, not just me. Was not Steve Augeri's biggest fan although I liked the non-Steve Perry-penned songs he sang. But he was not Steve. Really, who else could be. I begrudgingly gave Arnel a fair listen on their live from Manila video. He did a pretty spot-on Steve Perry albeit with a slight accent. I had heard rumors that Jeff Scott Soto had stepped into Steve Perry's shoes. Loved Jeff when he sang with Yngwie Malmsteen. Had not heard him with Journey. Jeff has a great voice and I love how he sings this song, but it was immediately apparent they had to bring the song down a few steps into JSS's far more baritone vocal range than the high tenor range favored by Steve Perry. This is a great version of the song. Love Jeff's vocals and great stage presence but Journey songs are known for vocally heading into the upper stratosphere register-wise and this? Definitely did not go there. At least Arnel gets up into Perry's upper tenor registers. Jeff might have been a good fit as far as stage presence but he would continue to alter the classic Journey sound, just because his voice is noticeably deeper than Steve Perry's. That would be both good and less awesome. JSS does not try to sound like Steve Perry. Kudos for that. Can't be Steve so just had to be himself. But bringing Jeff aboard permanently would require alternate tuning on every Journey song and it would be a little weird never hearing another soaring falsetto Journey song ever again. Just my two cents.

Jeff is a crazy amazing singer and has a fatter sound than Perry but he's still great and maybe it was a little hard for him due to the high ranges but he still did a good job. Neil prob was so used to Steve's voice coming out of those monitors that he just had to have Steve 2.0. Arnel is good but a little too forceful, imo. Soto actually has a deeper range than Perry so he has to push harder to get those really high notes but what he did with Malmsteen was amazing.

I'm absolutely convinced without a doubt that Neal Schon's ego was the main reason for letting go the Best Singer and Performer Jeff Scott Soto..specially when we all know Steve Perry and Neal had clashes about who was in charge of the Band. Jeff was too much of a good thing.. a seasoned veteran in the Music industry who could have contributed with new Journey music..but Neal's Ego got on the way
@jjsoto448 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, from what I heard in an interview with Jeff years ago, they didn't get along because Jeff was going into his forties with a party attitude, and all the older guys in Journey wanted to soak their feet and go to bed early after a show because sixty was around the corner. I'm joking. Different people. Different times. And yes, I'm a Puerto Rican Soto, from Brooklyn, who is a cousin of his, but I barely know him other than a few emails and a quick phone call with him when his dad "Red" called my mother from backstage at a concert in Orlando decades ago. Jeff's mom spirited him away from the Soto enclave in Brooklyn and ran far away from that side of the family (I met his dad, his/my cousins, et al, but never had any connection from that branch of the family even though we live in the same gigantic town called "Brooklyn"; though I brag about Jeff just because we share genetic material...who wouldn't?). I was thrilled when Jeff was chosen to be in Journey, and when the "firing" happened, I knew, just knew it had to be Jeff's doing (men in our family shoot themselves in the foot for the love of it); not that Jeff doesn't have a freaking amazing life. He has it made. Lucky, lucky man. Very talented, and Journey made a mistake when they fired him. Pineda is great too, and absolutely their pet. Which if I were in his shoes, I'd probably be the same...the money's big, right? Oh well.
@IDR20057 жыл бұрын
I like your outlook Mr. Soto. It's got to be difficult to be in a position like your cousin. I mean, everything that comes with fame and how one has to deal with it.For whatever its worth, out of everyone Journey tried out, I believe they should have stuck with Jeff or at least gave it a little more time. Primarily because he didn't sound like SP, didn't try to sound like SP, but still had a good hook with his approach. And he could have taken them in a different direction with potentially more hits.Trust me brother, I grew up with Journey since the Infinity album. I'm a HUGE SP fan. But your cousin took the best position not trying to sound like SP and I loved it. Arnel is the best karaoke of SP and a lot of others. Sting, Peter Cetera, etc. But I don't believe he has any original hits of his own?

Jeff was straining his voice a bit with some of those notes. I didn't really know him when he was in Brooklyn as a young boy, but as a kid of about 14, I'd heard his demo (which floated around a Puerto Rican family that didn't like metal) and he had such a great voice at the tender age of 16. All he did was sing and develop his gift. That's the way to do it. With Journey, it was a HUGE opportunity. I don't know the facts, I just know the speculation some family members say is the truth--Journey and Jeff just didn't get along--butting heads creatively and otherwise (they were all grandpas in Journey, and Jeff was still partying and having a good time). I think he kicks himself a bit for losing that opportunity, but Jeff is still travelling the world at fifty (plus), and he's having the time of his life. He's the most famous member of my family, though some say we're also related to Talisa Soto (model, actress whose real name is Miriam). Jeff is big into family reunions, and when he's in the City, he gathers cousins and his half-siblings (I begged off of these reunions because I don't get along with that branch of my family). His mom took him from Brooklyn because the Soto men (his father's nickname was "Red"), are well, um, prolific at chasing women--and the permutations that come from that. Jeff is a lucky dude. I hope one day to have him meet my kids and wife; and have our own reunion. Eventually I want to reconnect with certain family members; Jeff is near the top of that list.

JJ Soto thanks for sharing your family stories. Three big name Flamenco singers from Jerez Spain are Sotos (Jose Merce, Manuel Soto “Sordera”, and Vicente Soto). Jeff is one of the scariest singers of all time. I have to laugh when I see journey fans compare him to Perry or any other singer from journey honestly. He is a total pro the way he pulls off this gig. None of the other singers could pull off I’ll see the light tonight etc, the guy is ridiculous. He covered graham Bonet and mark boals w Yngwie, I mean I try to imagine steve Perry and Yngwie hahaha!

In my opinion Jeff Scott Soto was the best replacement that Journey could have. He sings the songs in his own style and not trying to copy Steve Perry.

Couldn't agree more! He sounded great. Journey have become dysfunctional and stuck on the ghost of Steve Perry!

@@jeffelijahelias785 Journey released some live footage in Japan not too long ago and I thought Arnel sounded great! But on the R&R Hall of Fame, he was terrible! Thinking maybe Journey burns out all their singer. Steve Augeri - same thing!

I forgot about JSS WAS with Journey. What a wonderful voice. I think his style real fit that smokey sound that Perry had Journey doing on liven on radio tour in 85 and 86. Wish it could of worked out for him. He could couldn't be the little rabbit on stage like Perry or Arnel.. he was a much larger man. But moved very well in his own way. He surely nailed this song right on the beat.
